2. Forces and Motion | 力与运动

A force is a push or a pull that can change an object’s speed, direction or shape. Forces are measured in newtons (N) and can be contact forces, such as friction and tension, or non-contact forces, such as gravity and magnetism.

Light is a transverse wave; sound is a longitudinal wave.

The eye contains a lens that focuses light onto the retina. Light is refracted, or bent, when it passes from one medium to another, such as from air to glass. This principle is used in lenses and prisms.

5. Electricity | 电学

There are two basic types of circuits: series and parallel. The table below compares their key features.

In a series circuit, all components are connected one after another. Because the current is the same everywhere, adding more bulbs increases the total resistance and makes each bulb dimmer.

In a parallel circuit, each component is connected across the same two points of the circuit. Household wiring uses parallel circuits so that appliances can be operated independently and each receives the full mains voltage.

6. Magnetism | 磁学

A magnet produces a magnetic field, which is the region around a magnet where magnetic materials experience a force. Magnetic field lines go from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet. The Earth itself behaves like a giant bar magnet, which is why a compass needle points north.
