📚 Year 9 CIE Accounting: Practical Assessment Key Points | 九年级CIE会计实践考核要点

This guide covers the key practical skills you will be assessed on in Year 9 CIE Accounting. Practical assessments focus on your ability to record transactions accurately, apply double-entry rules, and prepare basic financial statements. Mastering these techniques will build a strong foundation for IGCSE Accounting and real-world financial literacy.

1. Understanding the Accounting Equation |

The accounting equation, Assets = Liabilities + Capital, must be applied to every business transaction. Always check that both sides of the equation remain equal after recording a change.

Assets are resources owned by the business, such as cash, inventory, and equipment. Liabilities represent amounts owed to third parties, while capital is the owner’s claim on the business.

For every transaction, identify which categories increase or decrease. For example, buying equipment with cash increases one asset and decreases another, so the equation stays balanced.

2. Double-Entry Bookkeeping Rules |

Double-entry bookkeeping means every transaction affects at least two accounts. For each transaction, you must record a debit entry in one account and a credit entry in another account with an equal amount.

Memorise the five main account types and their rules: Assets increase on the debit side, decrease on credit; Liabilities and Capital increase on credit, decrease on debit; Income increases on credit; Expenses increase on debit.

When recording in T-accounts, always write the date, details, and amount clearly. Remember that the total debits must equal total credits for every transaction.

3. Using Source Documents as Evidence |

Source documents provide the evidence for recording transactions. In practical tasks, you will often be given invoices, receipts, credit notes, and bank statements to work from.

An invoice shows a credit sale or purchase and includes details like date, buyer, seller, and amount. A receipt confirms that cash has been received or paid.

Always check the source document for the correct amount and date before making any entry. Incomplete or incorrect documents must be followed up but can still be used to identify the transaction type.

4. Recording Transactions in the Journal |

The general journal is used for transactions that do not fit into specialised subsidiary books. Common journal entries include opening entries, correction of errors, and purchase or sale of non-current assets on credit.

A journal entry must show the date, accounts to be debited and credited, a brief narrative, and the amounts. Debit accounts are written first, followed by credit accounts indented slightly.

In practical exams, you might be asked to journalise a single transaction or a series of adjustments. Always narrate clearly so anyone reviewing the journal understands why the entry was made.

5. Posting to Ledger Accounts |

After journalising, the next step is posting to the relevant ledger accounts. Use T-accounts to visualise debits on the left and credits on the right.

Each transaction requires posting to at least two ledger accounts. Always transfer the date and a reference to the opposite account so that you can trace entries later.

Balance off ledger accounts at the end of a period: find the difference between debits and credits, enter the balance carried down, and bring it down as the opening balance for the next period.

6. Preparing a Trial Balance |

A trial balance lists all ledger account balances at a particular date. It is used to check the arithmetical accuracy of the double-entry records: total debits must equal total credits.

If the trial balance does not balance, there is an error in recording, posting, or arithmetic. Common errors include transposition errors (e.g., 69 written as 96) and omission of one side of an entry.

In a practical assessment, you must prepare a trial balance neatly, listing assets first, then liabilities, capital, and finally income and expenses. Clearly show the heading ‘Trial Balance as at [date]’.

7. Bank Reconciliation Statements |

A bank reconciliation compares the cash book balance with the bank statement balance, identifying items causing differences. These items include unpresented cheques, deposits in transit, bank charges, and direct credits.

To prepare a bank reconciliation, start with the updated cash book balance, then adjust for unpresented cheques and deposits not yet credited by the bank to arrive at the bank statement balance.

In practical tasks, you will receive a bank statement and a cash book with some items already corrected. You must update the cash book first, then complete the reconciliation statement.

8. Adjusting for Accruals and Prepayments |

Under the accruals concept, expenses and income must be recorded in the period they are incurred or earned, not when cash is received or paid. Adjustments for accruals and prepayments are common in practical exams.

An accrued expense is an expense that has been incurred but not yet paid; it increases the expense account and creates a current liability. A prepayment is an expense paid in advance, which should be reduced from the expense and shown as a current asset.

When adjusting, always update the relevant expense account and the accrual or prepayment account. Then ensure the adjusted amounts are used in the income statement and statement of financial position.

9. Preparing Simple Financial Statements |

At Year 9 level, you are expected to prepare a simple income statement to calculate profit or loss, and a statement of financial position to show assets, liabilities, and capital at the year end.

The income statement lists revenue and gains, minus expenses and losses. The net profit or loss is then transferred to the capital section of the statement of financial position.

A statement of financial position follows the accounting equation format: non-current assets + current assets = capital + non-current liabilities + current liabilities.

Always use proper headings: ‘Income Statement for the year ended [date]’ and ‘Statement of Financial Position as at [date]’. Double-check that your net profit and closing capital agree with earlier workings.

10. Identifying and Correcting Errors |

Practical assessments frequently test your ability to find and fix bookkeeping errors. When a trial balance does not balance, use a suspense account to temporarily hold the difference while you investigate.

Errors that do not affect the trial balance agreement, such as complete omission or commission, are trickier to detect. You must trace through journal entries and ledger postings to uncover them.

When you locate a mistake, pass a correcting journal entry: debit and credit the correct accounts, close the suspense account, and update the ledger. Always narrate the correction clearly.
