1. Semiotics – Signs and Codes |

Semiotics is the study of how meaning is made through signs. In CCEA Media you must know the building blocks: sign, signifier, signified, denotation, connotation, and three main types of sign – iconic, indexical, symbolic. Codes organise these signs into systems, including technical codes (camera, editing), symbolic codes (colours, gestures), and written codes (captions, headlines).

Sign – anything that can stand for something else.

Signifier – the physical form of the sign (sound, word, image).

Signified – the mental concept a sign evokes.

Denotation – the literal, dictionary meaning.

Connotation – the cultural and emotional associations linked to a sign.

Iconic sign – a sign that physically resembles what it represents (a photograph, a drawing).

Indexical sign – a sign that has a direct, causal link to its object (smoke indicates fire).

Symbolic sign – a sign whose meaning is entirely conventional and must be learned (the word ‘tree’, a red traffic light).

Memory hook: use the acronym ‘SID-C’. S = Signifier/Signified; I = Iconic/Indexical; D = Denotation/Connotation; C = Codes. Picture a lid labelled ‘SID’ covering a box of codes.

2. Narrative Theories – Story Structures |

CCEA exams expect you to apply narrative theorists confidently. The four key names are Todorov, Propp, Barthes and Levi-Strauss. Remember them with the phrase ‘Every Pupil Bakes Lovely’ (Equilibrium, Propp, Barthes, Levi-Strauss).

Todorov’s narrative stages: Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to repair → New equilibrium. Link them with ‘Every Donkey Runs After Nuts’.

Propp’s seven character types: Hero, Villain, Donor, Helper, Princess, Dispatcher, False Hero. Memorise them as ‘Villain’s Heroic Donkey Helps Princess Dance, False!’ – each capital letter stands for one type in order.

Barthes’ five narrative codes: Hermeneutic (enigma), Proairetic (action), Semantic, Symbolic, Cultural. Use ‘Happy People Sing Sweet Carols’ – H P S S C.

用“Happy People Sing Sweet Carols”——H P S S C来记忆。

Levi-Strauss’ binary oppositions: narratives are driven by pairs of opposing concepts (good vs evil, nature vs culture). Think ‘Levi’s binary jeans’ – two legs, two opposing forces.
