📚 Year 10 Cambridge Sociology: Formula & Theorem Quick-Reference | Year 10 Cambridge
Sociology does not have mathematical formulas like physics, but it does have theoretical ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’ — well-established principles that explain how societies work. This quick-reference handbook condenses the key theories, concepts and models from the Cambridge IGCSE Sociology syllabus into handy formulas, theorems and reference tables. Use it to revise and to connect ideas across topics such as family, education, crime and media.
1. Consensus vs Conflict Theories |
Consensus Theorem: Society functions as an integrated system where each part contributes to stability (Functionalism).
Functionalism, associated with Durkheim and Parsons, compares society to a living organism. Institutions such as the family, education and religion perform essential functions that maintain social order and value consensus. For example, the family provides primary socialisation, while education transmits shared norms and skills, ensuring society runs smoothly.
Conflict Theorem: Social order is maintained through the dominance of powerful groups over less powerful ones (Marxism, Feminism).
Marxist theory argues that society is structured by class conflict between the bourgeoisie (owners of production) and the proletariat (workers). The ruling class controls institutions such as the legal system and mass media to legitimise inequality. Similarly, feminist theories highlight gender-based conflict and patriarchy as a system of male dominance in both private and public spheres.
2. Social Action & Interaction |
Interaction Theorem: People create society through everyday interactions and shared meanings (Symbolic Interactionism).
Unlike structural theories, symbolic interactionism focuses on micro-level processes. George Herbert Mead argued that the self develops through social interaction and role-taking. Erving Goffman used the dramaturgical model: we present ourselves differently depending on the audience, managing impressions to shape how others see us. Meaning is constantly negotiated through symbols, language and gestures.
Labelling Theorem: Deviance is not inherent in an act but is created by the labels society attaches to it (Becker).
Howard Becker argued that no act is inherently deviant; it becomes deviant only when powerful groups successfully label it as such. Once labelled, individuals may accept the label and adopt a deviant career — a process called secondary deviance (Lemert). This theorem is vital for understanding crime, education (labelling by teachers) and media stereotyping.
3. Culture, Norms & Socialisation |
Culture Relativity Theorem: Norms and values vary across cultures and change over time; no culture is inherently superior.
Sociologists adopt cultural relativism — judging a culture by its own standards rather than by the standards of another. For instance, what counts as ‘normal’ family structure or gender role differs between societies and historical periods. Subcultures within a larger society may develop their own distinct norms and values, sometimes opposing mainstream culture (countercultures).
Socialisation Theorem: Individuals learn culture through primary and secondary socialisation, internalising the norms and values of their society.
Primary socialisation, mainly by the family, teaches basic language, norms and emotional bonds in early childhood. Secondary socialisation occurs through agencies such as schools, peer groups, media and religion, where individuals learn wider social roles. Successful socialisation leads to value consensus; poor socialisation is often linked to deviance.
4. Social Stratification & Inequality |
Weber’s Multidimensional Stratification Theorem: Class, status and party are three distinct, interacting dimensions of inequality.
Max Weber disagreed with Marx’s purely economic class model. He identified class (economic position based on market situation), status (social prestige and lifestyle) and party (political power) as separate sources of stratification. A person may have high status but low class, or vice versa. This model helps explain complex inequalities, such as those based on ethnicity or gender, which cannot be reduced to income alone.
Functionalist Stratification Theorem: Inequality is necessary to ensure that the most talented fill the most important roles (Davis & Moore).
Davis and Moore argued that social stratification is a universal functional necessity. Important positions requiring scarce talent or long training must offer higher rewards (pay, status) to motivate individuals. Critics point out that this theory justifies inequality and ignores barriers like discrimination and inherited wealth that prevent true meritocracy.
5. Measuring Social Class |
Occupational Classification Formula: Social class can be measured by the Registrar General’s Scale, based on occupation.
The Registrar General’s Scale groups occupations into a hierarchy of social classes, widely used in UK official statistics and sociological research.
|---|---|---|---|
| I Professional | I 专业 | Doctors, lawyers | 医生、律师 |
The more recent NS-SEC (National Statistics Socio-economic Classification) adds employment relations — whether a worker is an employer, self-employed or an employee — to refine the ‘formula’ and better capture contemporary class positions.
6. Poverty Lines: Absolute & Relative |
Absolute Poverty Formula: Income falls below the minimum level required to satisfy basic physical needs for survival.
Absolute poverty is measured by a fixed threshold, such as the World Bank’s international poverty line (e.g. $2.15 per day, 2017 PPP). It focuses on lack of food, clean water, shelter and health care. This measure is most useful for global comparisons and remains the basis for development goals.
Relative Poverty Formula: Household income below 60% of the median equivalised household income in a given society.
Relative poverty is defined in relation to the general living standards of a society. In the UK and EU, it is commonly calculated as below 60% of median household income after housing costs. Because the threshold rises as average incomes rise, relative poverty can exist even in wealthy societies and reflects social exclusion.
