1. Pinyin Rules & Tone Marks | 拼音规则与声调标记

Pinyin is the foundation of accurate pronunciation. The tone mark is always placed on the main vowel of the final. When a final contains two or more vowels, the standard sequence decides which vowel carries the mark: ‘a’ or ‘e’ always takes it; in ‘ou’, the mark goes on ‘o’; in ‘iu’ and ‘ui’, the mark falls on the second letter, but remember ‘iu’ is a contraction of ‘iou’, so the tone sits on the ‘u’. Tone marks must be clear and distinct, as they determine meaning.

拼音是准确发音的基础。声调符号始终标在韵母的主要元音上。如果韵母含有两个或以上元音,按照标准顺序:’a’ 或 ‘e’ 优先承载声调;’ou’ 中标在 ‘o’ 上;’iu’ 和 ‘ui’ 标在第二个字母上,但请记住 ‘iu’ 是 ‘iou’ 的缩写,因此声调标在 ‘u’ 上。声调符号必须清晰可辨,因为它直接决定词义。

The four tones and the neutral tone form a closed system. First tone is high and level (ā), second tone rises (á), third tone dips then rises (ǎ), and fourth tone falls sharply (à). The neutral tone is light and short, with no mark. In connected speech, tone sandhi rules apply: a third tone before another third tone changes to second tone (nǐ + hǎo → ní hǎo), and the negation ‘bù’ shifts to second tone before a fourth tone (bù + shì → bú shì).

四个声调加轻声构成封闭系统。第一声高而平(ā),第二声上扬(á),第三声先降后升(ǎ),第四声急降(à)。轻声又轻又短,不标调。在语流中需要遵守变调规则:两个第三声连读时,前一个变为第二声(nǐ + hǎo → ní hǎo);否定副词 “不” 在第四声前变为第二声(bù + shì → bú shì)。

Tone 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Neutral
Example mā (mother) má (hemp) mǎ (horse) mà (scold) ma (question particle)

2. Stroke Order Principles | 汉字书写笔画原则

Correct stroke order promotes legibility, speed, and balanced character structure. Eight fundamental rules govern the vast majority of Hanzi: first horizontal then vertical; first left-falling then right-falling; from top to bottom; from left to right; outer strokes before inner strokes; outside frame before inside strokes but close the frame last; centre strokes before symmetrical sides; and dot strokes are written last when they appear on the top-right or inside.

正确的笔顺有助于提高书写清晰度、速度和字体结构的匀称。绝大多数汉字遵循八条基本规则:先横后竖;先撇后捺;从上到下;从左到右;先外后内;先进门后封口(外框先写但最后封底横);先中间后两边;右上角或内部的点最后写。

For example, the character ‘十’ is written horizontal then vertical. ‘八’ follows left-falling stroke then right-falling stroke. ‘国’ begins with the outer enclosure ‘口’ shape, then the inside element ‘玉’, and the final horizontal stroke closes the frame. ‘小’ demonstrates the centre-before-sides rule: the central vertical hook, then left dot, then right dot. Practising stroke order regularly turns the writing process into muscle memory, reducing mistakes under time pressure in the exam.

例如,”十” 先写横后写竖。”八” 先撇后捺。”国” 先写外框 “口” 形,再写内部 “玉”,最后底横封口。”小” 展现了先中间后两边的规则:先写中间的竖钩,再写左边的点,最后写右边的点。经常练习笔顺能将书写过程转化为肌肉记忆,减少考试时间压力下的错误。

3. Basic Sentence Structures | 基本句子结构

The core Chinese sentence follows the Subject–Verb–Object (SVO) pattern, identical to English in its broadest form. The key difference lies in the placement of time phrases, location phrases, and adverbial modifiers: they generally precede the verb. The formula is: Subject + Time + Location + Manner + Verb + Object. Learning this sequence eliminates most word-order errors.

中文句子的核心结构是主谓宾(SVO),和英语大致相同。关键区别在于时间短语、地点短语和状语修饰语通常放在动词之前。基本公式是:主语 + 时间 + 地点 + 方式 + 动词 + 宾语。掌握这个顺序可以消除大部分语序错误。

A very common pattern is the topic-comment structure, where the topic is placed at the beginning of the sentence even when it is grammatically the object: ‘Zhè bù diànyǐng wǒ kàn guo’ (This film I have seen). Another essential pattern is the ‘shì … de’ construction for emphasising time, place, or manner of a completed action: ‘Wǒ shì zuótiān lái de’ (It was yesterday that I came). Furthermore, adjective predicates do not require a verb ‘to be’: ‘Tā hěn cōngmíng’ (She very smart), not ‘She is very smart’.

还有一种极为常见的句式是主题-评论结构,也就是将主题放在句首,即使它在语法上是宾语:”这部电影我看过”。另一个基本结构是强调已完成动作的时间、地点或方式的 “是……的” 句式:”我是昨天来的”。此外,形容词谓语句无需加系动词 “是”:”她很聪明”,而不是 “她是聪明”。

Pattern Formula Example
SVO S + V + O Wǒ xué Zhōngwén (I study Chinese).
Topic-Comment Topic + S + V Zhè jiàn shì wǒ bù zhīdào (I don’t know about this matter).
是……的 S + shì + detail + V + de Tā shì cóng Běijīng lái de (He came from Beijing).

4. Aspect Particles 了 着 过 | 动态助词“了”“着”“过”

Chinese verbs do not inflect for tense; instead, aspect particles attach to verbs to show the state of an action. The three main particles are 了 (le) for completed or changed-state actions, 着 (zhe) for continuous or ongoing states, and 过 (guo) for past experience. Mastering these three ‘formulas’ will drastically improve your grammatical accuracy in both spoken and written tasks.

中文动词没有时态变化,而是通过动态助词附着在动词后面来表达动作的状态。三个主要的动态助词是:表示动作完成或状态改变的 “了”,表示持续状态的 “着”,以及表示过去经历的 “过”。掌握这三条 “公式” 能显著提升你在口语和写作中的语法准确性。

Completed action 了 is placed directly after the verb when a specific quantity or object follows: ‘Wǒ mǎi le sān běn shū’ (I bought three books). Changed-state 了 appears at the end of the sentence and signals a new situation: ‘Tiānqì lěng le’ (It has become cold). The experiential 过 emphasises that an event took place at least once in the past: ‘Wǒ qù guo Chángchéng’ (I have been to the Great Wall). The durative 着 is used after verbs to describe a continuous posture or simultaneous action: ‘Tā názhe yī běn shū’ (She is holding a book), or ‘Xiàozhe shuō’ (say with a smile).

动作完成 “了” 直接放在动词后面,后接具体数量或宾语时:”我买了三本书”。状态改变 “了” 出现在句末,表示出现了新情况:”天气冷了”。经历 “过” 强调动作在过去至少发生过一次:”我去过长城”。持续态 “着” 用在动词之后,描述持续的姿态或同时进行的动作:”她拿着一本书”,或 “笑着说”。

5. Complements in Chinese | 中文补语结构

Complements add vital information after the verb, and they come in several structural formulas. Resultative complements (V + adjective/verb) express the outcome of an action: ‘kàn wán’ (finish reading), ‘tīng dǒng’ (understand by listening). Directional complements (V + lái/qù) indicate movement towards or away from the speaker: ‘ná chūlái’ (take out), ‘fàng jìnqu’ (put inside). Potential complements (V + de/bù + complement) show ability or inability to achieve the result: ‘kàn de wán’ (able to finish reading) vs ‘kàn bù wán’ (cannot finish reading).

补语在动词之后补充关键信息,有几种结构公式。结果补语(动词 + 形容词/动词)表达动作的结果:”看完”、”听懂”。趋向补语(动词 + 来/去)表示朝向或背离说话者的位移:”拿出来”、”放进去”。可能补语(动词 + 得/不 + 补语)表示能或不能达到某种结果:”看得完” 与 “看不完”。

Degree complements (V + de + adjective) describe the extent or manner of an action. The pattern is extremely useful for giving opinions: ‘Tā pǎo de hěn kuài’ (He runs very fast), ‘Zhège cài zuò de hǎochī’ (This dish is made deliciously). State complements also use ‘de’ to link the verb to a descriptive phrase: ‘Lǎoshī shuō de wǒmen dōu xiào le’ (The teacher spoke in such a way that we all laughed). Treat these as modular formulas you can plug vocabulary into.

程度补语(动词 + 得 + 形容词)描述动作的广度或方式。这个句型用于表达观点时特别有用:”他跑得很快”,”这个菜做得好吃”。状态补语同样用 “得” 将动词和描写性短语连接起来:”老师说得我们都笑了”。把这些当作模块化公式,你填入词汇即可使用。

6. Rhetorical Devices | 常用修辞手法

Rhetorical devices in Chinese writing help make essays vivid and persuasive. The most tested ones include 比喻 bǐyù (metaphor/simile), 拟人 nǐrén (personification), 排比 páibǐ (parallelism), and 反问 fǎnwèn (rhetorical question). Using them appropriately in the writing paper can raise your mark in the content and style criteria.

中文写作中的修辞手法能让文章更加生动、有说服力。考试最常涉及的包括比喻、拟人、排比和反问。在写作中恰当地运用这些手法可以提升你在内容与风格方面的得分。

比喻 often uses the markers ‘像’ (like), ‘好像’ (as if), ‘如同’ (just like) for similes, or ‘是’ for metaphors: ‘时间就是金钱’ (Time is money). 拟人 gives human qualities to non-human things: ‘春风轻轻地抚摸着我的脸’ (The spring breeze gently caressed my face). 排比 repeats a sentence pattern three or more times to build rhythm and emphasis: ‘我爱祖国的山,我爱祖国的水,我爱祖国的人民’ (I love the mountains of my motherland, I love the waters of my motherland, I love the people of my motherland). 反问 asks a question that contains its own answer: ‘难道这不是事实吗?’ (Isn’t this a fact?).

比喻常用 “像”、”好像”、”如同” 作为比喻词构成明喻,或用 “是” 构成暗喻:”时间就是金钱”。拟人把人的特质赋予物:”春风轻轻地抚摸着我的脸”。排比是将同一句式重复三次或以上,营造节奏感和强调效果:”我爱祖国的山,我爱祖国的水,我爱祖国的人民”。反问句本身就是答案的反问:”难道这不是事实吗?”

7. Essay Writing Templates | 写作模板

For the WJEC writing tasks, having a clear formula for essay structure can save time and ensure a logical flow. An argumentative essay (议论文) typically follows: introduction stating your position; two or three body paragraphs each with a topic sentence, evidence, and explanation; a counter-argument paragraph to show balance; and a conclusion that restates the position with a forward-looking statement. A narrative essay (记叙文) follows a timeline or event sequence: background introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution, all enriched with descriptive details.

在 WJEC 的写作任务中,掌握清晰的篇章结构公式可以节省时间并确保逻辑性。议论文通常这样展开:开头提出观点;两到三个主体段,每段包含中心句、证据和阐释;一个让步段展现辩证思考;结尾重申观点并展望。记叙文遵循时间或事件顺序:背景介绍、情节发展、高潮、回落和结局,并丰富描写细节。

Key phrases to embed in your template: for listing arguments, use ‘首先…其次…最后’ (first…second…lastly); for introducing examples, ‘例如…’ (for example…); for contrast, ‘然而…’ (however…); for conclusion, ‘总之…’ (in conclusion…). In narrative writing, time connectors are crucial: ‘刚开始…然后…突然…最后…’ (at the beginning…then…suddenly…finally…). Having these formulas ready means you can focus on content under timed conditions.

可以嵌入模板的关键短语有:列举论点用 “首先……其次……最后”;举例用 “例如……”;表转折用 “然而……”;总结用 “总之……”。记叙文中时间连接词很关键:”刚开始……然后……突然……最后……”。把这类公式准备好,你就能在限时条件下将精力集中在内容上。

8. Linking Words & Transitions | 连词与过渡词

Smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs create coherence, a marked criterion in the exam. Linking words for addition include ‘并且’ (and also), ‘此外’ (besides), ‘另外’ (moreover). For cause and effect, ‘因为…所以…’ (because…therefore…), ‘由于…因此…’ (owing to…hence…), form a stable logical chain. To express contrast or concession, use ‘虽然…但是…’ (although…but…), ‘不过’ (however), ‘却’ (yet).

句子和段落之间的顺畅过渡创造连贯性,这是考试评分的明确标准。表示补充的连词有 “并且”、”此外”、”另外”。表示因果关系的 “因为……所以……”、”由于……因此……” 构成稳固的逻辑链条。表示转折或让步的可用 “虽然……但是……”、”不过”、”却”。

For comparison and condition, apply ‘如果…就…’ (if…then…), ‘无论…都…’ (no matter…still…), ‘既…又…’ (both…and…). In summary statements, ‘总的来说’ (generally speaking), ‘综上所述’ (in summary), ‘显然’ (obviously) are effective. Overusing the same connector makes writing repetitive; learning at least three variations per function gives you lexical range. Treat each transition pair as a reusable formula to stitch your thoughts together.

表示条件和比较的,可用 “如果……就……”、”无论……都……”、”既……又……”。在总结性陈述中,”总的来说”、”综上所述”、”显然” 都很有效。过度使用同一个连接词会使文章显得重复;每种功能至少学会三种变体就能展示词汇的丰富性。把每对过渡词当作可重复使用的公式,用来缝合你的思路。

9. Measure Words (Classifiers) | 量词用法

Every noun in Chinese requires a measure word when quantified. The formula is: Number + Measure Word + Noun. The most common all-purpose measure word is ‘个’ gè, but using more specific classifiers demonstrates higher proficiency. For flat objects use ‘张’ (yī zhāng zhǐ – one piece of paper), for long thin objects ‘条’ (yī tiáo lù – one road), for items that come in pairs ‘双’ (yī shuāng kuàizi – a pair of chopsticks), and for bound volumes ‘本’ (yī běn shū – one book). For animals, ‘只’ is the default; for trees, ‘棵’; for liquids, ‘杯’ or ‘瓶’.

中文中每个名词在计量时都必须加上量词。公式为:数词 + 量词 + 名词。最常用的万能量词是 “个”,但使用更具体的量词能展示出更高的水平。扁平物体用 “张”(一张纸),长条状物体用 “条”(一条路),成对的物品用 “双”(一双筷子),装订成册的用 “本”(一本书)。动物通常用 “只”,树木用 “棵”,液体用 “杯” 或 “瓶”。

Verbal measure words quantify the frequency or duration of actions: ‘cì’ for instances (看一次 watch once), ‘biàn’ for complete processes from beginning to end (读一遍 read through once), ‘tàng’ for trips (去一趟 go on a trip). Semi-lexicalised patterns like 一天比一天’ (day by day, as in ‘一天比一天热’ hotter day by day) are also formulaic and impressive in writing. Having a mental catalogue of these ‘measure word formulas’ reduces errors and adds precision to your language.

动量词用来量化动作的频率或时长:”次” 表示次数(看一次),”遍” 强调从头到尾的完整过程(读一遍),”趟” 表示来回的行程(去一趟)。像 “一天比一天” 这种半固定用法(如 “一天比一天热”)也属于公式化表达,用在写作中很亮眼。在脑海中建立这些 “量词公式” 的目录,能减少偏误,使你的语言更精准。
