Welcome to the fascinating world of philosophy! This article covers the core topics typically encountered in a Year 9 CIE Philosophy course. Philosophy encourages you to think deeply, question assumptions, and construct logical arguments about fundamental questions concerning existence, knowledge, ethics, and society.

1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy literally means ‘love of wisdom’. It is the rational inquiry into the most basic questions about reality, knowledge, and values. Unlike science, which relies on empirical experiments, philosophy uses logical reasoning and thought experiments to explore concepts such as justice, truth, and the self.

Key branches of philosophy include metaphysics (the study of reality), epistemology (the study of knowledge), ethics (the study of morality), and logic (the study of correct reasoning).

2. Logic and Argumentation |

An argument in philosophy is a set of statements (premises) intended to support a conclusion. A valid deductive argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. For example: All humans are mortal. Socrates is human. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

Inductive arguments, on the other hand, provide probable support for the conclusion. Most swans we have observed are white, so the next swan is likely to be white. This makes the conclusion likely but not certain.

Common fallacies include the ad hominem fallacy (attacking the person instead of the argument) and the straw man fallacy (misrepresenting an opponent’s view). Recognizing fallacies helps evaluate reasoning critically.

In symbolic logic, we use symbols: ¬ (negation), ∧ (conjunction), ∨ (disjunction), → (conditional), and ≡ (biconditional). For instance, modus ponens is: (P → Q) ∧ P, therefore Q.

3. Epistemology: How Do We Know?

Epistemology asks what knowledge is and how we acquire it. Traditionally, knowledge is defined as justified true belief (JTB). For someone to know that P, they must believe that P, P must be true, and they must have justification for believing P.

However, the Gettier problem challenges this definition by showing cases where justified true belief may still not count as knowledge. For instance, a person might justifiably believe a true proposition based on a lucky guess or flawed reasoning.

Scepticism questions whether we can have any certain knowledge at all. Descartes famously used the method of doubt, imagining an evil demon deceiving him, to reach the indubitable truth ‘I think, therefore I am’ (Cogito, ergo sum).

4. Rationalism and Empiricism |

Rationalism holds that reason is the primary source of knowledge, and that some ideas are innate. Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz argued that we can gain substantive knowledge about the world through reason alone, independent of sensory experience.

Empiricism, championed by Locke, Berkeley, and Hume, claims that all knowledge comes from sensory experience. The mind at birth is a tabula rasa (blank slate). Without sensation and reflection, we would have no ideas.

Kant attempted a synthesis: while all knowledge begins with experience, it does not all arise out of experience. The mind actively structures experience using innate categories such as space, time, and causality.

5. Ethics: Theories of Right and Wrong |

Ethics investigates moral principles. Consequentialism, most famously utilitarianism, judges actions by their outcomes. Jeremy Bentham’s utilitarianism proposes the greatest happiness principle: an action is right if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number.

Deontology, associated with Immanuel Kant, focuses on duties and rules. Kant’s categorical imperative states that you should act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. It emphasises moral absolutes, not consequences.

Virtue ethics, inspired by Aristotle, focuses on character rather than specific actions. It asks: what kind of person should I be? A virtuous person develops traits like courage, temperance, and wisdom to flourish (eudaimonia).

6. Free Will and Determinism |

Determinism is the view that every event is causally necessitated by prior events and natural laws. If determinism is true, all our choices are determined, which seems to conflict with free will and moral responsibility.

Libertarianism (in philosophy of free will) holds that we do have free will and that determinism is false. Some agent-causal theories assert that we can initiate actions as uncaused causes.

Compatibilism (soft determinism) argues that free will and determinism are compatible. According to Hume, an action is free if it is caused by the agent’s own desires and will, even if those desires are themselves determined. Free will means being able to act according to one’s own motives without external coercion.

7. Mind and Body |

The mind-body problem concerns the relationship between mental phenomena (like thoughts, sensations) and physical processes. Dualism, most notably defended by Descartes, claims that mind and body are two distinct substances: mental substance (non-physical) and physical substance (extended). Interactionism suggests they causally influence each other.

Physicalism (or materialism) is the view that everything is physical, and mental states are identical to or supervene on brain states. The identity theory claims that mental states just are certain brain processes.

Functionalism argues that mental states are defined by their causal roles, not by their physical makeup. This allows for the possibility of artificial intelligence having mental states, as long as the functional organisation is equivalent.

8. Arguments for the Existence of God |

The ontological argument, proposed by Anselm, defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. If God exists only in the mind, we can conceive of a greater being that also exists in reality. Therefore, God must exist in reality. Descartes also offered a version based on the perfect being having the property of existence.

The cosmological argument starts from the existence of the universe and seeks a first cause. Aquinas’ Second Way argues that everything
