Common Misconceptions in Year 9 CIE Biology and How to Correct Them | Year 9 CIE

📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 9 CIE Biology and How to Correct Them | Year 9 CIE

Year 9 Biology lays the foundation for IGCSE success, but many students carry forward misunderstandings that can trip them up later. This article picks apart the most frequent errors in key topics—from cells and diffusion to enzymes and genetics—and shows you how to correct them with clear reasoning. Reading both the English explanation and its Chinese pairing will help you master the concepts in two languages.

1. ‘All cells have a nucleus’ | “所有细胞都有细胞核”

Many Year 9 students believe that every cell contains a nucleus. This is understandable because textbooks often start with typical animal and plant cells, which do have nuclei. However, mature red blood cells in mammals lose their nucleus during development, and prokaryotic cells like bacteria never had a nucleus—their DNA floats freely in the cytoplasm.

  • Mammalian red blood cells eject their nucleus to make more room for haemoglobin.
  • Bacteria are prokaryotes; their genetic material is not enclosed in a membrane.

2. ‘Respiration is the same as breathing’ | “呼吸作用就是呼吸”

Confusing the mechanical process of breathing with cellular respiration is extremely common. Breathing (ventilation) is the physical movement of air into and out of the lungs, while respiration is a chemical reaction inside cells that releases energy from glucose. All living cells respire, but only certain organisms have lungs and breathe.

Correct understanding: ‘Respiration is the process that releases energy from food; breathing just supplies the oxygen and removes the carbon dioxide.’

3. ‘Oxygen is a product of photosynthesis from carbon dioxide’ | “光合作用产生的氧气来自二氧化碳”

Photosynthesis is often summarised as ‘CO₂ + H₂O → glucose + O₂’. A common mistake is thinking the oxygen atoms in O₂ come from breaking apart carbon dioxide. In reality, the oxygen released during photosynthesis originates from water molecules, not CO₂. The carbon dioxide provides the carbon and one oxygen for glucose, but the free O₂ is from splitting H₂O during the light-dependent reactions. While Year 9 does not need the full biochemistry, knowing ‘the O₂ comes from water’ prevents a persistent misconception.

4. ‘Enzymes are “used up” or die after a reaction’ | “酶在反应后被‘消耗’或死亡”

Students often treat enzymes like fuel that gets burned up. In reality, enzymes are catalysts—they speed up reactions without being changed or used up themselves. A single enzyme molecule can carry out thousands of reactions. Enzymes do not ‘die’, but they can denature at high temperatures or extreme pH, causing a permanent change in shape that stops them from working.

Enzyme function: unchanged at the end of a reaction.

5. ‘Diffusion stops when equilibrium is reached’ | “达到平衡时扩散就停止了”

It is true that diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration. Once equilibrium is reached, the net movement appears to stop, but particles never stop moving. They continue to move randomly in both directions; there is just no overall concentration change. Saying ‘diffusion stops’ is misleading because it implies molecules halt their motion.

6. ‘The heart pumps oxygenated blood to all arteries’ | “心脏将含氧血泵送到所有动脉”

The phrase ‘arteries carry oxygenated blood and veins carry deoxygenated blood’ is a simplification that works for most of the body but not for the pulmonary circuit. The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs, and the pulmonary vein returns oxygenated blood to the heart. Students must learn that the definition of arteries is ‘blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart’, not ‘vessels with oxygen-rich blood’.

  • Arteries = carry blood away from the heart (usually under high pressure).
  • Veins = carry blood towards the heart.

7. ‘Genes and alleles mean the same thing’ | “基因和等位基因是一回事”

Year 9 students first encounter genetics and often use ‘gene’ and ‘allele’ interchangeably. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a particular characteristic (e.g. eye colour). An allele is a different version of that gene (e.g. blue-eye allele vs. brown-eye allele). All individuals have genes; alleles explain the variation.

Gene 基因 Instruction for a trait 性状的指令
A variant form of that instruction

8. ‘Dominant alleles are stronger and more common in a population’ | “显性等位基因更强,在群体中更常见”

Dominance describes how alleles interact, not their frequency in the population. A dominant allele masks the effect of a recessive allele in a heterozygote. It does not mean the trait is ‘better’ or more abundant. For example, polydactyly (extra fingers) is caused by a dominant allele but is rare in humans, while the recessive allele for dry earwax is very common in East Asian populations.

9. ‘Mitosis makes gametes’ | “有丝分裂产生配子”

When learning cell division, some students bundle mitosis and meiosis together. Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells for growth and repair. Gametes (sperm and egg cells) are produced by meiosis, which halves the chromosome number to produce haploid cells. Confusing the two leads to major mistakes in genetics and reproduction topics.

  • Mitosis: 1 division → 2 identical diploid cells.
  • Meiosis: 2 divisions → 4 genetically different haploid gametes.

10. ‘The kidney removes faeces (or solid waste) from blood’ | “肾脏从血液中清除粪便(或固体废物)”

Kidneys filter blood to remove urea, excess salts and water, producing urine. Faeces consists of undigested food, bacteria and dead cells, and is eliminated via the digestive system, not the urinary system. Mixing up excretion and egestion is a common error. Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste; egestion is the removal of undigested food.

11. ‘Plants photosynthesise and animals respire; they do the opposite processes’ | “植物进行光合作用,动物进行呼吸作用;它们做的过程相反”

This paired mistake suggests plants do not respire and animals do not photosynthesise. In reality, plants respire 24 hours a day, just like animals. During the day, photosynthesis usually outstrips respiration, releasing oxygen overall, but at night plants only respire, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Animals cannot photosynthesise, but that does not make respiration ‘the animal process’.

12. ‘Viruses are living cells’ | “病毒是活细胞”

Viruses are not made of cells and do not display all the characteristics of living organisms. They cannot carry out metabolism on their own, do not grow, and can only reproduce inside a host cell. The CIE syllabus expects students to understand that viruses are not classified into the kingdoms of living things. Treating viruses as living can lead to confusion when discussing antibiotics, which do not work against viruses.
