📚 Year 11 OCR English: Top Tips from a Grade 9 Student |

As a student who achieved a Grade 9 in both OCR GCSE English Language and English Literature, I often get asked what made the difference. The truth is, there is no single magic trick — it was a combination of understanding the exam board’s expectations, disciplined practice, and a few key strategies that transformed my writing. In this article I will share the methods that helped me move from a predicted Grade 6 to the top grade, so you can apply them to your own revision and exam technique.

1. Understand What the Mark Schemes Truly Mean |

Many students glance at mark schemes once and never return to them. I treat them as my revision roadmap. For OCR Language Paper 1, the difference between a ‘clear’ and a ‘perceptive’ comment comes down to depth of analysis. I photocopied the top band descriptors and highlighted phrases such as ‘detailed and perceptive understanding’, ‘analysis of writer’s methods’, and ‘use of subject terminology’. Every time I wrote a practice answer, I cross-checked my paragraph against the descriptors to see if I had moved beyond generic statements.

In Literature, the mark scheme rewards ‘critical style’ and ‘exploration of ideas’. I learned to avoid paraphrasing the plot and instead dug into how a writer’s choices shape meaning. For example, when discussing Dickens’ use of symbolism in A Christmas Carol, I would ask myself: why a ‘chains’ metaphor, why at that moment? This constant self-questioning trained my brain to write perceptively.

2. Build a Terminology Toolkit Before You Write |

Examiners expect you to name literary devices, but they hate ‘feature spotting’. I built a toolkit of 25 versatile terms I could confidently use in any analysis. I did not memorise definitions in isolation; I practised applying them in sentences. Here is a table of some of my go-to terms with the kind of effect I could quickly recall:
