Knowledge is standardly analysed as Justified True Belief (JTB). A subject S knows that proposition p if and only if: (i) p is true; (ii) S believes that p; (iii) S’s belief that p is justified. In symbolic form: Kₛp ↔ (p ∧ Bₛp ∧ Jₛp).

Locke’s formula separates qualities into primary (solidity, extension, figure, motion, number) and secondary (colour, sound, taste, etc.), where primary qualities resemble the object and secondary qualities are powers to produce ideas in us.

Gaunilo’s parody uses the same form for a perfect island, challenging whether existence is a genuine predicate.

Aquinas’ formula for cosmological argument: Everything in motion is moved by another. An infinite regress of movers is impossible. Therefore, there must exist a first unmoved mover — God. Motion here means change from potentiality to actuality.

If God is willing and able to prevent evil, evil would not exist. Yet it does, so at least one of these propositions must be false. Theism seems committed to all three, generating a contradiction.

Classical act utilitarianism runs on the Greatest Happiness Principle: an action is right insofar as it tends to maximise overall happiness, defined as pleasure minus pain. For any set of available actions {A₁, A₂, …}, the morally obligatory action is that which yields max Σ (pleasure − pain) across all sentient beings affected.

The first formulation states: Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. In decision‑checking form: (1) State your maxim. (2) Universalise it as a law of nature. (3) Test whether the maxim can be conceived without contradiction and can be willed without contradiction.

Virtuous character is achieved by hitting the mean between excess and deficiency relative to us, determined by practical reason (phronesis). The formula is not arithmetic but contextual: for any action‑emotion, there is a vice of excess and a vice of deficiency, with virtue lying at the appropriate intermediate.
