Case Studies in Action: Practical Exercises for Year 8 Sociology |

📚 Case Studies in Action: Practical Exercises for Year 8 Sociology |

Sociology helps us understand the hidden rules of everyday life. In this article, we will use real-life case studies to practise how sociologists think. Each case study presents a situation you might encounter at home, school, or online, and then we will analyse it using key sociological ideas such as norms, roles, socialisation, and inequality. By working through these practical exercises, you will build confidence in applying sociological knowledge to the world around you.

1. What is a Case Study in Sociology? |

A case study is a detailed look at a specific person, group, event, or situation. Sociologists use case studies to explore how social structures affect individuals. In Year 8, you will learn to identify patterns of behaviour and connect them to wider society. A good case study describes what happened, asks ‘why’ and ‘how’, and links it to concepts like culture, power, or identity.

For example, you might study a group of friends who all dye their hair the same colour. You would ask: Why do they conform? What norm is at work? What happens if someone does not follow? These questions turn a simple story into a sociological investigation.

2. Case Study 1: Friendship Groups and Peer Pressure |

Read the following case: ‘At Oakwood School, the popular group, called the ‘Wolves’, expects all members to wear branded trainers and ignore anyone who wears unbranded shoes. Lucy, a new member, feels she must buy expensive trainers to fit in. When another friend, Alex, wears old trainers, the group teases him and excludes him from lunch.’

Now consider these questions: What social rule is being enforced? How does Lucy experience socialisation into this group? What sanctions are used against Alex?

3. Analysing Peer Pressure with Key Concepts |

The ‘Wolves’ group has created an informal norm: only branded trainers are acceptable. Norms are unwritten rules that guide behaviour in a group or society. Because the norm is not written in any rulebook but is still powerful, it is an example of informal social control.

Lucy is experiencing secondary socialisation. Socialisation is the lifelong process of learning the norms and values of a group. She learns that to belong, she must follow the dress code. This is peer socialisation, where friends teach each other what is expected.

The teasing and exclusion faced by Alex are negative sanctions. A sanction is any reaction to behaviour that encourages or discourages it. Negative sanctions, like being laughed at or isolated, punish those who break the norm. This reinforces the group’s power.

This case also shows social stratification on a small scale. The group members rank themselves higher, and they assign lower status to Alex because of his shoes. This mirrors how society often ranks people by wealth or appearance.

4. Case Study 2: Family Diversity |

Case: ‘Jamie lives with his mother, stepfather, and two stepsisters. He visits his biological father every other weekend. His best friend, Chloe, lives with her two fathers, who adopted her as a baby. Another classmate, Aoife, lives with her grandparents because her parents work abroad.’

Use this case to explore the concept of family diversity. Ask yourself: Are all families the same? What different types of family are represented? How do these families perform the functions of a family?

5. Understanding Family Roles and Norms |

Sociologists recognise many family forms, not just the nuclear family (two parents and children). Jamie’s family is a reconstituted or blended family, formed when one parent remarries. Chloe’s family is a same-sex parent family, and Aoife’s arrangement is an extended family or skip-generation household.

Despite differences, all these families can fulfil key functions: emotional support, economic provision, and socialisation of children. For example, Jamie’s stepfather may take on a caring role, teaching him norms about sharing. Chloe’s fathers provide love and stability, showing that gender roles are not fixed.

Family roles are the expected behaviours associated with positions like ‘mother’, ‘father’, or ‘child’. In diverse families, these roles may be shared differently. Chloe’s fathers may both do housework and career work, challenging traditional gender scripts. This helps us question the idea that there is one ‘normal’ family.

From this case, we learn that family is defined more by relationships and care than by a fixed structure. Sociologists value diversity because it reflects real life.

6. Case Study 3: School Rules and Social Control |

Case: ‘Elmwood Academy has a strict uniform policy: blazer, tie, and polished black shoes. A new student, Tom, repeatedly wears a non-uniform hoodie and trainers. He is first given a warning, then a detention. Eventually, the school places him on a behaviour report. Tom says the rules stifle his identity. Teachers argue the rules promote discipline and a sense of community.’

Analyse this case by looking at formal social control, the hidden curriculum, and the debate between conformity and individuality.

7. Applying Theories of Deviance |

The school uniform rule is an example of formal social control. Formal control is based on written rules and official sanctions. The warnings, detentions, and behaviour report are formal sanctions applied by an authority (the school).

Sociologists would also note the hidden curriculum. This refers to the informal lessons taught in school, such as obedience, punctuality, and acceptance of hierarchy. By enforcing uniform, the school teaches the value of following rules, which prepares students for the workplace.

Tom’s behaviour can be labelled as deviance. Deviance is any act that breaks the norms of a group. Labelling theory suggests that when a person is labelled as ‘troublemaker’, they may embrace that identity. Thus, repeated punishments could make Tom more rebellious rather than compliant.

This case also highlights a tension between individual identity and collective identity. Tom values self-expression, while the school values group identity. This is a classic sociological dilemma: how much should the group impose on the individual?

8. Case Study 4: Online Communities and Identity |

Case: ‘Ava is a member of an online fandom for a K-pop group. In this community, she uses a pseudonym and creates fan art. Members support each other and have their own slang. Her offline friends do not share this interest, and sometimes she feels like she is living a double life. She wonders which identity is the ‘real’ her.’

Use this case to discuss virtual communities, impression management, and hybrid identity.

9. Exploring Identity in a Digital World | 探索数字世界中的身份认同

An online fandom is a virtual community, a group of people who interact primarily through the internet and share a common interest. Like any community, it has its own norms (supporting members), values (creativity), and even a unique language
