📚 Year 10 CCEA Biology: Core Knowledge Essentials | CCEA Year 10 生物核心知识点梳理

This revision guide provides a comprehensive overview of the core topics covered in the Year 10 CCEA Biology course. Understanding these fundamental concepts is essential for success in GCSE Biology and for building a solid foundation for further study. We will explore the key areas, including cell biology, transport processes, enzymes, human body systems, plant physiology, and ecology.

1. Cell Structure and Function |

All living organisms are composed of cells, which are the basic units of life. There are two main categories of cells: prokaryotic (e.g., bacteria) and eukaryotic (e.g., plant and animal cells). Eukaryotic cells contain a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles, whereas prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and most membrane-bound organelles.

Typical animal and plant cells share common structures such as the cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, and ribosomes. However, plant cells also have a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole containing cell sap, and chloroplasts which are the sites of photosynthesis.

The nucleus controls cell activities and contains genetic material in the form of DNA. Mitochondria are the powerhouses where aerobic respiration takes place, releasing energy. Ribosomes are tiny structures involved in protein synthesis. The cell membrane is selectively permeable, controlling the movement of substances in and out of the cell.

2. Microscopy and Magnification |

Microscopes are essential tools for studying cells because most cells are far too small to be seen with the naked eye. Light microscopes use visible light and glass lenses to magnify specimens up to around ×1500, while electron microscopes use beams of electrons and can achieve much higher magnification and resolution, allowing detailed views of internal cell structures such as mitochondria and chloroplasts.

The total magnification of a light microscope is calculated by multiplying the eyepiece lens magnification by the objective lens magnification. For example, with a ×10 eyepiece and a ×40 objective, the total magnification is ×400. When measuring cells, the formula actual size = image size ÷ magnification is often used.

3. Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport |

Substances move into and out of cells by three main processes: diffusion, osmosis, and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process that does not require cellular energy. Examples include oxygen moving into blood from the alveoli and carbon dioxide diffusing out.

Osmosis is a special type of diffusion involving water molecules only. It is the
