📚 Year 10 CAIE History: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | Year 10 CAIE
This is not a mathematics revision guide – history has its own formulas. Every essay you write in your CAIE IGCSE History exam (Year 10) depends on structured thinking: cause and effect, change and continuity, source evaluation, and argument construction. Think of these as historical ‘theorems’ that, once memorised, allow you to tackle any paper with confidence. This handbook turns the key historical concepts into reusable frameworks you can apply directly to core topics such as the Cold War, Germany 1918–45, and 20th-century international relations.
1. The Cause & Effect Theorem |
Every historical event has a web of causes, not a single one. Apply the PEEW formula: Political, Economic, Emotional/Ideological, and Wider context. For a question like ‘Why did the Cold War begin?’, list at least two causes in each category. Then always identify the trigger event – the spark that turned tension into open conflict.
Equally important is the Effect Equation: Immediate consequence + Longer-term result + Interpretation shift. For example, the Berlin Blockade (1948–49): immediate = Berlin Airlift; longer-term = NATO formation and division of Germany; interpretation = it proved the USA would contain communism actively.
2. The Source Reliability Formula |
When you answer a source-based question, stop guessing and apply the NOP method: Nature, Origin, Purpose. Nature: what type of source is it – a diary, a speech, a cartoon? Origin: who created it, when, and where? Purpose: why was it produced – to persuade, to justify, to entertain? Cross-reference these with your own knowledge (Context). Reliability = NOP + Context ÷ potential bias.
Remember the Corroboration Theorem: a source is more reliable if another independent source says the same thing, but less reliable if it contradicts the known facts. Always state both the value and the limitations – a biased source can still be useful as evidence of what one side believed.
3. The Change & Continuity Spectrum |
History is not just a list of dates – it is the study of what changed and what stayed the same. When asked ‘How far did life change under Nazi rule?’, draw an imaginary line: on the left, things that transformed completely; on the right, things that remained. For Germany 1933–39, women’s employment initially shifted but then reverted; terror became systematic, but many families tried to continue normal routines.
Use the RATE checklist: Reach (who was affected?), Amount (how deep was the change?), Timing (rapid or gradual?), Endurance (did it last?). For each paragraph, compare a ‘before’ and ‘after’ snapshot. This formula works equally well for Mao’s China or the New Deal USA.
4. The Argument Balance Equation |
A top-band essay always contains a thesis, an antithesis, and a synthesis. For ‘Was the Treaty of Versailles fair?’, your thesis might argue it was harsh and vengeful; your antithesis shows it could have been much worse (compare to Brest-Litovsk); your synthesis concludes that while it contained fairness elements like self-determination, the reparations and war guilt clause made it ultimately a ‘dictated peace’.
Never treat this as a 50/50 split. The equation is: Thesis (supported by 2–3 specific facts) + Antithesis (counter-argument with 1–2 facts) → weighted judgement. Explicitly state which side of the argument is stronger, and why, in your conclusion.
5. The Timeline Compression Theorem |
For Paper 1’s chronological questions, you must connect events, not just name them. Take the collapse of international peace in the 1930s: rearmament → remilitarisation of the Rhineland → Anschluss → Sudetenland → Munich Agreement → Prague → Nazi-Soviet Pact → Poland. Each step is linked by a consequence: Hitler gained confidence because no one stopped him.
The Compressed Revision Theorem: create a single diagram where each arrow is labelled with a reason. For Cold War crises, draw the Cuba timeline: Revolution → Bay of Pigs → Soviet missiles → US blockade → secret deal. The linkage words are your high-level analysis marks.
6. The Role of the Individual Formula |
Exam questions love ‘How far was X responsible for Y?’ Structure it with the GRILL model: Goals, Response to events, Ideology, Luck, Limitations of others. Apply to Stalin’s rise to power, Lenin’s role in the Bolshevik Revolution, or Gorbachev’s part in ending the Cold War. Always ask: would this have happened anyway without the individual?
The Great Man vs Structural Forces formula: measure individual impact against underlying trends. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. accelerated the civil rights movement, but the urbanisation of Black Americans and WWII experiences had created structural pressure. Grade the individual’s role as ‘crucial catalyst’ rather than sole cause.
7. The Source Usefulness Cross-Check |
Usefulness is not the same as reliability. Ask: What can this source tell us that others cannot? A Nazi propaganda poster is not reliable about reality, but it is extremely useful for showing Nazi ideals and methods of control. The formula: Usefulness = Relevance to the question + Insight into attitudes or conditions + Limitations of perspective.
When comparing two sources, always comment on how they agree or differ and what this tells you. Agreement between a West German textbook and a Soviet report on the Berlin Wall indicates the basic facts are indisputable; disagreement reveals deep ideological rifts. That is your top-level evaluation.
8. The Economic-Social-Political Triangulation |
Any major policy or event can be analysed through the ESP lens. For the New Economic Policy (NEP) in USSR: Economic = partial return of capitalism; Social = emergence of Nepmen and Kulaks, peasant discontent eased; Political = Bolsheviks retained power, but party purists condemned it. This structure ensures you never write a one-dimensional paragraph.
Apply to the ‘Roaring Twenties’ in USA: Economic boom based on mass production and credit; Social changes like flappers and the Great Migration; Political conservatism and Prohibition. Linking the three shows deep understanding. Always conclude with which factor was most significant – and why.
9. The Interpretation Clash Formula |
Historiography matters in CAIE. Even at Year 10, referencing different schools of thought lifts your answer. For the origins of the Cold War, the Orthodox view blames Stalin’s expansionism; the Revisionist view blames American capitalist imperialism; the Post-Revisionist view stresses mutual misunderstandings and security dilemmas. Use these as lenses, not as absolute truths.
Your formula: Mention the interpretation, give one specific piece of evidence that supports it, then contrast with another interpretation. Example: ‘While traditional historians argue that the Marshall Plan was a generous rescue package, revisionists see it as economic imperialism designed to create markets for US goods.’
10. The Memory Palace for Dates |
There are approximately 30 key dates you absolutely must know. Bundle them into clusters of three. Example: 1919 (Treaty of Versailles, Spartacist Uprising, Weimar Constitution) forms the ‘Birth of Weimar’ cluster. 1923 (Ruhr occupation, hyperinflation, Munich Putsch) is the ‘Year of Crisis’. Clusters turn isolated facts into a story.
Associate each cluster with a vivid mental image. For 1961: picture a wall being built, Yuri Gagarin floating in space, and Kennedy giving a speech – all in one absurdist painting. The more bizarre the image, the stronger the recall. This is not a memory trick; it is a neurological formula.
11. The PEEL Paragraph Construction Theorem | PEEL
Every paragraph must follow Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Point: a clear analytical statement. Evidence: precise factual detail (name, date, statistic). Explanation: ‘This meant that…’ or ‘As a result…’. Link: either back to the question or forward to the next paragraph. This is non-negotiable in CAIE marking rubrics.
Example: ‘The Berlin Blockade intensified Cold War divisions (Point). Stalin cut off all land routes to West Berlin in June 1948 (Evidence). This forced the West to organise the airlift, proving that the USA was committed to containment even at the risk of war (Explanation). Thus the crisis accelerated the formation of NATO (Link).’ Memorise this rhythm.
12. The Final Revision Loop |
Three days before the exam, run the 5-5-5 drill: 5 key topics, condensed onto 5 revision cards, reviewed 5 times throughout the day. The card for ‘League of Nations’ should contain its aims, membership gaps, successes in the 1920s, failures in the 1930s (Manchuria, Abyssinia), and a verdict in one sentence. Repeat for Cold War, Weimar Germany, Depth Study, and Treaty of Versailles.
Every formula in this handbook works only if you practise applying it to past papers. Sit with a timer, write under pressure, and mark your own work using the CAIE levels. Theorems without application are just statements; with application, they become grades.
