1. Understanding the CAIE IGCSE PE Syllabus (0413) | 理解CAIE IGCSE体育教学大纲

The CAIE IGCSE Physical Education course combines theoretical knowledge with practical performance. It is assessed through two components: Paper 1 (Theory), worth 50% of the total marks, and Component 2 (Coursework), which evaluates your practical skills across four activities and includes a written analysis of performance. The theory paper covers anatomy and physiology, health and fitness, skill acquisition, psychology, and social, cultural and ethical influences. Familiarising yourself with the syllabus topics now will help you see the links between classroom learning and your own sport.

CAIE IGCSE

2. Anatomy and Physiology Recap: Skeletal and Muscular Systems |

The skeletal system provides support, protection, movement, mineral storage and blood cell production. Key bones to recall include the cranium, clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, vertebrae, pelvis, femur, patella, tibia and fibula. Joints are classified as fibrous, cartilaginous or synovial, with most sporting movements occurring at freely movable synovial joints such as the hinge joint (elbow/knee) and ball-and-socket joint (shoulder/hip). Understanding joint actions like flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, circumduction and lateral flexion is essential for movement analysis.

Skeletal muscles work in antagonistic pairs to produce coordinated movement. Agonist muscles contract while antagonists relax. For example, during a bicep curl, the biceps brachii is the agonist and the triceps brachii is the antagonist. Muscular contractions can be isotonic (concentric and eccentric) or isometric. Concentric contractions shorten the muscle under tension, eccentric contractions lengthen it, and isometric contractions produce force without changing muscle length.

3. Respiratory and Circulatory Systems in Exercise |

During exercise, the respiratory system increases tidal volume, breathing rate and minute ventilation to supply more oxygen to working muscles. Gaseous exchange occurs in the alveoli, where oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out. Regular training leads to long-term adaptations such as stronger respiratory muscles, improved vital capacity and more efficient oxygen uptake.

The circulatory system responds acutely to exercise by increasing heart rate, stroke volume and cardiac output. Blood is redistributed away from non-essential organs towards active skeletal muscles through vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Key long-term adaptations include cardiac hypertrophy, increased resting stroke volume, lower resting heart rate and improved venous return. Understanding these changes is fundamental for questions on the immediate and chronic effects of exercise.

4. Energy Systems and Movement Analysis |

Energy for muscular contraction is provided by adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Three energy systems resynthesise ATP at different rates and capacities depending on the intensity and duration of exercise. The ATP-PC system provides immediate energy for high-intensity efforts lasting up to 10 seconds. The lactic acid system (anaerobic glycolysis) fuels activities of 10 to 90 seconds, producing lactic acid as a by-product. The aerobic system uses oxygen to break down carbohydrates and fats, sustaining prolonged, lower-intensity exercise. Being able to identify the dominant energy system in sporting examples is a common exam requirement.

Energy System Duration Fuel By-products Sport Example
ATP-PC 0–10 s Phosphocreatine Pi 100 m sprint
Lactic acid 10–90 s Glucose Lactic acid 400 m run
Aerobic 90 s + Glucose / Fats CO₂, H₂O Marathon

Movement analysis also requires you to apply lever systems. First-class, second-class and third-class levers each have unique arrangements of fulcrum, load and effort, and a mechanical advantage or disadvantage. Most skeletal muscles act as third-class levers, giving priority to speed and range of motion rather than force production.

5. Health, Fitness and Well-being | 健康、体能与幸福感

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease. Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment and is composed of health-related components (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, body composition) and skill-related components (agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, speed). Understanding the difference between health and fitness will help you plan appropriate training programmes and answer high-mark questions effectively.

6. Principles of Training and Methods of Training |

Training principles are essential for designing an effective programme. The SPORT principles (Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility, Tedium) and the FITT principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) provide a framework for structuring sessions. Overload can be achieved by manipulating FITT variables. Reversibility reminds us that fitness levels decline when training stops. Applying these principles in context shows the examiner you can move beyond simple recall.

Common methods of training include continuous training, fartlek, interval training, circuit training, weight training, plyometrics and flexibility training. Each method targets different fitness components and energy systems. For instance, interval training is highly effective for improving speed and anaerobic capacity, while continuous training develops aerobic endurance. Being able to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each method for a specific athlete is a key skill in the Paper 1 section on training.

7. Skill Acquisition and Psychology of Sport |

Skills can be classified on continua such as open–closed, gross–fine, self-paced–externally paced and discrete–serial–continuous. A tennis serve in a match is an open, gross skill, whereas a dart throw is a closed, fine skill. Understanding skill classification helps coaches select appropriate practice types and feedback methods.

Guidance and feedback are central to learning. Visual, verbal, manual and mechanical guidance can be used at different stages of learning. Feedback can be intrinsic, extrinsic, knowledge of results, knowledge of performance, positive, negative, concurrent or terminal. The most effective teachers and coaches combine types of feedback depending on the learner’s needs and the context.

In sport psychology, arousal, anxiety and motivation influence performance. The inverted-U theory suggests performance improves with arousal up to an optimal point, after which it declines. Goal setting (SMART targets) and mental rehearsal can help athletes manage anxiety and maintain focus. These concepts are regularly assessed through scenario-based questions.

8. Social, Cultural and Ethical Influences |

Participation in physical activity is shaped by a range of social and cultural factors including age, gender, ethnicity, family, peer groups, socioeconomic status and media coverage. Initiatives such as ‘This Girl Can’ campaign aim to reduce barriers and increase participation among underrepresented groups. The syllabus also requires you to explore the role of schools, clubs and leisure centres in promoting sport.

Ethical issues include sportsmanship, gamesmanship, deviance and the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Sportsmanship aligns with playing fairly and showing respect, while gamesmanship involves bending the rules without necessarily breaking them. Understanding the consequences of drug use (e.g. anabolic steroids, beta blockers, EPO) for health and for the integrity of sport is essential. Sponsorship, media and commercialisation can bring both positive and negative influences on performers, officials and spectators.

9. Nutrition and Hydration for Performance |

A balanced diet supplies the macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) needed for energy production, growth and repair. Carbohydrates are the preferred fuel for high-intensity exercise; proteins support muscle repair; fats provide sustained energy. Fibre and water are also crucial for digestion and temperature regulation. Carbohydrate loading, for example, is a strategy used by endurance athletes to maximise glycogen stores before an event.

Hydration significantly affects performance. Even a small loss of body water (as little as 2% of body mass) can impair cognitive function, increase perceived exertion and reduce endurance capacity. Athletes must learn to hydrate before, during and after exercise, and to recognise the role of electrolytes in maintaining fluid balance. Sports drinks can be beneficial during prolonged, high-intensity activities.

10. Practical Performance and Analysis |

Component 2 requires you to demonstrate skills in four different physical activities from at least two of the recognised categories (e.g. games, athletic activities, outdoor and adventurous activities). Over the summer, it is wise to maintain a training log, record video footage of your performances and begin your written analysis. Choose one of your strongest activities for the analysis task, and start noting strengths, areas for improvement and how you would apply training principles to enhance performance.

11. Exam Technique and Command Words |

IGCSE PE theory papers use specific command words that tell you exactly what the examiner expects. ‘State’ requires a short answer or one-word response. ‘Describe’ asks you to give an account of characteristics or features. ‘Explain’ means giving reasons or mechanisms. ‘Evaluate’ requires a balanced judgement using evidence. Practising with past papers and mark schemes will train you to recognise what a full-mark answer looks like for each command word.

12. Creating a Summer Study Plan |

A well-structured summer revision schedule reduces the pressure of Year 11. Aim for short, focused study sessions of 35–45 minutes, each covering a specific topic. Use mind maps for anatomy, flashcards for definitions and video analysis to link theory to your own sport. Set a weekly target, such as mastering the three energy systems or writing a practice answer on the SPORT principles, and reward yourself with active recovery – perhaps a game of football or a swim, which simultaneously keeps your practical skills sharp.
