1. States of Matter and the Particle Model | 物质的状态与粒子模型

All substances are made up of tiny particles that are constantly moving. The particle model explains the properties of solids, liquids, and gases in terms of how these particles are arranged and how much energy they possess.

所有物质都由不断运动的微小粒子构成。粒子模型通过解释粒子的排列方式和能量高低,说明了固体、液体和气体的性质。

In a solid, particles are packed closely in a regular pattern and can only vibrate in fixed positions. This gives solids a definite shape and volume. As a solid is heated, particles gain energy and eventually overcome the strong forces holding them together, turning into a liquid – this is melting.

在固体中,粒子紧密排列成规则的图案,只能在固定位置上振动。因此固体有固定的形状和体积。固体受热时,粒子获得能量,最终克服把它们束缚在一起的强作用力,转变为液体——这就是熔化。

Liquid particles are still close together but can slide past one another, allowing the liquid to flow and take the shape of its container. When a liquid is boiled, particles gain enough energy to break free from the surface and become a gas. Gas particles are far apart, move rapidly in all directions, and fill any available space.

液体粒子仍然紧挨在一起,但可以相互滑过,使液体能够流动并呈现容器的形状。当液体沸腾时,粒子获得足够的能量,从表面挣脱,成为气体。气体粒子彼此相距很远,向各个方向快速运动,并充满所有空间。

Diffusion is a process where particles spread from an area of high concentration to one of low concentration. It occurs fastest in gases, slower in liquids, and is negligible in solids, all due to differences in particle movement.

扩散是粒子从高浓度区域向低浓度区域扩散的过程。扩散在气体中最快,液体中较慢,在固体中可忽略不计,这些差异都源于粒子运动方式的不同。

2. Atomic Structure: The Building Blocks | 原子结构:基本构成单元

An atom is the smallest part of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction. It consists of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by shells of electrons.

原子是元素能参与化学反应的最小单元。它由一个含有质子和中子的中央原子核以及环绕核的电子层构成。

  • Protons have a positive charge (+1) and a relative mass of 1. 质子带正电(+1),相对质量为 1。
  • Neutrons have no charge (0) and a relative mass of 1. 中子不带电,相对质量为 1。
  • Electrons have a negative charge (−1) and a negligible mass. 电子带负电(−1),质量可忽略。

The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in the nucleus. It defines the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons. An atom is neutral overall because the number of protons equals the number of electrons.

原子序数(Z)是原子核中的质子数,它决定了元素的种类。质量数(A)是质子与中子数之和。原子整体呈电中性,因为质子数等于电子数。

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. They have identical chemical properties but slightly different physical properties such as density.

同位素是具有相同质子数但中子数不同的同一种元素的原子。它们的化学性质相同,但物理性质(如密度)略有差异。

3. The Periodic Table and Element Patterns | 元素周期表与元素规律

The modern Periodic Table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Rows are called periods, and columns are called groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell and therefore similar chemical behaviour.

现代周期表按原子序数递增的顺序排列元素。横行称为周期,纵列称为族。同族元素最外层电子数相同,因此化学性质相似。

Metals are found on the left and centre of the table. They are typically shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, and ductile. Non‑metals appear on the right; they are often dull, brittle, and poor conductors (except graphite, a form of carbon).

金属位于周期表的左侧和中部。它们通常有光泽,是热和电的良导体,具有延展性和可锻性。非金属位于右侧,通常暗淡、脆、是热和电的不良导体(石墨这种碳的单质除外)。

Group 1 elements are the alkali metals, which are very reactive and must be stored under oil. Group 7 elements are the halogens, reactive non‑metals that form salts when reacting with metals. Group 0 (or 8) elements are the noble gases, which are unreactive because their outer electron shells are full.

第 1 族是碱金属,非常活泼,必须保存在油中。第 7 族是卤素,活泼的非金属,与金属反应生成盐。第 0 族(或第 8 族)是稀有气体,由于最外电子层已满,很不活泼。

4. Chemical Bonding: How Atoms Stick Together | 化学键:原子如何结合在一起

Atoms bond together to achieve a full outer shell of electrons, which makes them more stable. The three main types of bonding studied at this level are ionic, covalent, and metallic.

原子通过相互结合来获得全满的最外电子层,从而变得更稳定。现阶段学习的三种主要化学键类型是离子键、共价键和金属键。

Ionic bonding occurs when a metal atom transfers electrons to a non‑metal atom. The metal becomes a positive ion (cation) and the non‑metal becomes a negative ion (anion). Opposite charges attract, forming a giant ionic lattice. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl) is made of Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions.

当金属原子将电子转移给非金属原子时形成离子键。金属变成阳离子,非金属变成阴离子。相反电荷相互吸引,形成巨大的离子晶格。例如,氯化钠(NaCl)由 Na⁺ 和 Cl⁻ 离子构成。

Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non‑metal atoms. The shared pair of electrons holds the atoms together in a molecule. Water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and methane (CH₄) are all simple molecular substances held together by covalent bonds.

共价键涉及非金属原子之间共用电子对。共用的电子对将原子结合在一起形成分子。水(H₂O)、二氧化碳(CO₂)和甲烷(CH₄)都是由共价键结合形成的简单分子物质。

5. Writing and Balancing Chemical Equations | 化学方程式的书写与配平

A chemical equation uses symbols and formulas to describe what happens in a reaction. Reactants are written on the left, products on the right, and an arrow (→) points from reactants to products.

化学方程式用符号和化学式来描述反应中发生的情况。反应物写在左边,生成物写在右边,箭头(→)从反应物指向生成物。

The law of conservation of mass states that atoms are neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. Therefore, a balanced equation must have the same number of each type of atom on both sides. For example: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO.

质量守恒定律指出,在化学反应中原子既不会凭空产生也不会凭空消失。因此,配平的方程式两边每一类原子的数目必须相等。例如:2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO。

State symbols are added after each formula to show the physical state: (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas, and (aq) for aqueous solution. An example is: CaCO₃(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l) + CO₂(g).

在每种化学式后面加上状态符号以表示物理状态:(s) 表示固体,(l) 表示液体,(g) 表示气体,(aq) 表示水溶液。例如:CaCO₃(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l) + CO₂(g)。

6. Acids, Bases and the pH Scale | 酸、碱与 pH 标度

An acid is a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), and nitric acid (HNO₃). Alkalis are soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water.

酸是在水中溶解时释放出氢离子(H⁺)的物质。常见的实验室用酸包括盐酸(HCl)、硫酸(H₂SO₄)和硝酸(HNO₃)。碱是可溶的、在水中释放氢氧根离子(OH⁻)的物质。

The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. It runs from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), with 7 being neutral. Indicators such as litmus, phenolphthalein, and universal indicator show different colours at different pH values.

pH 标度测量溶液的酸碱度。范围从 0(强酸性)到 14(强碱性),7 为中性。指示剂如石蕊、酚酞和通用指示剂在不同 pH 值下显示不同的颜色。

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base, producing a salt and water. A typical word equation is: acid + base → salt + water. The symbol equation for hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide is: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O.

中和反应是酸和碱之间的反应,生成盐和水。典型的文字表达式为:酸 + 碱 → 盐 + 水。盐酸与氢氧化钠的符号方程式为:HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O。

7. Separation Techniques for Mixtures | 混合物的分离技术

Chemists use various techniques to separate mixtures without making new substances. The method chosen depends on the physical properties of the components, such as particle size, boiling point, and solubility.

化学家使用各种技术来分离混合物,同时不产生新物质。所选方法取决于组分的物理性质,如颗粒大小、沸点和溶解度。

  • Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid. 过滤用于分离不溶性固体与液体。
  • Crystallisation is used to obtain a pure soluble salt from a solution by evaporating the solvent. 结晶用于通过蒸发溶剂从溶液中获得纯净的可溶性盐。
  • Simple distillation separates a liquid from a solid solution or two liquids with very different boiling points. 简单蒸馏用于从溶液中分离液体,或分离沸点差异很大的两种液体。
  • Fractional distillation separates a mixture of liquids with close boiling points, such as crude oil fractions. 分馏用于分离沸点相近的液体混合物,如石油馏分。
  • Paper chromatography separates small amounts of dissolved substances, such as food colourings, based on their solubility in a solvent. 纸色谱法根据物质在溶剂中的溶解度不同,分离少量溶解物质,如食用色素。

8. Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction | 影响反应速率的因素

The rate of a chemical reaction tells us how quickly reactants are used up or products are formed. Understanding and controlling reaction rates is essential in both the laboratory and industry.

化学反应速率告诉我们反应物消耗或生成物形成的快慢。理解和控制反应速率在实验室和工业中都至关重要。

Collision theory states that for a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy (activation energy) and with the correct orientation. The more successful collisions per second, the faster the reaction rate.

碰撞理论指出,要发生反应,粒子必须以足够的能量(活化能)并取正确取向进行碰撞。每秒内成功碰撞的次数越多,反应速率越快。

Four main factors affect the rate: increasing the temperature gives particles more kinetic energy, so they collide more often and more energetically. Increasing the concentration (or pressure for gases) crowds more particles together, raising collision frequency. Decreasing particle size (increasing surface area) exposes more particles to react. Adding a catalyst provides an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy, speeding up the reaction without being used up.

四个主要影响速率的因素:升高温度使粒子动能增加,碰撞更频繁、更有力。增大浓度(或对气体增大压强)使更多粒子聚集,提高碰撞频率。减小颗粒尺寸(增大表面积)使更多粒子暴露出来参与反应。加入催化剂能提供活化能更低的替代途径,加快反应而自身不被消耗。

9. Introduction to Energy Changes in Reactions | 化学反应中的能量变化入门

Chemical reactions always involve energy being released or absorbed. Exothermic reactions transfer energy from the reacting substances to the surroundings, usually felt as heat. Examples include combustion, neutralisation, and respiration.

化学反应总是伴随着能量的释放或吸收。放热反应将能量从反应物传递给周围环境,通常表现为放热。例如燃烧、中和反应和呼吸作用。

Endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings, causing the temperature to drop. Thermal decomposition of carbonates and photosynthesis are endothermic. The energy change can be represented using a simple energy profile diagram, with the difference between product and reactant energy shown as ΔH.

吸热反应从周围环境吸收能量,导致温度下降。碳酸盐的热分解和光合作用都是吸热反应。能量变化可以用简单的能量变化图表示,生成物与反应物之间的能量差记为 ΔH。

In exothermic reactions, the products have lower energy than the reactants (ΔH is negative). In endothermic reactions, products have higher energy and ΔH is positive. Understanding these energy transfers helps us design fuels, hand warmers, and cold packs.

在放热反应中,生成物的能量低于反应物(ΔH 为负值)。在吸热反应中,生成物的能量较高,ΔH 为正值。理解这些能量传递有助于我们设计燃料、暖手宝和冰袋。

10. Laboratory Safety and Essential Practical Skills | 实验室安全与基本实验技能

Safety is the top priority in a chemistry laboratory. Always wear safety goggles and a lab coat, tie back long hair, and never eat or drink in the lab. Know the location of fire extinguishers, eye-wash stations, and emergency exits.

安全是化学实验室的第一要务。务必穿戴护目镜和实验服,束起长发,严禁在实验室饮食。须知道灭火器、洗眼器和紧急出口的位置。

Common equipment you must be able to use includes the Bunsen burner (heating, using the blue roaring flame and yellow safety flame), measuring cylinders (for approximate volumes), burettes and pipettes (for accurate volumes), and electronic balances. Heating substances in a test tube should be done at a 45° angle, pointing away from yourself and others.

你必须会使用的常见设备包括:本生灯(加热时用蓝色火焰,不用时用黄色安全火焰)、量筒(用于量取大概体积)、滴定管和移液管(用于精确体积)及电子天平。在试管中加热物质时,试管应呈 45° 角,管口不得朝向自己或他人。

When recording observations, be precise: note colour changes, formation of precipitates, gas bubbles, temperature changes, and any smells (by wafting, not directly sniffing). Quantitatively, learn to measure the mass of substances to 0.01 g and record it correctly.

记录观察结果时要精确:注明颜色变化、沉淀生成、气泡、温度变化以及任何气味(通过扇闻而非直接闻)。定量方面,学会称量物质至 0.01 g,并正确记录。

11. Bridging Skills: How to Think Like an IGCSE Chemist | 衔接技能:如何像 IGCSE 化学家一样思考

As you move into Year 9, the focus shifts from simply describing what happens to explaining why it happens using particle theory, bonding, and energy. Start practising by asking “why” after every observation.

进入 Year 9 后,学习重点从简单描述现象转向利用粒子理论、化学键和能量来解释现象背后的原因。从现在开始,训练自己在每一个观察后追问“为什么”。

Make sure you can confidently write formulas for common ions (Na⁺, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, NH₄⁺) and construct balanced equations with state symbols. Practise applying mole concepts? Not yet, but you should begin to link mass to number of particles through simple ratios. Revise key definitions such as element, compound, mixture, atom, molecule, and ion until they are second nature.

确保你能自信地书写常见离子的符号(Na⁺、Cl⁻、SO₄²⁻、NH₄⁺),并写出带有状态符号且配平的化学方程式。暂时还不用练习摩尔概念,但你可以开始通过简单的比例关系将质量与微粒数联系起来。反复复习以下定义直至习惯成自然:元素、化合物、混合物、原子、分子和离子。

Finally, develop the habit of reading the question carefully and using scientific vocabulary in your answers. A bridging chemist thinks both qualitatively and quantitatively – if you measure something, always think about its meaning in terms of particles and energy.

最后,养成仔细读题并在答案中使用科学词汇的习惯。一位正在完成衔接的化学家既从定性角度思考也从定量角度思考——如果你测量了某个量,总要想想它在粒子与能量层面代表着什么。
