📚 Year 11 AQA Media: Key Terminology Quick Revision Guide |

Media Studies can feel like learning a new language, but once you crack the code, every TV show, film poster or website starts to reveal its secrets. This guide breaks down the most important AQA GCSE Media terminology into bite-sized explanations with memory hacks, so you can recall them quickly in your exam and use them to impress the examiner with precise, analytical writing.

1. Media Language & Codes |

Media language refers to the visual, audio and written elements that media producers use to create meaning. Codes are the systems of signs that audiences learn to read – they can be technical (camera shots, editing), symbolic (clothing colour, body language) or written (captions, headlines). Think of media language as the vocabulary and grammar that make up a media ‘text’, and your job is to decode it.

Memory hack: use the acronym TSW – Technical, Symbolic, Written – to remember the three code types. Every time you analyse any media product, ask yourself: ‘What TSW codes are being used here and what do they communicate?’

2. Mise-en-scène & Visual Codes |

Mise-en-scène (pronounced ‘meez-on-sen’) is everything placed in front of the camera to create a scene: setting, props, costume, hair and makeup, lighting, colour and actors’ positioning and performance. Every detail is chosen deliberately by the director to convey character, mood or theme. For example, a character dressed in dark, messy clothes in a dimly-lit room suggests danger or depression, while bright colours and natural lighting can suggest happiness or innocence.

Revision trick: Draw a simple stick-figure frame and label five mise-en-scène elements: CLACS – Costume, Lighting, Actors (expression/position), Colour, Setting + Props. Then recall what each might mean in a crime drama vs a romantic comedy.

Cinematography covers all camera techniques: shot types (extreme close-up, close-up, mid-shot, long shot, establishing shot), camera angles (high angle, low angle, eye level, canted/dutch angle) and camera movement (pan, tilt, track, dolly, zoom, handheld). These choices guide the audience’s attention and shape their emotional response. A low angle shot, for instance, makes the subject look powerful or threatening, while a high angle shot can make them seem vulnerable.

Quick-memorise sentence: ‘ESCAPE’ for Shot types – Extreme close-up, Close-up, Mid-shot (often forgotten), Angle (high/low), Establishing, Pan/tilt. Link it to ‘escape the ordinary shot’ to jog your memory.

4. Editing & Transitions |

Editing is how the shots are put together to create pace, continuity or a specific meaning. Key terms include cut (instant change), fade to black, dissolve (one shot blends into another), wipe and jump cut (a jarring cut that breaks continuity). Editing also constructs ellipsis (skipping time) and parallel editing (crosscutting between two scenes happening at the same time). The rhythm of editing influences tension and excitement – rapid cuts often signal action, while long takes can build suspense.

Memory link: Think of editing as a DJ mixing tracks – a cut is a sudden drop, a dissolve is a smooth blend, and a jump cut is a scratch one might use for effect. This analogy helps you remember the feel of each transition.

5. Sound & Audio Codes |

Sound in media is divided into diegetic (sounds that come from the world of the film, like dialogue, footsteps, a car engine) and non-diegetic (sound added for the audience only, like a musical score, voiceover, or sound effect that characters cannot hear). Sound can also be on-screen or off-screen, synchronous (matched to action) or asynchronous. Sound bridges, ambient sound and dialogue all construct mood and realism. Pay close attention to what you hear, not just what you see.

Remember the pair ‘Diegetic = In-world, Non-diegetic = Only audience’. Picture a character walking down a street: the footsteps they hear are diegetic, while the sad violin music we hear is non-diegetic. The phrase ‘D.I.E’ – Diegetic Is Environment – can help.

6. Narrative & Storytelling |

Narrative refers to how a story is structured and told in a media text. Important theories include Todorov’s equilibrium (balance → disruption → recognition → repair → new equilibrium) and Propp’s character types (hero, villain, donor, helper, princess, dispatcher, false hero). You must also be able to identify linear vs non-linear narratives, open vs closed endings, and multi-strand narratives. Always ask: who tells the story and from whose perspective?

Todorov’s five stages can be recalled with the mnemonic ‘Every Day a New Repair’ – Equilibrium, Disruption, Acknowledgment, New equilibrium attempt, Repair (the resolution). Propp’s types can be grouped: just remember ‘hero, helper, hindered by villain, helped by donor/dispatcher’ from any fairy tale.

7. Genre & Conventions |

Genre is a category of media products that share similar codes and conventions, for instance, horror, sitcom, news bulletin, magazine cover. Conventions are the ‘rules’ we expect: in a horror film we expect jump scares, dark settings and suspenseful music; in a newspaper we expect headlines, bylines and a masthead. Genres evolve through repetition and variation; hybrid genres mix two or more. Producers use conventions to attract audiences, while audiences use them to choose what to watch.

Think ‘Recipe’ – a genre is like a recipe: you need certain ingredients (conventions) to make a cake (a successful genre product). If you change too many ingredients, the audience might reject it, but a small twist can create a fresh new dish. List genre ingredients for two different types and compare them.

8. Representation & Stereotypes |

Representation is how media portrays people, places, events and ideas – it is never simply a mirror of reality but a constructed version. Key areas include gender, ethnicity, age, social class and disability. Stereotypes are oversimplified, often repeated representations that can be positive or negative. Analysing representation involves looking at how characters are framed, what dialogue they are given and what narrative roles they play. Ask: whose story is being told, and who might be misrepresented or left out?

Use the mnemonic ‘RACE-G’ for Representation areas: Race/Age/Class/Ethnicity – Gender. Or simply think of a ‘who’s missing?’ check: for any text, make a quick list of who is present and who is absent, then consider what that absence might signify.

9. Audience & Reception |

Audience theory helps explain how different audiences respond to media. You must know the difference between mass and niche audiences, and how media products target specific demographics (age, gender, income). Key theories include Uses and Gratifications (Blumler and Katz: audiences use media for information, personal identity, integration & social interaction, entertainment) and Reception Theory (Stuart Hall: preferred, negotiated, oppositional readings). Always identify the intended target audience and how they might decode the text.

Recall the four Uses and Gratifications with ‘P.I.E.S’ – Personal identity, Information, Entertainment, Social interaction. For Hall’s three readings, imagine a film with a political message: a supporter gives a preferred reading, a moderate gives a negotiated reading, and a opponent gives an oppositional reading.

10. Institution & Regulation |

Media institutions are the organisations that create and distribute media products, such as the BBC, Disney, News Corp or a magazine publisher. You need to understand concepts like public service broadcasting (funded by licence fee, must inform, educate and entertain), commercial broadcasting (funded by advertising) and how ownership can influence content. Regulation refers to bodies like Ofcom (TV, radio) and IPSO (press) that set rules to protect audiences from harm, ensure accuracy and maintain standards.

A simple breakdown: Public = for the public, paid by public (BBC); Commercial = for profit, paid by ads (ITV). For regulators, remember ‘Ofcom watches what you watch; IPSO checks what you read.’ Connect the acronyms: Ofcom = Office of communications, IPSO = Independent Press Standards Organisation.

11. Semiotics & Sign Systems |

Semiotics is the study of signs and how they create meaning. A sign consists of the signifier (the form, such as a word, image or sound) and the signified (the mental concept it triggers). For instance, an image of a red rose is the signifier; its signified might be love, romance or passion, depending on context. Index, icon and symbol are three types of signs: an index has a direct link (smoke = fire), an icon resembles what it represents (a photograph), and a symbol is arbitrary (a flag).

Memory trick: ‘I see a snake, I think danger.’ The snake image is an icon (resembles a snake), the thought of danger is the signified. The smoke-index link is easiest: ‘You see smoke, you know there’s fire.’ For symbol, think of a heart shape – it doesn’t look like a real heart but we all know it means love.

12. Intertextuality & Postmodern References |

Intertextuality occurs when one media text references another, whether through parody, homage, quotation or stylistic imitation. It relies on the audience’s existing knowledge of other media to create meaning or humour. For example, a film might visual reference a famous painting, a TV show might mimic the opening of another series, or a character might wear a costume reminiscent of a well-known superhero. Recognising intertextuality shows deeper analysis and cultural awareness.

Think of it as an ‘easter egg’ for media students. Whenever you spot a reference, note it as intertextuality and explain what extra layer of meaning it adds. A quick check: if you shout ‘Hey, that’s just like in [X]!’, you’ve probably found an intertextual moment.
