1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy comes from the Greek words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom), meaning ‘the love of wisdom’. It is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, and mind. Philosophers use critical thinking and logical argument to explore ideas that cannot be answered simply by empirical observation.

The main branches of philosophy are epistemology (the theory of knowledge), ethics (moral philosophy), metaphysics (the nature of reality), and logic (the principles of correct reasoning). Each branch asks different but interconnected questions, such as ‘What can we know?’, ‘What is the right thing to do?’ and ‘What is the nature of the mind?’.

2. Deductive vs. Inductive Arguments |

An argument in philosophy is a set of statements where some (premises) are offered as reasons to support another (the conclusion). A deductive argument claims that if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. For example: All humans are mortal (premise 1); Socrates is a human (premise 2); therefore, Socrates is mortal (conclusion). If both premises are true, the conclusion necessarily follows.

An inductive argument suggests that if the premises are true, the conclusion is likely to be true but not guaranteed. For instance: The sun has risen every day in recorded history; therefore, the sun will rise tomorrow. This conclusion is highly probable but not logically certain, because it is always possible that an exception will occur.

In philosophy, recognising the type of argument helps you assess its strength. A sound deductive argument has true premises and valid logical form; a strong inductive argument makes its conclusion highly probable.

3. Common Logical Fallacies |

A fallacy is a flawed pattern of reasoning that undermines the logic of an argument. Being able to spot fallacies is an essential skill in philosophy. The ad hominem fallacy attacks the person making an argument rather than addressing the argument itself. For example, dismissing a scientist’s climate research by insulting their appearance is an ad hominem.

The straw man fallacy misrepresents an opponent’s argument to make it easier to attack. If someone says ‘We should reduce sugar intake for health’, and another replies ‘So you want to ban all sweets and destroy the food industry?’, that is a straw man.

Another common fallacy is the false dilemma (false dichotomy), which presents only two extreme options when more exist. The appeal to popularity (argumentum ad populum) wrongly assumes that a belief is true simply because many people hold it. Philosophy demands evidence and reasoning, not a vote count.

4. The Design Argument |

The Design Argument, also known as the teleological argument, claims that the complexity and apparent purpose in the natural world are best explained by an intelligent designer—God. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy is the classic illustration: if you found a watch on a heath, its intricate parts working together for a purpose would lead you to infer a watchmaker. By analogy, the universe, with its even greater complexity, points to a cosmic designer.

Critics, such as David Hume, argue that the analogy is weak because the universe is not obviously like a machine. Hume also pointed out that even if a designer exists, it does not prove the designer is the all-powerful, all-good God of classical theism—the designer could be imperfect or a committee of gods. Moreover, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection provides a powerful naturalistic explanation for the appearance of design in living organisms without the need for a designer.

5. The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument does not focus on the design of the universe but on the fact that it exists at all. Thomas Aquinas formulated the ‘First Cause’ argument: every effect has a cause; the universe is an effect, so it must have a cause. Since an infinite regress of causes is impossible, Aquinas reasoned there must be a first, uncaused cause which everyone calls God.

Philosophers have raised several objections. One question asks ‘What caused God?’ If God can be accepted as an uncaused entity, why cannot the universe be uncaused? Some also suggest that an infinite series of causes might be logically possible, or that the Big Bang can serve as a first physical event without any divine agency. Moreover, even if a first cause is established, the argument does not demonstrate that this cause has the attributes of a loving, personal God.

6. The Problem of Evil |

The Problem of Evil is one of the strongest challenges to belief in an omnipotent (all-powerful), omnibenevolent (all-loving) God. The logical problem of evil states that the existence of an all-powerful, all-loving God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil and suffering. If God is all-powerful, He can prevent evil; if He is all-loving, He would want to prevent evil. Yet evil exists, so such a God cannot exist.

The evidential problem of evil goes further by focusing on the seemingly excessive and pointless suffering in the world, such as the suffering of innocent children or natural disasters. Theodicies, such as the free will defence, argue that God allows evil because genuine free will is of such great value that it justifies the risk of moral evil. However, critics reply that free will cannot justify natural evil (like earthquakes) and that an omnipotent God could have created free beings who always choose good.

7. Utilitarianism: Greatest Happiness Principle |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory, meaning it judges actions by their outcomes. Jeremy Bentham proposed the principle of utility: the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Happiness is defined in terms of pleasure and the absence of pain.

Bentham devised the hedonic calculus to quantify pleasure and pain using seven criteria: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity and extent. John Stuart Mill later refined utilitarianism by distinguishing between higher pleasures (intellectual, moral) and lower pleasures (bodily). He insisted that ‘it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied’, emphasising the quality of happiness over mere quantity.

Strengths of utilitarianism include its impartiality and its flexible approach to complex moral dilemmas. However, it faces criticism for potentially justifying unjust acts if they increase overall happiness, and for being impractical to calculate all foreseeable consequences. It may also conflict with individual rights and obligations of justice.

8. Deontology: Duty-based Ethics |

Deontology, most closely associated with Immanuel Kant, takes a completely different approach to ethics. It claims that actions are right or wrong in themselves, irrespective of their consequences. Morality is a matter of duty and following universal rational rules. Kant’s central idea is the categorical imperative, which commands us to act according to rules that could be willed as universal laws without contradiction.

One formulation of the categorical imperative is: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ For example, making a lying promise cannot be universalised because if everyone made lying promises, the institution of promising would collapse. Kant also emphasised that human beings must be treated as ends in themselves, never merely as a means to an end. This principle safeguards human dignity and rules out exploitation.
