Year 11 AQA Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework & Model Essays | AQA

📚 Year 11 AQA Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework & Model Essays | AQA

Writing philosophy essays is not just about what you know – it is about how you argue. The AQA GCSE Philosophy exam rewards clear structure, accurate use of terminology, and balanced evaluation. This guide breaks down the two main essay types you will face, provides step-by-step frameworks, and offers full model answers to help you boost your marks from a pass to a top grade.

1. Understanding the AQA Philosophy Assessment | 理解 AQA 哲学考核方式

The AQA GCSE Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics) paper includes two types of essay questions: 9-mark ‘Explain’ questions and 12-mark ‘Evaluate’ questions. The 9-mark question tests your knowledge and understanding of beliefs and teachings. The 12-mark question requires you to present a reasoned argument, consider alternative views, and reach a justified conclusion.

AQA GCSE

Both questions are marked for spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG), so clear written expression is essential. The examiner expects you to use philosophical vocabulary correctly and to structure your answer in paragraphs, not bullet points.

2. The 9-Mark ‘Explain’ Framework | 9

A 9-mark question typically begins with ‘Explain two…’. You need to give two distinct reasons, teachings or ways, developing each fully. The best answers link ideas to sources of authority and show how they influence believers today.

Framework:
Paragraph 1 – State the first reason/teaching clearly. Explain its meaning in detail. Support it with a religious quote or reference (e.g. Bible verse, Church teaching). Show how this applies to a believer’s life or a moral issue.
Paragraph 2 – State the second reason/teaching. Use a connective such as ‘Furthermore’ or ‘In addition’. Follow the same development pattern. Conclude briefly by linking both points together if possible.

3. Worked Example: 9-Mark Question on Life After Death | 9

Question: Explain two Christian beliefs about life after death. (9 marks)

Model paragraph 1:
One Christian belief is that there is a resurrection of the body. Christians believe that after death, the soul will be reunited with a glorified, spiritual body at the end of time. This is shown in 1 Corinthians 15:42-44, which says the body is ‘sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body’. This belief gives Christians hope that death is not the end and encourages them to live morally because their actions affect their resurrection destiny.

Model paragraph 2:
A second Christian belief is in judgement. Christians hold that after death, each person will be judged by God based on their faith and actions. Matthew 25:31-46 describes the separation of the ‘sheep’ from the ‘goats’, with the righteous inheriting eternal life. This belief influences Christians to serve others, as they see Christ in the hungry and the prisoner. It also provides comfort that God’s justice will ultimately prevail.

4. The 12-Mark ‘Evaluate’ Framework | 12

The 12-mark question requires you to ‘Evaluate’ a statement. You must present arguments for and against, including religious views, and reach a conclusion that weighs up the evidence. Simply describing beliefs is not enough – you must analyse and judge.

Framework:
Introduction – Briefly define key terms and signpost the debate.
Paragraph 1 – Give a strong argument in favour of the statement, with religious teaching and reasoning.
Paragraph 2 – Give a second argument in favour, or develop a different angle.
Paragraph 3 – Present a counter-argument against the statement, again with religious sources.
Paragraph 4 – Present a further counter-argument, perhaps from a different perspective (e.g. a different religion or philosophical view).
Conclusion – Weigh the arguments and state your own justified view. Explain why one side is stronger, but acknowledge complexity.

5. Model 12-Mark Essay: The Cosmological Argument | 12

Statement: ‘The cosmological argument proves that God exists.’ Evaluate this statement. (12 marks)

Introduction:
The cosmological argument claims that everything that exists has a cause, and this chain of causation must lead back to a first cause, which is God. While the argument appears logically simple, its success in proving God’s existence is highly debatable.

Paragraph 1 – For the statement:
Aquinas’ version of the argument says that we observe cause and effect in the world. Nothing can cause itself, so there must be an uncaused first cause – God. This is supported by reason: an infinite regress of causes is impossible, because without a first cause there would be no subsequent causes. Genesis 1:1 also presents God as the creator of the universe, consistent with the idea of a first cause. Therefore, the argument gives a rational basis for belief in God without relying on faith alone.

Paragraph 2 – Further support:
Modern science gives the Big Bang theory as the beginning of the universe. The cosmological argument can point to this as evidence that the universe had a beginning, which implies a cause outside time and space. This cause must be powerful and non-material, attributes which theists ascribe to God. The argument does not prove the God of Christianity specifically, but it establishes a necessary being, which makes religious belief reasonable.

Paragraph 3 – Against the statement:
However, critics such as Hume argue that just because everything in the universe has a cause does not mean the universe as a whole needs a cause. The fallacy of composition occurs when we assume what is true of the parts is true of the whole. Furthermore, even if a first cause exists, it is a leap to call it ‘God’ with all the personal qualities of the divine. The first cause could be an impersonal force or a previous universe cycle.

Paragraph 4 – Further counter-argument:
Atheist philosophers like Russell simply accept that the universe exists as a brute fact. There is no logical necessity to posit a first cause; the universe could be eternal. Quantum physics also suggests events at the subatomic level can occur without a clear cause, challenging the premise that everything must have a cause. Thus the cosmological argument faces serious philosophical and scientific objections.

Conclusion:
In my view, the cosmological argument does not conclusively prove God’s existence. While it raises a profound question about why there is something rather than nothing, it cannot rule out alternative explanations. However, it remains a valuable rational starting point for faith, showing that belief in God is not contrary to reason but beyond its limits.

6. Using Philosophical Vocabulary Correctly |

Top-grade answers are distinguished by precise terminology. For instance, use ‘a posteriori’ and ‘a priori’ rather than ‘based on experience’ or ‘without experience’. Refer to ‘inductive’ and ‘deductive’ arguments, ‘contingent’ and ‘necessary’ existence, ‘omnipotent’, ‘omniscient’ and ‘omnibenevolent’ attributes. However, never use a term you cannot explain – the examiner rewards understanding, not empty jargon.

Create a glossary as you revise. Practice embedding terms into sentences. For example: ‘The teleological argument is an a posteriori, inductive argument that observes order and purpose in the world to infer a designer.’ This shows both vocabulary and comprehension in one line.

7. Developing Coherent Arguments and Counter-Arguments |

A philosophy essay is a conversation between different viewpoints. Use connectives like ‘On the one hand’, ‘Conversely’, ‘Moreover’, ‘In contrast’ to signal the flow of the debate. Always give a reason for a view, not just a statement of belief.

When presenting a counter-argument, do not dismiss it casually. Explain why some people find it persuasive, then evaluate its strength. A good evaluative phrase is: ‘This argument is compelling because… however, it is limited by…’ or ‘While this view has merit, it fails to account for…’ This demonstrates critical engagement.

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Mistake 1: Retelling the argument without analysis. The examiner knows the design argument; they want you to evaluate it. Avoid long descriptions.
Mistake 2: Ignoring SPaG. Poor grammar and spelling create a negative impression and lose you up to 3 marks per essay.
Mistake 3: One-sided evaluation. Even if you strongly agree, you must include and assess alternative views.
Mistake 4: Unsupported assertions. Never claim ‘Christians believe X’ without citing a source like the Bible, the Catechism or a named theologian.
Mistake 5: Weak conclusions that simply restate the introduction. A conclusion should offer a judgement based on the weight of arguments presented.

9. Model 12-Mark Essay: The Problem of Evil | 12

Statement: ‘The existence of evil proves that God does not exist.’ Evaluate this statement. (12 marks)

Introduction:
The problem of evil questions how a loving and all-powerful God can permit suffering. It is often seen as the strongest argument against God’s existence. This essay will weigh the logical and evidential problems of evil against theodicies that seek to defend God.

Paragraph 1 – For the statement (logical problem):
The logical problem of evil, set out by Epicurus, says that if God is all-powerful he could remove evil; if all-loving he would want to. Yet evil exists. Therefore, such a God is incompatible with reality. This is a deductive argument: if the premises are true, the conclusion follows with certainty. It seems to force the believer to either give up God’s omnipotence or benevolence.

Paragraph 2 – Further support (evidential problem):
The evidential problem points to the sheer amount and distribution of pointless suffering – children dying of cancer, natural disasters killing thousands. It seems implausible that a good God would design a world with such gratuitous evil. Even if some suffering is necessary for character-building, the scale and intensity of evil seem disproportionate, making the non-existence of God more probable.

Paragraph 3 – Against the statement (Augustinian theodicy):
Augustine’s theodicy argues that evil is not a substance created by God but a privation of good, like a wound is an absence of health. Evil came into the world through human free will when Adam and Eve sinned. God is just to allow the consequences because he respects our freedom. The cross of Christ also shows that God is willing to suffer with us and ultimately redeem creation, so evil is not pointless.

Paragraph 4 – Further counter (Irenaean theodicy):
Irenaeus and later Hick propose a soul-making theodicy: suffering is necessary for us to develop virtues like courage and compassion. A ‘perfect’ world with no hardship would produce shallow people. God permits evil as a means for spiritual growth towards a future perfection. This theodicy takes the evolutionary scale of suffering seriously and offers hope that all suffering will be made right in the afterlife.

Conclusion:
While the problem of evil presents a powerful challenge, I do not think it conclusively disproves God. The logical problem is weakened by the free will defence, and the evidential problem remains a mystery but not a contradiction if one accepts the possibility of an afterlife. Therefore, evil makes belief difficult but not irrational; faith involves trust that God has good reasons for allowing suffering, even if we do not fully comprehend them.

10. Timing and Planning for Exam Success |

In the AQA exam, you have roughly 25 minutes for a 12-mark question and 18 minutes for a 9-mark question. Spend 3-5 minutes planning before writing. Jot down key arguments, sources and a conclusion direction. A clear plan prevents you from going off topic and ensures balanced coverage of both sides.

Question Type Marks Time (approx.) Structure
Explain 9 18 min 2 developed reasons + sources
Evaluate 12 25 min Intro, 2 for, 2 against, conclusion

Practise under timed conditions using past papers. Mark your own work or swap with a friend using the AQA mark scheme. Focus on the quality of your arguments, not the quantity of paragraphs – four well-developed paragraphs with evaluation will score higher than six superficial ones.

11. Final Checklist Before the Exam |

Before the exam, ensure you can do all of the following:
Define key terms like omniscient, contingent, a posteriori, theodicy, sanctity of life.
Give at least two religious teachings with quotes for each major topic (e.g. abortion, design argument, problem of evil).
Construct a balanced 12-mark plan in under 4 minutes.
Identify and avoid the fallacy of composition and other common philosophical errors.
Write a clear conclusion that evaluates which side is stronger and why.
