1. Force and Motion: Misconception that a Force is Required to Maintain Motion |

Misconception: Many students believe that a constant forward force must act on an object to keep it moving at a steady speed.

Correction: Newton’s First Law states that an object remains at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by a resultant external force. Uniform velocity implies that all forces are balanced and the net force is zero. A net force causes acceleration (a change in velocity), not the maintenance of constant velocity. When a cyclist coasts at constant speed, the forward force from gravity (down a slight slope) exactly balances air resistance and friction.

ΣF = m a ; if a = 0 then ΣF = 0 (v constant)

ΣF = m a ;若 a = 0 则 ΣF = 0,速度恒定

2. Action and Reaction Forces: The Cancellation Confusion |

Misconception: Students often think that action and reaction forces balance each other and cancel out, so the object experiencing them is in equilibrium.

Correction: Action and reaction forces act on different bodies. They can never cancel each other because they are not both acting on the same object. When you push a wall, the wall pushes back on you. The two forces act on you and the wall separately. To determine whether an object is in equilibrium, you must consider only the forces acting on that object. Newton’s third law helps identify force pairs, not the net force on a single body.

3. Free Fall: The Heavier-Objects-Fall-Faster Myth |

Misconception: Heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones because weight is greater.

Correction: In the absence of air resistance, all objects near the Earth’s surface fall with the same acceleration, g ≈ 9.81 m s⁻², independent of mass. This was demonstrated by Galileo’s reasoning and, famously, by the Apollo 15 feather and hammer drop on the Moon. The weight is mg, so the acceleration a = F/m = mg/m = g. Apparent differences in everyday life are due to air resistance, not a mass-dependent gravity.

重力为 mg,加速度 a = F/m = mg/m = g。

4. Momentum and Energy in Collisions: A Dangerous Oversimplification |

Misconception: Total momentum and total kinetic energy are always conserved in any collision.

Correction: The total momentum of an isolated system is conserved in all collisions, because momentum is a vector quantity and no external forces act. However, total kinetic energy is conserved only in perfectly elastic collisions. In inelastic collisions, some kinetic energy is transformed into thermal energy, sound or deformation. OCR questions frequently ask you to calculate velocities using conservation of momentum, then check whether kinetic energy is the same before and after the collision to identify the type of collision. Remember: momentum is always conserved, kinetic energy is not.

p = m v ; KE = ½ m v²

动量 p = m v ;动能 KE = ½ m v²

5. Electric Current: Electrons Do Not Move Near the Speed of Light |

Misconception: Electrons inside a wire travel at the speed of light, which is why a bulb lights up instantly when you close a switch.

Correction: When a circuit is completed, the electric field propagates along the wire at a speed close to light, causing all free electrons throughout the wire to begin drifting almost simultaneously. However, the drift speed of individual electrons is extremely low – typically a fraction of a millimetre per second. The near-instant lighting is due to the fast propagation of the electric signal, not the motion of electrons. The current equation is I = n A v e, where v is the tiny drift velocity. For a given current, a larger cross-sectional area A gives a smaller drift velocity.

I = n A v e

6. Resistance: The Filament Lamp Surprise |

Misconception: The resistance of a filament lamp is constant, so its current-voltage graph is a straight line through the origin.

Correction: A filament lamp is a non-ohmic conductor. As the current increases, the filament heats up significantly. The increased thermal vibrations of the metal lattice impede the flow of electrons, so its resistance rises. The I–V characteristic curves – it starts steep and becomes shallower at higher voltages. Ohm’s law (V = IR) can still be used at any instant, but R is not constant. For an ohmic conductor at constant temperature, the graph would be a straight line; the lamp’s deviation shows the effect of temperature on resistance.

7. Diffraction: When Does It Really Happen? |

Misconception: Diffraction only occurs when the slit or obstacle is smaller than the wavelength.

Correction: All waves diffract whenever they pass through a gap or around an obstacle. Diffraction is the spreading of a wave into the region that would be in the geometric shadow if the wave travelled in straight lines. The effect is most pronounced when the gap size or obstacle size is comparable to the wavelength. If the gap is much larger than λ, the wave passes through with negligible spreading. For a single slit, the central maximum width is approximately 2λD/a, so it is inversely proportional to the slit width a. Students must recognise that diffraction is always present, but the extent of spreading depends on the ratio λ/a.

Central maximum width ∝ λ / a

8. Interference: Not Any Two Torches Will Do | 干涉:任意两个电筒是不够的

Misconception: Any two light sources that emit the same colour can produce a clear, stable interference pattern.
