1. What is Sociology? |

Sociology is the systematic study of society, social relationships, and human behaviour in groups. It looks at how people interact, how societies are organised, and how culture shapes our lives. Instead of just observing individuals, sociologists focus on patterns, structures, and social forces that influence everyone.

2. Society and Culture |

Society refers to a group of people who share a common territory, interact with one another, and share a culture. Culture is the whole way of life of a particular society – it includes language, beliefs, values, norms, customs, food, clothing, and all the material objects people create. Every society has its own unique culture, and sociologists examine how culture is passed on and how it changes over time.

  • Material culture: Physical objects like buildings, art, technology.

  • Non‑material culture: Ideas, beliefs, values, language.

3. Norms and Values |

Norms are the unwritten rules of behaviour that society expects members to follow in particular situations. For example, queuing in a shop or saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Values are the shared principles and standards that a society considers important, such as honesty, respect, or success. Values provide the broad guidelines, while norms are the specific rules that reflect those values.

Politeness 礼貌 Saying ‘thank you’ 说“谢谢”

4. Socialisation | 社会化

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the culture of their society – its norms, values, language, and expected behaviours. It shapes our identity and teaches us how to fit into social groups. Without socialisation, a person would not be able to function fully as a member of society.

There are two main types of socialisation: primary socialisation, which takes place in early childhood, usually within the family, and secondary socialisation, which occurs later through schools, peer groups, the media, and the workplace.

5. Agencies of Socialisation |

Agencies of socialisation are the individuals, groups, and institutions that teach us the norms and values of society. The main agencies include the family, the education system, the peer group, the mass media, religion, and the workplace. Each agency has a different role and influences us at different stages of life.

  • Family – transmits basic values, love, and social rules.

  • Education – teaches knowledge, discipline, and citizenship.

  • Peers – friends and classmates who influence attitudes and behaviour.

  • Media – television, social media, and the internet shape opinions and trends.

6. Primary Socialisation: Family |

Primary socialisation happens in the first years of life, mainly through the family. Parents, carers, and siblings teach a child basic skills like walking, talking, and how to behave. During this stage, children absorb the culture they are born into, including language, gender roles, and basic manners. The family is often called the most important agency of socialisation because it lays the foundation for a person’s personality and moral values.

Key vocabulary: gender role – the set of expectations about how males and females should behave; social identity – the sense of who you are based on group membership.

7. Secondary Socialisation: Education and Peers |

Secondary socialisation begins when a child enters school and starts interacting with people outside the immediate family. The education system introduces formal rules, the hidden curriculum (informal learning about punctuality, obedience, and competition), and new knowledge. Peer groups – friends of a similar age – become extremely influential, especially during adolescence. Through peers, young people learn to cooperate, negotiate, and develop an identity separate from their family.

The hidden curriculum includes things like learning to wait your turn, respecting authority, and working quietly – lessons not taught through textbooks but through daily school routines.

8. Mass Media and Socialisation |

The mass media – television, films, the internet, social media platforms, and advertising – plays a powerful role in secondary socialisation. It exposes people to a wide range of lifestyles, beliefs, and norms, often shaping what is considered ‘normal’ or desirable. Media can reinforce stereotypes, spread mainstream values, and sometimes challenge traditional ideas.

For example, the media often presents idealised body images that influence young people’s self‑esteem. Understanding media literacy – the ability to critically analyse media messages – is a key sociological skill.

9. Identity: Who Am I?

Identity is how we see ourselves and how others see us. It is a combination of personal characteristics and social memberships. Sociologists study different types of identity: individual identity (your unique traits), social identity (belonging to groups like family, nationality, or class), and cultural identity (shared culture and traditions). Identity is not fixed; it develops through socialisation and can change across a lifetime.

Terms to remember: multiple identities – the idea that one person can hold several identities at once (e.g., student, daughter, friend, athlete). Labelling – the process of attaching a definition or category to a person, which can affect how they behave.

10. Social Stratification |

Social stratification is the way society is divided into different levels, or strata, based on factors like wealth, income, status, and power. It creates a hierarchy where some groups have more resources and opportunities than others. Stratification is a structural feature of society and passes advantages or disadvantages from one generation to the next.

Sociologists identify different systems of stratification, including class systems (based mainly on economic factors) and caste systems (based on birth, fixed positions). In modern Britain, social class is the most studied form of stratification.

11. Social Class |

Social class is a group of people who share a similar economic position in society, usually measured by occupation, income, education, and wealth. Common distinctions include the upper class, middle class, working class, and sometimes the underclass. Social class influences life chances – the opportunities a person has to achieve positive outcomes in life, including health, education, and housing.

Key concept: social mobility – the movement of individuals or groups between different social classes. Mobility can be upwards (improving position) or downwards.

12. Gender and Ethnicity |

Sociologists separate the terms sex (biological differences between males and females) and gender (socially constructed roles, behaviours, and expectations attached to being male or female). Ethnicity refers to shared culture, language, history, and traditions that distinguish one group from another. Both gender and ethnicity are key dimensions of social identity and can affect a person’s life chances and experiences of inequality.

Example: gender socialisation is the process through which children learn what society expects of their gender – blue for boys, pink for girls; trucks for boys, dolls for girls. These patterns can be challenged, and sociologists explore how they change over time.
