Year 7 history under the WJEC specification provides students with an essential foundation in understanding the medieval world, from the momentous events of 1066 to the profound transformations of the 14th century. This article reviews the core knowledge that every student should master, covering key events, people, concepts, and historical skills that underpin the first year of secondary history in Wales.

1. Understanding Chronology: From Romans to Normans |

In Year 7, you learn that chronology—putting events in the correct time order—is the backbone of history. Before diving into the Norman Conquest, it is helpful to see the big picture. The last Roman soldiers left Britain around 410 AD. After that, tribes from northern Germany, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, settled and formed several kingdoms, such as Wessex and Mercia. By the 9th century, Viking raiders from Scandinavia attacked and even settled in the Danelaw. In 1016 Cnut, a Viking king, ruled all England. When Edward the Confessor died childless in January 1066, a crisis over the throne triggered one of the most famous years in British history.

2. The Norman Conquest, 1066 |

When Edward the Confessor died, three men claimed the English crown: Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, who was crowned king the next day; William, Duke of Normandy, who said Edward had promised him the throne; and Harald Hardrada, the Viking king of Norway. Harold Godwinson first marched north and defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September. Immediately afterwards, he had to rush south to face William’s invasion at Hastings. On 14 October 1066, the Battle of Hastings took place. Harold’s army, weary from the march, fought bravely on Senlac Hill but was eventually defeated. Harold was killed—tradition says by an arrow to the eye—and William became king of England, later known as William the Conqueror. The Bayeux Tapestry, a 70-metre-long embroidered cloth, tells the story of the Norman Conquest from the Norman viewpoint and is a vital primary source.

3. The Feudal System |

To control his new kingdom, William introduced the feudal system. The basic idea was that all land belonged to the king. He granted large estates to his most trusted followers, the tenants-in-chief (barons and bishops). In return, they swore an oath of loyalty, paid taxes, and provided knights for the royal army. The barons then gave land to knights, who promised military service. At the bottom of the pyramid were the peasants, including villeins who were tied to the land and had to work for the lord in exchange for small strips of land to farm for themselves. In 1086, William ordered the Domesday Survey, a massive record of who owned what land and what it was worth. This helped him raise taxes efficiently and showed his power over all England.

4. Castles: Motte-and-Bailey to Stone Keeps |

The Normans built castles across England and Wales to secure their conquest. The first type was the motte-and-bailey castle, made of wood and earth. A large mound (motte) was topped with a wooden tower, and a lower enclosed area (bailey) housed soldiers, stables and workshops, surrounded by a ditch and palisade. These could be constructed quickly—often in just a few weeks. Over time, many were rebuilt in stone, creating powerful stone keep castles like the White Tower at the Tower of London or Chepstow Castle in Wales. Stone keeps had thick walls, narrow arrow loops and were much stronger against attacks. Concentric castles with multiple layers of defence, such as Beaumaris Castle, appeared later.

5. Life in a Medieval Village |

In the medieval period, about nine out of ten people lived in the countryside and worked on the land. Most villages were organised around a manor owned by a lord. Peasants, including villeins, worked long hours on the lord’s demesne (home farm) as well as their own strips. They used the three-field system: one field planted with wheat or rye, one with peas or barley, and one left fallow to recover. Their homes were simple cruck houses made of wattle and daub, with that
