1. What is Sociology? |

Sociology is the systematic study of society, social groups, and the patterns of human interaction. Unlike common sense, it relies on evidence gathered through research. Sociologists examine both small-scale face-to-face interactions (micro-level) and large-scale social structures like governments and the economy (macro-level).

By studying sociology, you learn to question why things are the way they are, rather than simply accepting them. For example, why do some children succeed at school while others struggle? Sociologists look for explanations beyond individual ability.

A key skill in sociology is being able to see the links between our personal experiences and wider social forces. This is called the ‘sociological imagination’, a term we will explore later.

2. Key Concepts: Norms and Values |

Norms are the expected rules of behaviour in a society. They can be formal, like laws that say you must not steal, or informal, like saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Values are the deeply held standards that a culture considers important, such as privacy, respect for elders, or individual freedom.

Norms and values vary across different cultures and over time. For instance, attitudes towards marriage and family size have changed significantly in the UK. What is considered normal in one place might be unacceptable in another.

Sociologists argue that shared norms and values help hold society together, because they create order and predictability. However, they can also lead to conflict when groups have different value systems.
