1. The Elements of Drama |
The elements of drama are the fundamental building blocks that bring a performance to life. In CCEA Drama, you will work with several key elements: role and character, relationships, tension, time, space, language, mood, and symbol.
Tension is the force that drives the story forward and captivates the audience. It can be created through conflict, suspense, or a ticking clock in the plot.
Space refers to both the physical area of the stage and the imagined setting of the scene. How performers use levels, proximity, and the different stage areas shapes the audience’s understanding.
Mood and symbol help to communicate meaning beyond words. Lighting, sound, props, and colour contribute to the emotional atmosphere, while a prop or gesture can stand for a bigger idea.
2. Character Development |
Building a believable character is at the heart of drama. You can use a range of strategies to explore who your character is, what they want, and how they behave.
Hot seating is a popular technique where you answer questions in character. This helps to uncover backstory, motivations, and secrets that make your performance more authentic.
Role on the wall involves drawing an outline of a character and adding thoughts, feelings, or facts inside (internal) and outside (external appearance). Thought tracking allows you to speak a character’s inner thoughts during a freeze-frame.
Always consider your character’s objective (what they want) and their super-objective (the overarching desire throughout the play). This gives every action and line a purpose.
3. Voice and Speech |
Your voice is one of your most powerful performance tools. Developing control over pitch, pace, pause, volume, and tone allows you to convey emotion and meaning effectively.
Pitch refers to how high or low your voice is. A higher pitch can suggest excitement or nervousness, while a lower pitch may convey authority or sadness.
Pace is the speed at which you speak. Quick pace can indicate urgency, panic, or excitement; slow pace can create tension, seriousness, or sadness. Don’t underestimate the power of a well-placed pause – it gives the audience time to absorb a moment and can heighten drama.
Volume, tone, and articulation work together to make your performance clear and expressive. Always project your voice so the audience can hear, and use varied tone to reflect your character’s feelings.
4. Physicality and Movement |
Physicality means using your body to communicate character and emotion. Every gesture, posture, and facial expression contributes to the story you are telling.
Gestures are movements of the hands or head to express an idea or emotion. Posture is how you hold your body – slumped shoulders might show defeat, whereas a rigid back can show control or tension.
Facial expressions and eye contact are vital for connecting with the audience and other performers. Raised eyebrows, a clenched jaw, or a fixed stare can reveal hidden thoughts. Eye contact can show relationships or direct focus.
Movement across the stage, including gait (the way a character walks), speed, and use of levels (high, medium, low), creates visual interest. Proxemics – the distance between performers – can show relationships and status.
5. Staging and Blocking |
Staging refers to the overall placement of scenery, props, and performers within the performance space. Blocking is the precise movement and positioning an actor follows during a scene.
