1. The Communication Formula |

All media begin with a simple but powerful process: communication. The basic model describes how a message travels from a producer to an audience. Understanding this flow is the first step in analysing any media text.

Sender → Message → Encoding → Channel → Decoding → Receiver → Feedback

The sender (e.g. a filmmaker) creates a message. This message is encoded using media language – camera, sound, editing – and sent through a channel (cinema, TV, YouTube). The receiver (audience) decodes or interprets the message based on their own experience and context. Feedback (comments, ratings, shares) completes the loop. Every media product you study follows this path.

2. The Semiotic Triangle |

Media texts are built from signs. The semiotic triangle helps us see how a sign creates meaning. It is one of the most fundamental tools in media analysis, introduced by the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and later expanded by Charles Sanders Peirce.

Sign (Symbol) = Signifier (Form) + Signified (Concept) + Referent (Real Object)

The signifier is the physical form we see or hear – a word, an image, a sound. The signified is the mental concept it triggers. For example, a red heart emoji ❤ is a signifier; the signified might be love, affection or ‘like’. The referent is the actual object in the real world, but in media we often deal with signs where the referent is an idea rather than a tangible thing. This triangular relationship explains why different audiences can interpret the same sign differently.

3. The Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Why do we watch TV, scroll social media or play video games? The uses and gratifications theory offers a ‘formula’ for audience motivation. Instead of asking ‘what media do to people’, it asks ‘what people do with media’.

Media Use = Information + Personal Identity + Integration & Social Interaction + Entertainment

Audience members actively select media to fulfil four needs: Information (learning, seeking advice), Personal Identity (reinforcing values, finding role models), Integration and Social Interaction (feeling connected, talking about shows), and Entertainment (escapism, relaxation, enjoyment). A Year 7 student might watch a gaming tutorial for information, follow a favourite YouTuber to shape their identity, discuss a series with friends for social interaction, and binge a comedy for entertainment. Every media choice can be explained by this addition of needs.

4. The Narrative Structure Formula |

Stories in media – whether a film, a news report or a game – follow recognisable patterns. The narrative structure formula helps you map out the journey from start to finish.

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

This is Todorov’s model. A state of balance (equilibrium) is disturbed by an event (disruption). Characters recognise the problem and try to fix it (attempt to repair), leading to a new or restored balance. A superhero movie starts in a peaceful city, a villain appears, the hero rises, battles ensue, and finally the city is safe again – but often changed. This formula works across genres and helps you predict and analyse narrative arcs.

5. The Genre Formula |

Genre is essential for understanding films, TV shows, music and games. At first glance, genre seems fixed, but the industry keeps it fresh with a clever formula of repetition and variation.

Genre = Repetition (Familiar Codes) × Variation (New Twists) = Audience Pleasure

Repetition gives audiences the comfort of familiar characters, settings, iconography and themes (think of the dark alleys in crime dramas or the jump-scares in horror). Variation adds something unexpected – a new character type, a flipped convention – to keep the genre alive and generate excitement. When you analyse a media text, identify which generic codes are repeated and where the text innovates. The balance between the two is what keeps fans coming back.

6. The Media Language Formula |

Every media text speaks its own language, built from denotation and connotation. This simple two-layer formula unlocks deep layers of meaning in adverts, photographs, music videos and beyond.

Meaning = Denotation (What You See) + Connotation (What It Suggests)

Denotation is the literal, obvious description: a photograph of a puppy in a car. Connotation is the associated meaning: innocence, companionship, a happy journey. In media analysis, start with denotation – list what is in the frame, the colours, the words – then move to connotation by asking what ideas, emotions or values are being linked to those elements. Advertisers constantly use this formula to attach positive feelings to their products.

7. The Representation Formula |

Media does not simply reflect reality; it constructs it. The representation formula reminds us that every image, story or portrait is the result of careful choices made by a media producer.

Representation = Selection (What to Include) + Construction (How It Is Shown) + Intention (Why It Matters)

When a TV news report shows a protest, the camera selects specific shots: a calm speaker or a shouting individual. The editing constructs the sequence – perhaps starting with a dramatic clash. The intention might be to inform, to sensationalise or to support a particular viewpoint. To analyse representation, ask: Who or what is being represented? What has been selected and what has been left out? How do camera, sound and editing construct this image? What is the message about this person, place or issue?

8. The Audience Targeting Formula |

Media texts are carefully aimed at specific groups. Producers use audience targeting to ensure their content reaches the right people and makes commercial or social impact.

Target Audience = Demographics (Age, Gender, Income) + Psychographics (Attitudes, Interests, Lifestyle)

Demographics are measurable categories: 12–15-year-olds, females, urban families. Psychographics dig deeper into personality, values and hobbies – such as ‘adventurous explorers’ or ‘status-driven achievers’. A gaming app might target demographics of 10–14-year-old boys and psychographics of competitive gamers who enjoy challenges. When you study a media product, describe its likely audience using both layers. This formula is used in everything from podcast creation to blockbuster marketing.

9. The Production Elements Formula |

Film and television are built from moving images and sound. The production elements formula groups the technical tools that shape meaning and mood on screen.

Textual Analysis = Camera (Framing, Angle, Movement) + Sound (Diegetic, Non-diegetic) + Editing (Pace, Transitions) + Mise-en-Scène (Setting, Lighting, Props, Costume)

Camera choices communicate power and emotion: a low-angle shot suggests dominance, a close-up reveals feeling. Sound layers build atmosphere – diegetic sound belongs to the story world (footsteps, dialogue), while non-diegetic sound (background music, voice-over) guides our interpretation. Editing controls rhythm and time, and mise-en-scène (everything placed in front of the camera) creates the visual world. Combine these to analyse any scene.

10. The Media Effects Tally |

While media effects are debated, some effects can be thought of as a tally that accumulates over time. This simple formula helps you remember key audience effects theories without oversimplifying.

Potential Effect = Exposure × Repetition × Personal Identification × Context

If a media message is seen once, its effect may be small. But repeated exposure, combined with strong personal identification with a character or situation, and a supportive context (e.g. a peer group sharing the same views), can amplify the influence. For instance, a repeated stereotype might reinforce a harmful belief. However, audiences are not passive; they filter content through their own knowledge. This formula helps you discuss effects while still acknowledging active audience interpretation.

11. The Digital Engagement Equation |

In the age of social media, engagement is key. Content creators and platforms rely on a simple equation to measure and boost how audiences interact with media.

Digital Engagement = Likes + Shares + Comments + Saves ÷ Reach × 100%

Every like, share, comment and save signals that the audience is not just consuming but actively responding. A high engagement rate means the content resonates. For Year 7 students, this formula explains why influencers ask you to ‘like and subscribe’ – they are trying to increase the numerator. When analysing online media, look at how design choices (thumbnails, captions, calls to action) are engineered to trigger these engagements. This is a vital part of modern media literacy.

12. The Critical Thinking Check |

Media studies is not just about memorising terms; it is about thinking critically. Use this final formula whenever you encounter a media text, to ensure your analysis is deep, balanced and evidence-based.

Strong Analysis = Description (What?) + Explanation (How?) + Interpretation (Why?) + Evaluation (So What?)

Begin by describing what you see and hear (denotation). Explain how technical elements create meaning (connotation). Interpret why the producer made those choices (intention and context). Finally, evaluate the impact: Does it work? Is it fair? Does it challenge or reinforce stereotypes? This four-step check transforms a simple observation into a high-quality media studies response. Keep it visible as you revise, and you will always have a clear structure for any exam question.
