1. Map Skills & Ordnance Survey Terms |

Scale – The ratio between a distance on a map and the actual distance on the ground. A scale of 1:50 000 means 1 cm on the map represents 50 000 cm (500 m) in reality. Large-scale maps show more detail over a small area; small-scale maps cover wider regions with less detail.

Contour line – A line on a map joining points of equal height above sea level. Closely packed contours indicate steep slopes, while widely spaced contours show gentle slopes. Contour lines never cross each other on a physical map.

Grid reference – A coordinate system that allows any location on an Ordnance Survey map to be identified. A four-figure reference (e.g. 4520) gives a grid square, while a six-figure reference (e.g. 453205) pinpoints a precise spot.

Relief – The shape and height of the land surface, including valleys, hills and plains. Relief can be represented by contour lines, spot heights, trigonometrical stations and layer shading on maps.

Longitude and latitude – Imaginary lines used to locate places on the Earth. Lines of latitude run horizontally around the globe parallel to the Equator; lines of longitude run vertically from the North Pole to the South Pole.

2. River Landscapes & Processes |

Watershed – The imaginary line forming the boundary of a drainage basin, separating one river system from another. Rain falling on one side of a watershed flows into a different river.

Meander – A pronounced bend or curve in a river channel, usually found in the middle and lower course. Over time, erosion on the outer bank and deposition on the inner bank cause the meander to become more exaggerated.

Oxbow lake – A crescent-shaped lake formed when a meander is cut off from the main river. The river eventually finds a shorter, straighter path, and the old bend becomes an isolated lake.

Floodplain – The flat area of land alongside a river that is naturally prone to flooding. Fertile alluvium (silt) deposited during floods makes floodplains excellent for farming.

River erosion – The process by which a river wears away its bed and banks. Key types include vertical erosion (deepening the channel) and lateral erosion (widening the valley), often through hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution.

3. Coastal Landscapes |

Headland and bay – A headland is a narrow piece of land projecting into the sea, typically formed from more resistant rock. A bay is a wide, curved indentation where softer rock has been eroded away more quickly.

Cliff – A steep, near-vertical rock face formed by the undercutting action of waves. As wave-cut notches deepen, the overlying rock eventually collapses, causing the cliff to retreat inland.

Wave-cut platform – A gently sloping rocky surface exposed at the base of a retreating cliff. As the cliff erodes backwards, a platform of abrasion-levelled bedrock is left behind, often visible at low tide.

Longshore drift – The movement of sediment along a coast by waves approaching at an angle. Material is carried up the beach in the swash and returned straight down the slope under gravity, resulting in a zigzag transport parallel to the shore.

Spit – A narrow ridge of sand or shingle extending from the coastline, built up by longshore drift where the coast changes direction. Spits often curve at their ends and may enclose a lagoon or salt marsh.

4. Weather and Climate |

Precipitation – Any form of moisture reaching the Earth’s surface from the atmosphere, including rain, snow, sleet and hail. It is measured in millimetres using a rain gauge.

Commuting – The regular journey people make between their home and workplace, often from suburban or rural areas into a city. High levels of commuting can lead to traffic congestion and air pollution.

Greenfield site – An area of undeveloped land, often on the edge of a town or city, being considered for new construction. Building on greenfield sites can threaten natural habitats and agricultural land but is often cheaper than redeveloping brownfield land.

7. Development and Globalisation |

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – The total value of goods and services produced within a country in one year, usually expressed in US dollars. GDP per capita divides this total by the population to give an average economic output per person.

Human Development Index (HDI) – A composite indicator of development using life expectancy, education (mean and expected years of schooling) and income (GNI per capita). HDI recognises that development is not just about wealth but also health and knowledge.

Trade – The buying and selling of goods and services between countries. Exports are goods sold to other nations; imports are goods purchased from abroad. A trade deficit occurs when imports exceed exports.

Fair trade – A trading partnership that aims to give producers in low-income countries better prices, decent working conditions and a fairer deal. Fair trade premiums are often invested in community projects such as schools or clean water systems.

8. Tectonic Hazards |

Plate boundary – The margin where two tectonic plates meet. Destructive boundaries see plates collide (one sinks under the other), constructive boundaries see plates move apart, and conservative boundaries see plates slide past each other.

Subduction – The process at a destructive plate boundary where a denser oceanic plate sinks beneath a continental plate into the mantle. Subduction creates deep ocean trenches and can trigger powerful earthquakes and volcanic activity.
