1. Materials and Properties |

Material properties dictate how a substance behaves under load, heat or chemical attack. Remembering these terms helps you choose the right material for any design problem.

Tensile Strength – the maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched before fracturing. Memory tip: ‘Tensile = tension’, picture a rope pulled tight; high tensile steel stops bridges from snapping.

Compressive Strength – ability to resist crushing or squashing. ‘Compress’ means press together; concrete is strong in compression, which is why it’s used for foundations.

Ductility – how easily a material can be drawn into a wire without breaking. Think ‘ductile’ – a duct allows you to stretch the metal like plasticine; copper is highly ductile.

Hardness – resistance to surface indentation or scratching. Measured by the Mohs scale or Brinell test. Mnemonic: a diamond is hard to scratch – it’s the hardest natural material.

Toughness – the ability to absorb energy and deform plastically without fracturing. A tough material can take a hit; think of a ‘tough’ phone case that survives drops.

Fatigue – weakening of a material caused by repeated loading and unloading cycles. Even if the load is small, cracks can grow. Mnemonic: metal gets ‘tired’ just like you do after repetitive work.

2. Manufacturing Processes |

Production methods transform raw materials into finished components. Each process has a distinct mechanism – visualising them makes recall much easier.

Casting – pouring molten metal into a mould and letting it solidify. Think of casting a spell that shapes liquid metal into a solid form. Sand casting and die casting are common.

Forging – shaping metal using compressive forces, often while hot, through hammering or pressing. A blacksmith ‘forges’ a horsehoe – the metal grain flows, increasing strength.
