1. Enterprise & Entrepreneurship |

An entrepreneur is a person who takes the risk of starting and running a business, organising the other three factors of production (land, labour, capital). The act of doing so is enterprise. Added value is the difference between the selling price and the cost of bought-in materials – it is not the same as profit, because other expenses still need to be deducted.

  • Enterprise: the ability to spot a business opportunity and take risks to set up a business.
  • Social enterprise: a business that trades with the primary aim of helping people or the environment, reinvesting most of its profits.
  • Crowdfunding: raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, usually via the internet.

2. Business Ownership & Liability |

A sole trader owns and runs the business alone, with unlimited liability – this means personal assets can be seized to pay business debts. In a partnership (2-20 owners), a deed of partnership outlines profit shares and responsibilities. Limited liability protects shareholders in a private limited company (Ltd), where shares cannot be sold to the public, and in a public limited company (plc), where shares are traded on the stock exchange.

  • Franchise: the right given by one business (franchisor) to another (franchisee) to sell goods or services using its name.
  • Stakeholder: anyone with an interest in the activities and success of a business (e.g. employees, suppliers, local community).

3. Marketing & The Marketing Mix |

Marketing is about identifying and satisfying customer needs profitably. The marketing mix (often the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place, Promotion) is the combination of factors a business controls to influence consumers. Market segmentation divides a market into distinct groups with similar characteristics, allowing targeted marketing. A unique selling point (USP) is a feature that differentiates a product from competitors.

  • Extension strategy: a method to prolong the life of a product in the maturity stage, e.g. new packaging, new flavour.
  • Penetration pricing: setting a low initial price to attract customers and build market share quickly.

4. Market Research & Data |

Market research is the collection and analysis of data to help a business make informed decisions. Primary research (field research) gathers first-hand data for a specific purpose (e.g. questionnaires, focus groups). Secondary research (desk research) uses already-published data (e.g. government reports, internet). Quantitative data is numerical; qualitative data is descriptive, exploring attitudes and feelings.

  • Sample: a subset of the target population chosen to represent the whole market.
  • Focus group: a small group of people brought together to discuss a product or service.

5. Finance & Key Financial Terms |

Revenue (or turnover) is the total income from sales before any costs are deducted (selling price × quantity sold). Fixed costs do not change with output (e.g. rent), while variable costs change directly with production (e.g. raw materials). Total costs = fixed costs + variable costs. Profit = total revenue – total costs. Break-even point is the level of output where total revenue equals total costs (neither profit nor loss).

Break-even formula: Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price per unit − Variable cost per unit)

  • Cash flow: the movement of money into and out of a business over a period of time.
  • Profit margin: profit expressed as a percentage of revenue. Gross profit margin = (Gross profit ÷ Revenue) × 100. Net profit margin = (Net profit ÷ Revenue) × 100.

6. Operations Management & Production |

Job production creates one-off, unique items (e.g. a wedding cake). Batch production makes a group of identical products before switching to another batch. Flow production (mass production) is continuous production of standardised products on an assembly line. Lean production aims to minimise waste while maintaining quality, often using techniques such as just-in-time (JIT) stock control.

  • Quality assurance: checking quality throughout the production process.
  • Quality control: inspecting finished products to detect defects.
  • Procurement: the process of buying goods and services, including selecting suppliers and negotiating contracts.

7. People & Human Resources |

Recruitment is the process of finding and hiring the right employees. Internal recruitment fills a vacancy with someone already in the business; external recruitment hires from outside. Induction is the training given to new employees to help them settle in. On-the-job training happens at the workplace; off-the-job training takes place away from the work area (e.g. courses). Labour turnover measures the rate at which employees leave a business over a period.

  • Motivation: the reason employees want to work hard and effectively for the business.
  • Financial motivators: pay, bonuses, commission, profit sharing. Non-financial motivators: job enrichment, recognition, empowerment.

8. External Influences & The Economy |

Businesses operate within an external environment they cannot control. PESTLE analysis examines Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental factors. Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level, eroding purchasing power. Interest rate is the cost of borrowing or the reward for saving – a rise increases business loan costs and reduces consumer spending. Exchange rate is the value of one currency against another; a weak pound makes exports cheaper and imports more expensive.

  • Unemployment rate: the percentage of the labour force that is willing and able to work but cannot find a job.
  • Consumer law: legislation that protects customers (e.g. goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose).
  • Competition policy: government rules to prevent anti-competitive practices and monopolies.

9. Globalisation & International Trade |

Globalisation refers to the growing integration of the world’s economies and cultures. It creates opportunities for businesses to export (sell abroad) or import (buy from abroad). A multinational company (MNC) operates in more than one country, gaining advantages like lower costs and wider markets. However, exchange rate fluctuations and tariffs (taxes on imports) can increase risk and expenses.

  • Trade bloc: a group of countries that agree to reduce or eliminate trade barriers between them, e.g. the EU.
  • Free trade: trade between countries without any barriers such as tariffs or quotas.

10. Business Ethics & Sustainability |

Ethics are the moral principles that guide how a business behaves. Acting ethically might mean paying fair wages, avoiding child labour or being transparent. Sustainability means meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs – in business this often involves reducing carbon footprint, using renewable energy and designing products that can be recycled. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the idea that businesses should voluntarily contribute to societal goals.

  • Fairtrade: a certification that guarantees producers in developing countries receive a fair price and decent working conditions.
  • Environmental impact: the effect a business’s activities have on the environment, e.g. pollution, resource depletion.

11. Business Planning & Growth |

A business plan is a written document describing the business, its objectives, strategies, market research and financial forecasts. It is used to secure finance and guide decision-making. Organic growth (internal growth) expands a business from within, e.g. opening new stores. Inorganic growth (external growth) occurs through mergers or takeovers. A merger is when two firms join to form a new company; a takeover is when one firm buys another.

  • Economies of scale: cost advantages gained when a business increases the scale of production, leading to lower unit costs.
  • Diseconomies of scale: increased unit costs when a business becomes too large and difficult to manage.

12. Quick-Memorisation Techniques for Edexcel Business Terms |

To memorise definitions, use acronym chains. For example, the marketing mix: ‘P²P²’ – Product, Price, Place, Promotion. For factors of production, remember ‘CELL’ – Capital, Enterprise, Land, Labour. Always link a term to a real-world brand: think of Tesla for ‘innovation’ or Lidl for ‘lean production’. Create flip cards with the term on one side and definition + example on the other. Practise writing full-sentence definitions under timed conditions – examiners want ‘precise meaning’, not vague phrases like ‘when a business does well’.

  • Chunking: group related terms, e.g. all financial ratios (gross profit margin, net profit margin, return on capital employed) in one revision session.
  • Command word drill: define = exact meaning; explain = give reasons; evaluate = weigh up pros and cons with a justified conclusion.
