1. The Skeletal System |

The skeleton provides shape, support, protection, movement, blood cell production and mineral storage. Key bones include the cranium, clavicle, sternum, ribs, vertebrae, pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius and ulna.

Long bones act as levers to produce movement when muscles contract. Flat bones protect vital organs, while short bones provide stability and weight-bearing support.

Bone growth and density are influenced by exercise, calcium intake and hormones. Weight-bearing activities strengthen bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis later in life.

2. The Muscular System |

Muscles work by contracting and pulling on bones across joints. Voluntary muscles, also called skeletal muscles, are under conscious control. Key muscles for CCEA PE include: deltoid, biceps, triceps, pectorals, abdominals, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals, gastrocnemius, latissimus dorsi and trapezius.

Muscles are arranged in antagonistic pairs. For example, when the biceps contracts to flex the elbow, the triceps relaxes. This coordinated action allows smooth, controlled movement at joints.

Isotonic contractions involve movement at a joint – concentric (muscle shortens) and eccentric (muscle lengthens under tension). Isometric contractions produce tension without movement, such as holding a plank position.

3. Joints and Movement |

A joint is where two or more bones meet. Synovial joints are freely movable and most relevant in sport. Types include ball-and-socket (hip, shoulder) and hinge joints (knee, elbow). Synovial joints contain cartilage to absorb shock, synovial fluid to lubricate, ligaments to connect bone to bone, and tendons to attach muscle to bone.

Movement terms you must learn: flexion (bending a limb), extension (straightening), abduction (moving away from the midline), adduction (moving towards the midline), rotation, circumduction, plantarflexion (pointing toes down) and dorsiflexion (lifting toes up).

Joint stability and range of motion are affected by the shape of bones, ligament tightness and muscle tone. Regular flexibility training can improve the range of movement and lower injury risk.

4. The Cardiovascular System |

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. Its roles include transporting oxygen, nutrients and hormones to cells, removing waste products such as carbon dioxide, and regulating body temperature.

The heart has four chambers: left and right atria (upper) and left and right ventricles (lower). The left ventricle has the thickest wall because it pumps oxygenated blood around the whole body (systemic circuit). The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circuit).

Key measures are heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV) and cardiac output (Q). Cardiac output is the volume of blood pumped out of the heart per minute.

Cardiac Output = Stroke Volume x Heart Rate (Q = SV x HR)

5. The Respiratory System |

The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide. Air travels through the nose/mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and finally the alveoli in the lungs where gas exchange occurs by diffusion.

During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, and the intercostal muscles lift the rib cage up and out. This increases chest volume and decreases pressure, drawing air in. Exhalation at rest is largely passive, with muscles relaxing.

Key lung volumes include tidal volume (air per normal breath), vital capacity (maximum air expelled after a full breath in) and minute ventilation (volume of air moved per minute).

Minute Ventilation = Tidal Volume x Breathing Rate

6. Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercise |

Aerobic exercise uses oxygen to break down glucose for energy. It occurs during lower-intensity, longer-duration activities such as jogging, cycling or long-distance swimming. The equation is:

Glucose + Oxygen → Energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water

Anaerobic exercise does not require oxygen. It provides energy quickly for high-intensity, short-burst activities such as sprinting or weightlifting. The glucose breakdown produces lactic acid, which can cause muscular fatigue and discomfort.

The body uses the creatine phosphate system for very short bursts (up to 10 seconds), anaerobic glycolysis for high-intensity efforts (up to approximately 60-90 seconds), and the aerobic system for longer durations. Understanding these energy pathways helps design effective training programmes.

7. Components of Health and Fitness |

Health-related components include cardiovascular endurance (ability of heart and lungs to supply oxygen), muscular endurance (repeated contractions without fatigue), muscular strength (maximum force a muscle can exert), flexibility (range of motion around a joint) and body composition (proportion of fat, muscle and bone).

Skill-related components are agility (change direction quickly), balance (maintain centre of mass), coordination (use senses with body parts), power (strength x speed), reaction time (respond to a stimulus) and speed (move body parts quickly).

Fitness testing for each component helps identify strengths and weaknesses. For example, the multi-stage fitness test measures cardiovascular endurance, and the sit-and-reach test measures flexibility.

8. Principles of Training |

To improve fitness, training must follow key principles represented by SPORT: Specificity (training relevant to your sport), Progression (gradually increasing the challenge), Overload (working beyond the normal level), Reversibility (use it or lose it) and Tedium (avoiding boredom by varying training).

The FITT principle is applied to achieve overload: Frequency (how often), Intensity (how hard), Time (how long), Type (mode of exercise). For example, to increase cardiovascular endurance, you might run 4 times a week at 70% maximum heart rate for 30 minutes.

Maximum heart rate can be estimated as:

Maximum Heart Rate = 220 – Age (in years)

Rest, recovery and adaptation are equally important. The body repairs and strengthens during rest periods, so overtraining without sufficient recovery can lead to injury and performance decline.

9. Methods of Training |

Continuous training involves steady, moderate-intensity exercise without rest, improving cardiovascular endurance – e.g. a 40-minute run. Interval training alternates periods of high-intensity work with low-intensity recovery, developing both aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

Fartlek training (‘speed play’) mixes steady running with bursts of speed, often over varied terrain. Circuit training includes a series of exercise stations targeting different muscle groups or fitness components.

Weight training uses resistance to develop muscular strength or endurance. Plyometric training involves explosive movements like jumping and bounding to develop power. Flexibility training (static, dynamic, PNF) improves range of motion and reduces injury risk.

10. Warm-up and Cool-down | 热身与整理活动

A warm-up prepares the body for exercise. It gradually increases heart rate, breathing rate and blood flow to muscles, raises muscle temperature for better elasticity, and enhances psychological readiness. A typical warm-up has three phases: pulse raiser (light jogging), stretching (dynamic stretches) and sport-specific drills.

A cool-down returns the body to its resting state gradually. It helps remove waste products like lactic acid, reduces stiffness and soreness, and prevents blood pooling. A cool-down includes low-intensity exercise (light jogging or walking) and static stretching of main muscle groups.

11. Nutrition and Hydration |

A balanced diet provides the energy and nutrients required for performance and health. Macronutrients are carbohydrates (main energy source, stored as glycogen), proteins (muscle repair and growth) and fats (slow energy source and insulation).

Micronutrients – vitamins and minerals – are needed in smaller amounts but are vital. For example, calcium and vitamin D support bone health; iron is essential for oxygen transport in haemoglobin.

Hydration is critical, as water regulates body temperature and transports nutrients. Dehydration leads to decreased performance, early fatigue and impaired concentration. Athletes should drink before, during and after exercise. For prolonged intense activity, isotonic sports drinks can replenish electrolytes.

12. Drugs and Performance |

Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) are forbidden in sport because they create unfair advantage and pose serious health risks. Anabolic steroids increase muscle mass and strength but can cause heart problems, liver damage and aggression. Stimulants boost alertness but can raise heart rate dangerously.

Beta blockers slow heart rate and reduce tremors, used in sports like archery, but can cause breathing difficulties and depression. Diuretics remove fluid to achieve rapid weight loss or mask other drugs, risking severe dehydration. Narcotic analgesics mask pain, allowing injured athletes to continue, which can worsen injuries.

Blood doping and erythropoietin (EPO) increase red blood cell count to improve oxygen delivery, but they thicken the blood and raise the risk of stroke or heart attack. Understanding the consequences helps students appreciate why clean sport matters.
