1. Forces and Interactions |
A force is simply a push or a pull. Forces can make objects start moving, stop, speed up, slow down or change shape. Some forces need contact, while others can act at a distance.
Force – a push or pull measured in newtons (N).

Contact force – a force that acts only when two objects are touching, such as friction or tension.
Think ‘contact = touching’. Rub your hands together to feel friction – that’s a contact force.
Non-contact force – a force that acts without touch, like gravity, magnetic force and electrostatic force.
Picture a magnet pulling a paperclip without touching it – the force reaches across empty space.

Speed – how fast an object is moving; the distance travelled in a certain time. Average speed is calculated by dividing total distance by total time.
The formula is: speed = distance ÷ time. Think of the three letters s, d, t – ‘silly dogs trot’ can help you recall speed = distance/time.
Distance–time graph – a graph with time on the horizontal axis and distance on the vertical axis. The slope (gradient) tells you the speed.
If the line is horizontal, the object is stationary. A steeper line means faster speed. Remember: ‘steep slope = speedy’.
Stationary – not moving; the distance stays the same over time.
Think of a parked car – the distance graph is flat.
Constant speed – moving at a steady rate without speeding up or slowing down. On a distance–time graph, it shows a straight sloping line.
Like cruise control on a motorway, covering the same metres each second.
Acceleration – any change in speed over time. Even slowing down (deceleration) is a type of acceleration.
When a bus pulls away from a stop, it accelerates; when it brakes, it accelerates negatively. Picture the speedometer needle moving.
3. Energy Stores and Transfers |
Energy is the ability to do work. It comes in different stored forms and can be shifted or changed, but it is never created or destroyed—that’s the principle of conservation of energy.
Energy – measured in joules (J), it makes things happen: moving, heating, lighting.

Kinetic energy – the energy an object has because of its motion. Anything moving, from a rolling ball to a flying bird, stores kinetic energy.
Memory tip: ‘Kinetic = kicks’ – if it’s kicking along, it’s got kinetic energy.
Gravitational potential energy – energy stored in an object because of its height above the ground. The higher up, the greater this store.

4. Heat and Thermal Processes |
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler one. Temperature measures how hot something is, not how much energy it contains. Understanding conduction, convection and radiation helps you explain everyday warming and cooling.
