1. The Nature of God |

In philosophical theism, God is described as omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), omnibenevolent (all-loving), and eternal. These attributes shape many of the later debates about God’s existence and His relationship with the world.

God is also said to be transcendent (beyond the physical universe) and immanent (present within creation). Different traditions emphasise one aspect over the other, and students often explore whether these attributes are logically compatible with the existence of evil.

2. The Design Argument |

The Design Argument claims that the order, complexity, and purpose seen in the natural world point to an intelligent designer. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy is a classic formulation: if you find a watch on a heath, its intricate mechanism implies a watchmaker; similarly, the universe implies a divine designer.

Critics like David Hume argued that the analogy is weak—the universe is not sufficiently like a machine—and even if a designer exists, it does not prove the God of classical theism. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection offered a non-theistic explanation for biological complexity.

3. The First Cause Argument |

The First Cause Argument, often associated with Thomas Aquinas, states that everything that exists has a cause; the universe exists, so it must have a cause; an infinite regress of causes is impossible, therefore there must be an uncaused first cause, which is God.

Aquinas presented the ‘Second Way’ based on efficient causation. The Islamic philosopher Al-Kindi developed a similar Kalam cosmological argument, asserting that the universe had a beginning and therefore needs a cause outside of time and space.

Hume and Bertrand Russell challenged the idea that the universe as a whole needs a cause, and modern physics proposes models such as the Big Bang that do not rely on a personal first mover.

4. Religious Experience and Revelation |

Religious experience is a non-empirical way of coming to know God. Key types include mystical experiences (a direct sense of union with the divine), numinous experiences (an overwhelming feeling of awe and holiness, described by Rudolf Otto), and conversion experiences (a dramatic change in belief and life direction).

Revelation refers to God making Himself known, either generally through nature and conscience, or specially through scripture, prophets, and for Christians, Jesus Christ. Philosophy examines whether such experiences can be trusted as evidence for God’s existence.

Critics point to the conflicting claims of different religions, the possibility of psychological hallucinations, and the lack of verifiable public evidence. William James argued that the fruits of religious experience in a person’s life can be a test of authenticity.

5. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil is the most powerful argument against the existence of an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God. If God is all-powerful, He could prevent evil; if He is all-loving, He would want to prevent it; yet evil exists. The logical problem argues that the existence of any evil is incompatible with God’s attributes.

The evidential problem, formulated by John Mackie and others, focuses on the sheer amount and intensity of gratuitous suffering in the world. It claims that, while some suffering may serve a purpose, the quantity of apparently pointless suffering makes God’s existence unlikely.

6. Responses to the Problem of Evil |

Theodicies are attempts to justify God’s goodness despite evil. The Augustinian theodicy sees evil as a privation of good, not a thing in itself, originating from the abuse of free will by angels and humans. All suffering is a consequence of sin, and God’s justice is demonstrated through punishment and redemption.

The Irenaean theodicy, developed by John Hick, presents creation as a soul-making process. Humans are created imperfect, and through facing challenges and freely choosing the good, they mature into the likeness of God. Evil is necessary for this spiritual growth.

The free will defence argues that a world with morally free creatures who sometimes choose evil is better than a world of robots. Genuine love and goodness require the possibility of choosing otherwise, which inevitably leads to moral evil.

7. Miracles | 神迹

A miracle is commonly defined as an extraordinary event that breaks the laws of nature and is caused by God. In the OCR philosophy syllabus, you study examples such as the resurrection of Jesus, healing miracles in the gospels, and modern claims of miraculous events.

David Hume offered a classic challenge: miracles violate the uniform laws of nature, which are established by overwhelming evidence. He argued that it is always more probable that the testimony is mistaken than that a miracle occurred.

Richard Swinburne defended miracles by arguing that if God exists, miracles are possible as acts of divine interaction with the world. He also suggested that we can assess testimony by applying the principle of testimony and credulity.

8. Science and Religion |

Science and religion offer different ways of explaining the world. Science relies on empirical observation, hypothesis testing, and falsification, while religion appeals to revelation, faith, and sacred texts. Some see them in conflict, particularly on creation and miracles.

The Genesis creation accounts are interpreted in various ways: literalist, conservative, or liberal. The Big Bang theory and evolution challenge a literal six-day creation, but many theistic believers accept these scientific theories and see them as describing how God created.

Stephen Jay Gould proposed the NOMA (Non-Overlapping Magisteria) principle, arguing that science and religion address different questions and can coexist without conflict. Others, like Richard Dawkins, insist that religious truth claims encroach on scientific territory.

9. The Afterlife | 来世

Beliefs about life after death vary across religions. For Christians, the afterlife typically involves resurrection of the body, judgement, and eternal life in heaven or hell. Philosophical questions arise about personal identity: how can a resurrected person be the same individual?

Plato argued for the immortality of the soul, which existed before birth and continues after death, while Aristotle saw the soul as the form of the body, making a separate existence after death problematic.

Reincarnation, central to Hinduism and Buddhism, involves the soul being reborn into a new body. John Hick’s replica theory proposes that God could recreate an exact replica of a person in a new world, preserving identity through divine memory.

10. The Soul and the Body |

Dualism is the view that the mind (or soul) and body are two distinct substances. Plato’s dualism holds that the soul is a non-physical essence trapped in the body and liberated at death. Descartes argued, ‘I think, therefore I am,’ separating the thinking self from the extended physical body.

Materialism claims that conscious experience can be fully explained by physical processes in the brain. There is no separate soul; when the body dies, consciousness ceases. This view is compatible with much of modern neuroscience.

In Christianity, the traditional view is that humans are a unity of body and soul, and resurrection involves God transforming the whole person, not rescuing a soul from a worthless body. This modifies strict dualism.

11. Good and Evil in Human Nature |

Philosophical anthropology asks whether human beings are fundamentally good, evil, or morally neutral. Augustine taught original sin: humanity inherits a fallen nature from Adam, inclining people towards evil and making divine grace necessary for goodness.

Pelagius opposed this view, arguing that God would not command the impossible; humans are born morally neutral, with free will capable of choosing good without inherited guilt. The Council of Carthage condemned Pelagianism.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau famously claimed that humans are naturally good, but corrupted by society. Secular humanism often holds a similar position, emphasising moral progress and the human capacity for empathy.
