Parent’s Guide to Year 11 Eduqas Media Studies |

📚 Parent’s Guide to Year 11 Eduqas Media Studies |

Media Studies can feel like a challenging subject for parents who studied more traditional subjects. However, with the right support, your child can excel. This guide explains the Eduqas GCSE Media Studies specification and offers practical ways for you to help at home.

1. Course Overview |

Eduqas GCSE Media Studies comprises three components. Component 1, ‘Exploring the Media’, is a 1 hour 30 minute written exam worth 40%. Component 2, ‘Understanding Media Forms and Products’, is another 1 hour 30 minute exam worth 30%. Component 3 is a non-exam assessment (NEA) where students create a media product in response to a set brief, also worth 30%.

Both exams test knowledge of set media texts as well as the ability to analyse unseen products using media terminology and theory. The NEA typically involves creating a production such as a film sequence, magazine cover or advertising campaign, accompanied by a statement of intent.

2. Why Media Studies Matters |

Media literacy is an essential skill in the digital age. Studying Media helps your child understand how messages are constructed, how audiences are targeted, and how media shapes society. It develops critical thinking, creativity and communication skills that are valuable in many careers, from journalism and marketing to film production and public relations.

Media Studies also complements other GCSE subjects like English Literature, History and Art, as it involves analysing texts, understanding context and creating original work.

3. Key Concept: Media Language |

Media Language refers to the codes and conventions used to create meaning in a media product. This includes visual elements such as camera angles, lighting, colour and mise-en-scène, as well as audio elements like dialogue, sound effects and music. In print media, layout, typography and image selection are key. Your child will learn to use technical terms like ‘close-up’, ‘low-key lighting’ and ‘serif font’ to analyse how a text communicates.

You can help by discussing the media you consume together. Ask questions like, ‘Why do you think the director chose that camera angle?’ or ‘What mood does this lighting create?’ This builds vocabulary and analytical habits.

4. Key Concept: Representation |

Representation examines how media portrays people, places, events and ideas. It involves selection and construction, meaning that media products offer a version of reality rather than a mirror. Students study stereotypes, under-representation and the way media can challenge or reinforce dominant ideologies. In the exam, they will analyse how gender, ethnicity, age, social class and other factors are represented in set texts and unseen material.

At home, you can encourage your child to question representations in news, adverts or social media. Ask ‘Who is being represented here?’, ‘What messages are being sent?’, and ‘Who is missing from this representation?’ This develops a critical eye.

5. Key Concept: Audience |

The audience concept looks at how media texts target, reach and shape groups of consumers. Students learn about demographic and psychographic profiling, the uses and gratifications theory (why audiences choose what they consume), and the impact of audience interaction. Eduqas also expects understanding of how new media technologies have fragmented audiences and changed consumption habits.

You can make audience theory tangible by discussing your family’s viewing habits. Why does someone choose Netflix over broadcast TV? What do they get out of scrolling through short videos? These everyday conversations reinforce key ideas.

6. Key Concept: Industry |

The industry context explores how media products are produced, distributed and regulated within economic and political frameworks. Students consider ownership models (e.g., conglomerates like Disney, public service broadcasters like the BBC), funding (advertising, subscriptions, license fees) and the role of regulators such as Ofcom. They also study how digital platforms have disrupted traditional business models.

Discuss real-world media industry news. For example, a newspaper’s decision to go behind a paywall or a streaming service acquiring a film studio. These examples help contextualise textbook theories.

7. Understanding the Exam Papers |

There are two exam papers. Component 1 focuses on exploring the media, with questions on advertising, magazines, newspapers, film posters and games. Students answer a mixture of short knowledge questions and longer analysis essays. Component 2 covers music video, radio, television and an online media product. Both papers require application of the theoretical framework (language, representation, audience, industry) and knowledge of social, cultural and historical contexts.

Each exam lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, so time management is crucial. Practise past papers under timed conditions, and teach your child to allocate marks-per-minute. For example, a 10-mark question should take about 12 minutes.

Examiners use assessment objectives (AOs): AO1 – knowledge and understanding, AO2 – analysis and evaluation, AO3 – creating media products (tested in NEA). Knowing these helps target revision.

8. Supporting the NEA (Non-Exam Assessment) |

The non-exam assessment (NEA) accounts for 30% of the final grade. Your child will receive a set brief from Eduqas and must produce an original media product, such as moving image, audio, print or interactive media. They also write a statement of intent explaining creative choices. The NEA is completed under school supervision but with limited guidance, so independent work is essential.

While you cannot create the product for them, you can provide resources (camera equipment, software access), help plan a production schedule and act as an audience to give feedback on drafts. Ask questions like ‘How does this linking shot create meaning?’ rather than providing direct solutions.

Encourage thorough research into real media examples of the same genre or form. A well-researched production is more likely to meet the mark scheme’s criteria for creativity and technical skill.

9. Effective Revision Strategies |

Media Studies requires both knowledge of products and the ability to apply theory. Create flashcards for key terminology, media theories (e.g., Todorov’s narrative theory, Mulvey’s male gaze) and details of set texts. Use mind maps to connect theoretical concepts across case studies. Practise analysing unseen texts: find an advert or movie poster and write a quick analysis
