📚 IGCSE WJEC Media Studies: High-Frequency Exam Points & Common Mistakes Analysis | IGCSE WJEC

This revision guide breaks down the most frequently tested concepts in the IGCSE WJEC Media Studies exam, paired with the mistakes that cost students the most marks. We will walk through each topic area in the order it typically appears in the examination, so you can revise strategically and avoid the traps.

1. Media Language: Codes and Conventions |

The single most tested area across all WJEC IGCSE Media papers is media language. You must be able to identify camera work, editing, sound, mise-en-scène, and layout codes, then explain how they create meaning.

  • Camera shots and angles: close-up, medium shot, long shot, high angle, low angle, canted angle. For each one, link it to an effect: “a high-angle shot makes the character appear vulnerable and powerless.”

  • Editing: continuity editing, jump cuts, cross-cutting, montage, slow motion. State the pace and its emotional impact.

  • Sound: diegetic, non-diegetic, sound bridge, silence, music tempo, volume. Silence often builds tension, while upbeat music conveys happiness.

  • Mise-en-scène: lighting (high-key, low-key), colour palette, props, costume, setting, figure behaviour. Every visual element is a deliberate choice.

Common mistake: students list techniques without saying what effect they create. A list of shots with no analysis earns very few marks. Always use the formula: technique → what is shown → what it suggests → why it matters.

2. Representation: Constructing Reality |

Representation is the second pillar of the WJEC syllabus. You must analyse how media texts construct versions of people, groups, and places, and judge whether these are fair, accurate, or stereotypical.

Key groups to revise: gender, age, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, class, and regional identity. For each, ask three questions: Who is shown? How are they shown? Who is missing?

  • Stereotypes vs. countertypes: a stereotype reduces a group to a few exaggerated traits; a countertype actively challenges that simplified image.

  • Under-representation: when a group appears rarely, their absence implies they are less important in society.

  • Misrepresentation: when a group is shown inaccurately, distorting audiences’ real-world perceptions, e.g. teenagers always shown as lazy or criminal.

Common mistake: writing “this is a stereotype” and stopping. The examiner wants you to explain the ideology behind the representation and its effect on the audience. Link representation to context: why is this representation circulating now?

3. Audience: Targeting and Response |

Question 3 on the WJEC paper typically focuses on audience: how texts target an audience, how audiences respond, and why they consume media. You need demographic and psychographic profiling.

Demographics: age, gender, income, education, ethnicity |

Psychographics: lifestyle, values, interests, personality |

The three audience theories you must know:

  • Hypodermic needle model: the media directly “injects” messages into a passive audience, who accept them without question. Early theory, now widely criticised.

  • Two-step flow: opinion leaders receive media messages first, then pass them on to others through personal influence. Audiences are active intermediaries.

  • Uses and gratifications: audiences use media to fulfil needs: information, personal identity, integration/social interaction, and entertainment.

Common mistake: applying a theory without justifying why. If you cite the hypodermic needle model, explain what evidence in the text would support it and who the “injected” audience is. The examiner rewards theory + text + audience = fully developed analysis.

4. Media Industries and Institutions |

For the case study question, you must know the ownership, funding, distribution, and regulation context of at least two texts, ideally from different media sectors (film, television, print, online).

  • Ownership model: commercial (advertising-funded conglomerates), public service (e.g. BBC, licence fee), independent, or voluntary/non-profit.

  • Convergence: media companies merging across platforms; a film studio owning its own streaming service to control distribution from production to audience.

  • Regulation: in the UK, Ofcom regulates broadcast media; the IPSO self-regulates most print newspapers. Consider how regulation affects content decisions.

Common mistake: recalling facts about the case study but not linking them to the question. For example, if asked about how technology affects production, do not simply list the company’s history. Connect each fact to the specific issue the question raises.

5. Genre Analysis: Expectation and Innovation |

Genre questions ask you to identify codes and conventions, then explain how a text follows, subverts, or hybridises them. The formula is convention + evidence + function.

Take a thriller: expect low-key lighting, fast editing, suspenseful non-diegetic music. Now add subversion: the director uses bright, cheerful music during the chase scene to disorientate the audience. That is an evaluative point worth high marks.

Common mistake: describing genre conventions generically without applying them to your chosen text. You must quote the specific code from the specific text and explain its specific effect in that sequence or scene. Generic answers cannot access high bands.

6. Narrative Structure: Theorists and Application |

Narrative is often tested within the “media language” umbrella. You should be ready to apply Todorov and Propp to a moving image extract.

  • Todorov’s equilibrium model: equilibrium → disruption → recognition of disruption → attempt to repair → restored equilibrium (or new equilibrium).

  • Propp’s character types: hero, villain, princess, helper, donor, dispatcher, false hero. Not every character appears in every story, but the archetypes recur across genres.

  • Barthes’ enigma code: the text deliberately withholds information to create mystery and keep audiences engaged.

Common mistake: defining the theories but failing to apply the terminology to the extract’s actual events. For example, “Todorov’s disruption occurs when the photograph appears” is an application; “Todorov’s theory describes equilibrium” is a definition, not an application.

7. Context: Social, Cultural, Historical, Political |

Modern WJEC mark schemes reward contextual understanding of why a media text was made and how it reflects its era. Context is not a separate section; it should be embedded in your analysis of representation and audience.

For example, analysing a 1960s women’s magazine cover requires awareness of second-wave feminism; analysing a 2020s social media campaign requires awareness of digital native audiences and algorithmic curation.

Common mistake: writing a paragraph of pure history with no link to the text. Historical context is only credit-worthy when it is tied to a media decision. Say “because of X historical condition, the producer chose Y convention, which signals Z to the audience.”

8. Command Words: Decoding the Question |

Every mark you lose from misreading a question is avoidable. WJEC IGCSE Media uses consistent command words; your response style must shift accordingly.

Name a technique; no explanation needed.
Describe | 描述 State what is visible/heard in the text.
Explain/Analyse | 解释/分析 Technique + effect + meaning.
Evaluate/Discuss | 评价/讨论 Weigh different interpretations or evidence.

Common mistake: treating an “analyse” question as a “describe” question. Descriptive answers fill lines but not mark-scheme criteria; every observation must move toward an interpretive statement about meaning.

9. Section A Traps: The Unseen Text | A 部分陷阱:未见文本

Section A always presents an unseen audio-visual or print text. Students typically lose marks in three specific ways.

  • Traps 1 — “Spotting without meaning”: naming a close-up without explaining the emotional intensity it creates.

  • Traps 2 — “Chronological description”: simply retelling the sequence of shots instead of grouping evidence by point.

  • Traps 3 — “Unsupported claims”: writing “the lighting is dark” but failing to identify the type of lighting or its source direction.

Fix these by using the PEAL structure: Point → Evidence → Analysis → Link to the question. For every single point you make, force yourself to include a specific micro-detail as evidence.

10. Section B Traps: The Case Studies | B

Section B requires two prepared case studies. The strongest students choose texts from different industries, e.g. one global film franchise and one local magazine brand, so they can contrast industrial practices.

  • Traps 1 — “Rote-learned paragraphs”: writing everything you memorised about the text, even if it is irrelevant to the question. Examiners read the question you answer, not the one you prepared for.

  • Traps 2 — “No comparison”: higher-mark questions explicitly require comparison between texts; answering about only one text caps you at roughly half the marks.

  • Traps 3 — “Vague industry facts”: saying “the company is global” without naming the parent conglomerate, the budget, or the distribution strategy.

Build a case study house style: one page per text with production, distribution, exchange, audience, and regulation data. Rehearse adapting these facts to at least ten past-paper questions.

11. Terminology: Precision over Volume |

WJEC examiners report that students frequently misuse or overuse terminology. A correct term with accurate application is worth far more than five fancy terms pasted randomly.

“Anchorage” used to mean “link” | “锚定”被当作”联系” Anchorage fixes one possible meaning of an image via text, e.g. a caption directs how we read a photo.
“Intertextuality” used to mean “influence” | “互文性”被当作”影响” Intertextuality is when a text deliberately references another text for audiences to recognise.
“Denotation” used to mean “what I think” | “外延”被当作”我的想法” Denotation is the literal, objective level of meaning; connotation is the cultural association.

Common mistake: writing “the denotation is danger.” Danger is a connotation, not a denotation. The denotation is a red liquid; the connotation is danger or blood. This distinction appears in the mark scheme every single session.

12. Revision and Exam Technique: Maximising Marks |

Timing determines your grade more than you think. The WJEC IGCSE Media paper is weighted toward the later extended response; rushing the final essay destroys your reward for solid early answers.

  • Plan before writing: spend 3 minutes bullet-pointing your argument. A planned answer is coherent and earns higher band position than an unplanned one of equal length.

  • Monitor your pace: if a 12-mark question should take about 14 minutes, check your watch after 10; adjust your depth accordingly.

  • Do not leave blanks: even a short paragraph with one correct technique and one effect secures marks that a blank cannot.

4-mark analysis 5 minutes Two developed points with evidence.
8-mark analysis 10 minutes Four points, each with technique + effect.
12-mark evaluation 14 minutes Structured argument with counterpoint.
20-mark extended response 25 minutes Introduction, 3-4 paragraphs, conclusion.

Finally, do not neglect past-paper question patterns. WJEC repeats question shapes: “How are technical codes used to create meaning?”, “How does the text represent [group]?”, “Evaluate the usefulness of [theory] for understanding this text.” Practise writing timed introductions for each pattern in the week before the exam.
