1. Understanding the Mock Paper Structure |

The Component 3 written paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 60 marks in total (45 marks for Section A and 15 marks for Section B). Section A requires you to answer questions on one set text you have studied practically, often asking you to explain how you would direct or perform an extract. Section B asks you to analyse and evaluate a live theatre production you have experienced. All questions are framed by four assessment objectives: AO1 (Create and develop ideas), AO2 (Apply theatrical skills), AO3 (Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed) and AO4 (Analyse and evaluate your own work and the work of others).

所有问题均由四个评估目标框定:AO1(创作与发展构思)、AO2(运用戏剧技能)、AO3(展现对戏剧发展与表演方式的认知与理解)以及 AO4(分析与评价自己及他人的作品)。

AO English Description
AO1 Create and develop ideas to communicate meaning for performance.
AO2 Apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in performance.
AO3 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed.
AO4 Analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others.

2. Section A Overview: Set Text Analysis | Section A 概览:指定文本分析

Section A normally features a single extract printed on the paper, followed by a series of questions that build in complexity. Early sub-questions might ask you to outline a costume, set or lighting design; the final extended question (usually worth 20 marks) almost always demands a detailed exploration of how you would use vocal and physical skills to perform a specific character in the given lines. Our mock paper uses an extract from Act 1 Scene 2 of ‘The Tempest’, focusing on Caliban’s explosive response to Prospero’s accusations.

3. Question Breakdown: Caliban’s Anger in Act 1 Scene 2 |

The extended question reads: ‘Explain how you would use your vocal and physical skills to perform the role of Caliban in this extract (lines 320–345) to reveal his anger and sense of injustice. You should refer to specific lines from the extract.’ To answer successfully, you must move beyond simply stating ‘I would speak angrily’ and instead become the actor in the examiner’s mind: describe precisely how you would manipulate pitch, pace, pause, projection, posture, gesture and facial expression, and link every choice to a specific moment in the text.

4. Vocal Skills: Projecting Rage and Injustice |

At the start of the extract, Caliban declares ‘This island’s mine, by Sycorax my mother, / Which thou tak’st from me.’ Here, I would deliver the first half-sentence with a deep, resonant chest voice to ground the claim in a sense of entitled history. On the word ‘mine’ I would suddenly spike my pitch upward, almost into a shout, to stress ownership. I would then drop into a gravelly, lower register on ‘thou tak’st from me’ and allow my voice to crack slightly on ‘tak’st’ – that crack of the voice, a deliberate vocal choice, would communicate the raw pain of dispossession. After speaking this line I would hold a three-second silence, letting the weight of injustice hang in the air, which also forces the examiner to imagine the tension.

5. Physical Skills: Embodying the ‘Savage and Deformed Slave’ |

Caliban is described in the dramatis personae as a ‘savage and deformed slave’. To physically manifest his anger, I would lower my centre of gravity into a semi-crouch, keeping my knees bent and my feet planted wide, as if ready to spring. I would lead with my left shoulder, turning my torso slightly away from Prospero, to show guarded hostility. When Caliban spits ‘You taught me language; and my profit on’t / Is, I know how to curse’, I would punctuate the word ‘curse’ by slamming my right fist into my left palm, channelling the fury of a being who has learned only violence through language. My fingers would be claw-tensed, trembling slightly, reinforcing the idea of a creature barely containing animalistic rage.

6. Crafting a Full Mark Answer |

A high-scoring response always weaves precise terminology with clear artistic intentions. Instead of writing ‘I would move angrily’, say ‘I would use a sharp, staccato stabbing gesture on each stressed syllable, directing the energy diagonally towards the audience, to externalise Caliban’s internal torment.’ Also, avoid listing; structure your paragraph around one idea at a time. For instance, begin with a clear topic sentence: ‘My vocal delivery in the line beginning “Thou didst prevent me” would be deliberately fractured to mirror Caliban’s psychological fragmentation.’ Then develop that idea with detailed description and reference to the effect on an audience.

7. Section B Overview: Live Theatre Review | Section B

Section B asks you to evaluate a moment of live theatre you have actually seen. The question usually targets one or two performers and their use of physical and vocal skills to create a specific mood or effect. Our mock question is: ‘Analyse how one or two performers used their physical and vocal skills to create tension and engagement in one key scene from a live theatre production you have seen. Give detailed examples and explain the effects on the audience.’ You must refer to a genuine production, giving full details of venue, date and performance style, and you must write in the past tense as you are recounting a real event.

8. Selecting a Focus Scene and Performers |

For this walkthrough, I will refer to a production of ‘The Woman in Black’ seen at the Fortune Theatre, London, in a 2023 revival. The key scene occurs in the nursery, where the rocking chair begins to move of its own accord while the protagonist, Arthur Kipps, is reading letters. The two performers I will analyse are the actor playing Arthur (henceforth ‘the Actor’) and the actor playing the Woman (a silent, physical role). Both used carefully orchestrated vocal and physical choices to ratchet up tension and keep the audience breathless.

9. Structuring Your Live Theatre Analysis |

A strong Section B answer follows a clear architecture: a brief introduction naming the production, venue, date and style; two or three analytical paragraphs, each focused on one performer skill; and a crisp conclusion that directly answers the question and comments on combined effect. Each analytic paragraph should open with a sentence that identifies the skill and the intended effect, then zoom into micro-moments – a specific gesture, a sudden pause, a shift in tempo – and always end by evaluating the audience’s reaction. The examiner must be able to visualise the moment as if they were in the auditorium.

10. Exemplar Paragraph: Building Tension through Physicality |

In the nursery scene, the Actor playing Arthur Kipps used physical stillness with devastating effect. As the rocking chair began to creak, he froze mid-step, his right foot suspended just above the stage floor. Every muscle in his body locked, yet his eyes darted frantically around the dark nursery, tracing unseen movement. This statue-like stillness, held for an almost unbearable six seconds, contrasted sharply with the earlier bustling energy of his letter-reading, making the audience hyper-aware that something unnatural was occurring. When he finally lowered his foot, he did so with excruciating slowness, as if afraid the floorboards themselves might betray him. The collective intake of breath in the auditorium confirmed how effectively the moment had absorbed every spectator.

11. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

One frequent slip is forgetting to name the production or venue, which costs marks under AO3. Another is commenting on design elements in Section B when the question explicitly asks about performers’ skills – keep your focus on acting. Many students also list adjectives instead of explaining process: ‘He was tense’ is weaker than ‘He maintained a rigid spine and clenched fists throughout the monologue, channelling his tension into a visible physical strain.’ Finally, not using subject-specific vocabulary (‘pace’, ‘pitch’, ‘projection’, ‘posture’, ‘gesture’, ‘facial expression’, ‘proxemics’) will severely limit your marks. If you cannot place the theatrical term, the examiner cannot award the knowledge credit.

12. Revision Checklist and Final Tips |

As you continue revising, use the following checklist to self-assess every practice answer. First, have you included specific line references or production details? Second, have you named at least three vocal or physical skills using correct terminology? Third, have you clearly stated the intended effect on the audience in every paragraph? Fourth, does your Section B answer identify venue, date, and style? Consistent practice with these checkpoints will transform average answers into top-band responses. Remember, the Eduqas paper rewards acting choices that are precisely described, motivated by the text, and evaluated through audience impact.
