1. Map Skills |

Maps are scaled-down representations of real places. Scale shows the relationship between map distance and ground distance, such as 1:25,000, meaning 1 cm on the map equals 25,000 cm (250 m) on the ground. Using a scale line or ratio makes it possible to measure straight and winding distances.

Four-figure and six-figure grid references pinpoint locations. Eastings (numbers along the bottom) are given first, followed by northings (numbers up the side). Six-figure references divide a grid square into tenths, allowing much more precise location finding.

Contour lines join points of equal height; the closer the lines, the steeper the slope. Spot heights and layer colouring also help you visualise the relief of the land. Being able to draw and label cross-sections from contour patterns is a key skill.

2. River Processes and Landforms |

Rivers erode their channels through hydraulic action (the force of moving water), abrasion (rocks scraping the bed and banks), attrition (rocks hitting each other and becoming smaller) and solution (slightly acidic water dissolving certain rocks). Vertical erosion deepens the channel, while lateral erosion widens it.

Sediment is transported in four ways: traction (large boulders rolled along), saltation (small stones bounced), suspension (fine silt carried within the water) and solution (dissolved minerals). When the river loses energy, deposition builds up features like floodplains and deltas.

Waterfalls form where a band of hard rock lies over softer rock. The softer rock erodes faster, creating a steep drop and a plunge pool. Meanders are winding bends; erosion on the outside of a bend forms river cliffs, while deposition on the inside builds slip-off slopes. Oxbow lakes result when a meander is cut off.

3. Coastal Processes and Landforms |

Waves are driven by wind and are the main agent of coastal erosion. Destructive waves have a strong backwash that removes beach material, while constructive waves have a stronger swash, building up beaches. Coastal erosion processes include hydraulic action, abrasion (also called corrasion), attrition and solution, just like rivers.

Cliffs and wave-cut platforms develop where waves undercut a steep slope, causing collapse. Headlands and bays form along coasts with alternating bands of hard and soft rock; the soft rock erodes more quickly, creating bays, while the hard rock remains as headlands. Caves, arches, stacks and stumps are created by focused erosion on headland weaknesses.

Beaches, spits and bars are depositional landforms. Longshore drift moves sediment along the coast in a zigzag pattern; when this sediment extends into open water, a spit forms. If a spit joins two headlands or an island to the mainland, it becomes a bar or tombolo.

4. Population and Migration |

Population density is the number of people living in a given area, usually expressed per square kilometre. Distribution refers to how people are spread out. Dense populations often cluster along coastlines and rivers where transport, trade and farming are easier. Sparsely populated regions include deserts, high mountains and cold tundra.

Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. Push factors drive people away (e.g. war, poor job prospects, natural disasters), while pull factors attract them (e.g. better healthcare, education, safety). Internal migration happens within a country, whereas international migration crosses borders.

Rural-to-urban migration is a powerful trend in many parts of the world as people seek jobs and services in cities. This can cause rapid urbanization, leading to overcrowding, housing shortages and pressure on infrastructure in the destination cities, while some rural areas experience population decline.

5. Urbanisation and Settlement |

Settlements come in a hierarchy: from isolated farms and hamlets, to villages, towns and cities. The bigger the settlement, the higher the number and range of services it provides. Central places serve a surrounding sphere of influence; people are willing to travel further for specialised services that are only found in larger settlements.

Urban land use often follows recognisable patterns. In the Central Business District (CBD), land values are highest, with shops and offices dominating. Surrounding the CBD are older industrial areas and inner-city housing, then suburban residential zones, and finally a rural-urban fringe with larger parks, out-of-town shopping centres and commuter estates.

Sustainable urban development aims to reduce car use, increase green spaces and provide efficient public transport. Brownfield sites (previously developed land) are often reused to avoid urban sprawl on greenfield sites. Good design can help lower pollution, manage waste and build communities that are pleasant to live in.

6. Economic Activities and Industry |

Economic activities are classified into four sectors. Primary industries extract raw materials (farming, mining, fishing). Secondary industries manufacture or process goods (car factories, food processing). Tertiary industries provide services (teaching, retail, banking). Quaternary industries deal with information and research (IT development, scientific research).

The relative importance of these sectors changes as countries develop. In pre-industrial countries, the primary sector dominates. As industrialisation takes hold, secondary employment grows. In post-industrial economies, the tertiary and quaternary sectors become the largest employers, and high-level services and technology drive growth.

Location factors influence where industries set up. For a factory, important factors include access to raw materials, a suitable labour force, good transport links, a reliable energy supply and nearby markets. For service industries, accessibility to customers and a good communication network are often key.

7. Weather and Climate |

Weather describes the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere at a specific place, including temperature, precipitation, wind speed and cloud cover. Climate is the long-term average weather pattern, usually taken over 30 years. A region’s climate determines the general types of weather experienced there.

Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (°C) using a thermometer kept in a Stevenson screen to ensure accurate readings. Precipitation includes rain, snow, sleet and hail, measured with a rain gauge. Wind direction is shown by a wind vane, and wind speed by an anemometer. A barometer measures atmospheric pressure, which helps forecast weather changes.

Climate graphs combine a line graph for temperature and bar graphs for precipitation in one chart, showing the monthly pattern for a location. The main climate zones include tropical, dry, warm-temperate, cool-temperate and polar. The UK has a cool-temperate maritime climate with mild winters, cool summers and rain throughout the year.

8. Environmental Issues and Sustainability |

Human activities, especially burning fossil fuels and deforestation, release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, intensifying the greenhouse effect and causing global warming. Rising temperatures lead to melting ice caps, sea-level rise and more extreme weather events.

Pollution takes many forms: air pollution from factories and vehicles, water pollution from chemicals and sewage, and land pollution from litter and toxic waste. Acid rain, caused by sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides dissolving in rainwater, damages trees, buildings and aquatic ecosystems.

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Managing resources wisely, using renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro), reducing waste through recycling and protecting habitats are all key parts of sustainable development. Small-scale actions, such as saving water and reducing energy use, also make a difference.
