Plant cells have additional features: chloroplasts absorb light for photosynthesis, a large permanent vacuole stores cell sap, and a rigid cell wall made of cellulose provides support.

Remember ‘Diffusion = Downhill’, ‘Osmosis = Only Water’, ‘Active = Against + ATP’.

Egestion is the removal of undigested waste as faeces. Do not confuse egestion with excretion.

The heart has four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle. Remember ‘right pumps to lungs, left pumps to body’. Arteries carry blood away from the heart at high pressure; veins return blood at low pressure; capillaries are thin-walled for exchange. Valves prevent backflow.

Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which binds oxygen. ‘Haem’ = blood, ‘globin’ = protein. Oxyhaemoglobin is formed in lungs.

White blood cells fight infection; lymphocytes produce antibodies, phagocytes engulf pathogens. ‘Phago’ = eat, ‘cyte’ = cell – eating cell.

A neurone is a nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses. The reflex arc is the pathway taken by an impulse to produce a rapid automatic response, bypassing the conscious brain. The synapse is a junction between neurones where transmitter chemicals diffuse across.

Synapse: the gap is very small; remember ‘Synapse = Send Across a Gap’.

Accommodation is the ability of the eye to focus on near and distant objects by changing the shape of the lens. ‘Ciliary muscle contracts for near objects – think ‘squeezing to see near’.

Homozygous means having two identical alleles; heterozygous means having two different alleles.

Mutation is a random change in DNA sequence. It is the source of new alleles and may be neutral, harmful, or beneficial.

Decomposers break down dead matter, recycling nutrients. ‘Decompose = break apart’. Bacteria and fungi are key decomposers.
