1. Understanding the National 5 Art and Design Course |

The SQA National 5 Art and Design course encourages you to explore your creativity through two major practical units and a written exam. You will develop skills in observing, recording, and responding to the visual world while learning how to analyse and evaluate artworks by artists and designers. The course is graded from A to D, with the final award based on a portfolio and a question paper. It is important to understand that the course is not just about making art; it also asks you to think critically and communicate your ideas effectively.

The course is designed around three components: the Expressive Portfolio, the Design Portfolio, and the Question Paper. Together, they assess your practical art-making, design problem-solving, and knowledge of art and design contexts. Mark allocations are heavily weighted towards the portfolios, so regular studio work is essential. Getting familiar with this framework now will help you plan your time and focus your efforts from day one.

2. Expressive Portfolio: Capturing Personal Response |

In the Expressive unit, you will produce a portfolio that demonstrates your ability to investigate a theme or subject and develop a personal response. This can be based on portraiture, still life, landscape, figure composition or any other expressive genre. You are expected to gather first-hand visual research through drawing, photography and quick studies, then refine your ideas using a variety of media such as pencil, charcoal, paint or printmaking. The final outcome should be a resolved piece of artwork that shows sustained development and skilful handling of materials.

Your Expressive Portfolio will be marked on three broad areas: research and investigation, development and experimentation, and the final piece. Annotated sketchbook pages are crucial here because they reveal your thought process, mistakes and breakthroughs. Over the summer, begin a sketchbook dedicated to a theme that excites you — for example, reflections in glass, urban textures or personal identity — and fill it with observational drawings, material experiments and artist inspirations.

3. Design Portfolio: Solving Problems Creatively |

The Design Portfolio challenges you to respond to a design brief and go through the design process to create a functional outcome. You can work in areas such as graphic design, product design, fashion and textiles, jewellery, or architecture. The starting point is always a problem or need — for instance, designing a reusable packaging system or a poster for a social campaign. You must research existing solutions, generate multiple ideas, experiment with visual elements like colour and typography, and then model or prototype your concept before realising a final design.

Assessment focuses on your ability to research, develop ideas, refine and present a final design solution. Visual communication is key: your portfolio should be rich with annotated sketches, mood boards, material samples and digital or physical models. As a summer task, choose an everyday object that frustrates you — a messy desk organiser or an unreadable map — and brainstorm how you would redesign it. Document all stages of thinking and sketching so you have an early design cycle to discuss with your teacher.

4. The Question Paper: Critical and Contextual Knowledge |

The 50-mark question paper tests your understanding of artists’ and designers’ work in context. You will be asked to analyse unseen images and write about the expressive and design works you have studied throughout the course. It is divided into two sections: Expressive Art Studies and Design Studies. For each, you need to describe works in detail, discuss the use of visual elements and materials, and explain how context and influences shape meaning. Preparing for this paper is not a last-minute task; it draws directly from the investigations you embed into your portfolio projects.

Over the summer, start building a visual bank of key artists and designers. Look at National Galleries of Scotland online collections, or explore movements like Impressionism, Pop Art and contemporary installation. Create a slide or sketchbook page for each artist, summarising their style, techniques and one notable artwork. This habit will strengthen your analytical vocabulary and give you a reservoir of examples for the exam.

5. Essential Drawing and Observational Skills |

Strong drawing skills underpin success in both the Expressive and Design portfolios. The SQA examiners look for evidence of direct observation — drawing from real life rather than from photographs — and a willingness to experiment with line, tone, texture and mark-making. Set aside 20 minutes a day over the summer to draw from objects around your home: a pair of trainers, a houseplant, your own reflection. Try continuous line drawing, blind contour, and gestural sketching to loosen your hand and sharpen your eye.

Equally important is tonal work. Practice rendering light and shadow using hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and blending. Use a viewfinder to isolate a composition and focus on negative space. The summer is the perfect low-pressure time to fill pages without worrying about perfection. Remember that your initial messy studies are the building blocks of high-quality portfolio work, so keep everything.

6. Experimenting with Media and Techniques |

National 5 portfolios that earn high marks demonstrate a broad range of media exploration. Do not limit yourself to a single pencil grade. Over the holidays, invest in a small set of materials: soft pastels, watercolours, acrylic paint, collage papers, ink, fine liners, and perhaps digital tools such as a basic drawing app on a tablet. Explore how each medium can express different moods — the fluidity of ink wash versus the texture of oil pastel. Document your experiments on sketchbook pages with notes on what worked and what you would avoid next time.

For design portfolios, material experiments might involve creating colour palettes using gouache, modelling with clay or card, or digitally manipulating images. The key is to demonstrate that you have actively made choices rather than simply using the first medium you pick up. As you experiment, keep a glossary of new techniques, such as sgraffito, frottage or wet-on-wet watercolour, and annotate how they could be applied in your coursework.

7. Researching Artists and Designers |

Examiners want to see that your own work has been informed by the wider art and design world. Instead of simply copying an artist, analyse why they made certain choices and how that inspires your own direction. Create a research page for at least four artists or designers over the summer — two expressive and two design-focused. Possible expressive figures: Jenny Saville, Francis Bacon, Joan Eardley, or the Glasgow Boys. Design examples: Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Vivienne Westwood, Norman Foster, or graphic designer Paula Scher.

For each research page, include a high-quality reproduction of a key work, your own visual response (such as a pastiche or study of a detail), and analytical writing. Address the formal elements: composition, colour, line, texture, form and space. Also consider the social or historical context that shaped the work. These pages will form direct evidence for the written exam and enrich your portfolio annotations.

8. Building a Summer Sketchbook Routine |

A well-kept sketchbook is your most powerful tool for the National 5 course. It should not be a tidy scrapbook of finished pieces but a raw, honest document of your visual thinking. Aim to fill at least 20 pages over the break. Set prompts for yourself: ‘draw your breakfast’, ‘capture shadow patterns at noon’, ‘invent a creature from kitchen utensils’. The goal is to build fluency and overcome the fear of the blank page so that when term begins, you already have a rich reservoir of visual material to draw upon.

Incorporate mixed media: combine drawing with collaged textures, found text, and quick colour washes. Date each page and add short reflective notes — what you discovered, what surprised you, what you might develop further. Treat your sketchbook as a visual diary. When you return to school, this will give you and your teacher an immediate starting point for discussion and project planning.

9. Developing a Personal Theme or Area of Interest |

Summer is the perfect time to think about what truly captivates you. Your Expressive portfolio will be stronger if it centres on a theme you have a genuine connection with — not a topic you think will impress. Brainstorm ideas in a mind map: nature and decay, childhood memories, cultural identity, the human figure in motion, the geometry of cityscapes. Collect photographic references that you can use legally, and begin to annotate why the subject matters to you personally.

For the Design unit, identify a real-world problem you care about, such as reducing single-use plastics in school canteens, improving mental health awareness through poster design, or creating an inclusive playground. The more specific your focus, the easier it will be to design a meaningful solution. Write a short design brief for yourself and begin collecting images of existing products or designs that attempt to solve similar issues — this research will directly feed into your portfolio work.

10. Writing About Art and Design: Annotation Skills |

Annotation is not an afterthought; it counts toward marks and shows the examiner your evaluative ability. Good annotations narrate the journey: what you attempted, what succeeded, what failed and why. Use sentence starters such as ‘I explored…’, ‘This technique was effective because…’, ‘I was influenced by…’, ‘My next step will be…’. Practise writing short paragraphs next to your sketches this summer, even if they feel awkward at first.

You should also practise analysing artworks using the formal elements. Pick an image from an artist you researched and write two paragraphs: one describing the artwork precisely (what you see), and another interpreting its possible meaning or mood. This parallel practice of making and writing will make the Question Paper far less intimidating and raise the standard of your portfolio annotation.

11. Organising Your Workspace and Digital Files |

Good art thrives when logistics are in place. Before Year 11 ramps up, prepare a dedicated space at home where you can leave out materials without constant tidying. Organise your physical supplies in labelled boxes and create folders on your phone or computer for each project, with subfolders for reference photos, research, and progress shots. Back up your images regularly. Digital organisation will save you stress when compiling your folio for submission.

Also familiarise yourself with the SQA submission requirements: portfolios are often photographed or scanned and uploaded digitally. Practise photographing your 2D work under good lighting with a neutral background. For 3D design work, take multiple angles. Clear documentation can make the difference between a marker missing details and a fully appreciated presentation. Use some summer time to test your phone camera setups and learn basic cropping and editing.

12. Summer Project: A Micro Portfolio |

To put everything together, challenge yourself to a mini portfolio project over three weeks. Week one: choose a theme and produce six observational drawings in different media. Week two: research two relevant artists and create a visual response to each. Week three: develop one drawing into a more resolved artwork, showing clear progress from concept to final piece, and annotate each stage. This condensed experience will mirror the structure of the Expressive unit and give you a tangible head start.

For a design-focused mini project, take a simple brief like ‘Create a poster for a school band concert’ and run through the full design process: research existing music posters, create three different layout thumbnails, develop one using your choice of media, and present the final poster with a client mock-up. This self-directed run will boost your confidence hugely and provide ready-made discussion pieces when term starts.
