1. What is Sociology? A Systematic Study of Society |

Sociology is the systematic, evidence‑based study of human social life, groups, and societies. It differs from everyday opinions or common‑sense explanations because sociologists use rigorous research methods and theoretical frameworks to uncover patterns, challenge stereotypes, and understand how social structures — such as family, education, media, and the economy — shape individual experiences and identities. At its core, sociology asks: ‘How are we shaped by the society we live in, and how do we, in turn, shape that society?’

The sociological perspective encourages you to look beyond individual psychology and to examine the social context that surrounds people’s behaviour. For example, instead of asking why one person is unemployed, a sociologist investigates patterns of unemployment across regions, social classes, and ethnic groups, considering factors such as industrial decline, discrimination, and government policy. This ability to connect private troubles with public issues is what Charles Wright Mills famously called the ‘sociological imagination’.

2. Core Themes: Socialisation, Culture and Identity |

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which we learn the norms, values, and roles of our society. Primary socialisation occurs in early childhood within the family, where we acquire basic language, emotional patterns, and moral frameworks. Secondary socialisation takes place in later years through institutions such as schools, peer groups, mass media, and workplaces. These agencies transmit the broader culture and help to integrate individuals into social life.

Culture refers to the whole way of life of a particular group or society. It encompasses both material aspects — such as clothing, technology, and architecture — and non‑material aspects, including beliefs, language, customs, and rituals. Sociologists are particularly interested in the processes by which cultures are maintained and changed, and how dominant cultures coexist with subcultures and countercultures. Values such as competition, privacy, consumerism, or collectivism vary enormously across societies and historical periods.

Identity, in sociological terms, is both personal and social. It is constructed through interaction and recognises categories such as gender, ethnicity, social class, nationality, and disability. A key debate concerns the extent to which identities are ‘ascribed’ (fixed at birth) or ‘achieved’ (gained through effort). In late‑modern societies, many sociologists argue that identity has become increasingly fluid, reflexive, and open to choice, yet structural constraints such as poverty and racism still powerfully influence the range of identities available to individuals.

3. Key Sociological Perspectives: Competing Lenses on Society |

Functionalism views society as a system of interconnected parts — institutions like the family, education system, and religion — that work together to maintain stability and social order. Functionalists emphasise value consensus, and they argue that each institution performs essential ‘functions’. For instance, Talcott Parsons described the family’s function of primary socialisation and the stabilisation of adult personalities. Critics often accuse functionalism of ignoring conflict, downplaying inequality, and being overly deterministic.

Marxism, grounded in the writings of Karl Marx, sees society as structured by class conflict between the bourgeoisie (the ruling class who own the means of production) and the proletariat (the working class who sell their labour). Marxists argue that institutions such as education and the media function as ideological state apparatuses that legitimise inequality and maintain capitalist exploitation. Marxist feminists later extended this analysis to examine the interplay between capitalism and patriarchy.

Feminism foregrounds gender as a fundamental source of stratification. Liberal feminists seek legal and policy reforms to achieve equal opportunities; Marxist feminists link women’s oppression to the needs of capitalism; radical feminists argue that patriarchy — male dominance — is the primary system of oppression that predates class divisions. Intersectional feminists draw attention to how gender intersects with race, class, and sexuality to produce distinct experiences of advantage and disadvantage. All feminist perspectives insist that sociological research must consider the lived experiences of women.

Interactionism (or social action theory) shifts the focus from large‑scale structures to the micro‑level of everyday interactions. Symbolic interactionists, such as G.H. Mead and Howard Becker, explore how meanings are created and negotiated through language and symbols. Becker’s labelling theory, for example, shows how deviance is not inherent in an act but is a consequence of the application of rules and labels by those with power. This perspective reminds us that society is not simply a predetermined ‘thing’ but is actively constructed by social actors.

4. Understanding the Family: Historical Forms and Contemporary Diversity |

The family is one of the central institutions studied in Year 12 OCR Sociology. You will encounter debates about how to define a family, the extent of family diversity, and the changing patterns of marriage, divorce, and cohabitation. From a functionalist viewpoint, the nuclear family — a unit of parents and their dependent children — is considered universal and best suited to industrial society. The ‘march of progress’ thesis suggests that family life is becoming more egalitarian, with men and women increasingly sharing domestic and emotional labour.

However, critical perspectives challenge this optimistic picture. Feminists highlight the persistence of a patriarchal division of labour, where women still undertake the majority of housework and childcare, often alongside paid employment — the so‑called ‘double shift’ or ‘triple shift’ that also includes emotion work. Moreover, New Right thinkers express concern about the decline of the traditional nuclear family, linking family breakdown to wider social problems. A full examination of household statistics allows you to evaluate these competing claims.

You will also consider alternative family forms — including lone‑parent families, reconstituted families, same‑sex families, extended families, and LATs (living apart together) — and link family diversity to broader trends such as individualisation, secularisation, and globalisation. The Rapoports’ concept of ‘organisational diversity’, ‘cultural diversity’ and ‘life‑course diversity’ provides a useful typology for understanding variation in contemporary Britain.

5. Exploring Education: Policy, Processes and Inequality |

The sociology of education asks why some social groups consistently outperform others and whether schooling reduces or reproduces inequality. Functionalist accounts stress the role of education in transmitting shared values, teaching specialist skills, and allocating individuals to suitable occupational roles through meritocratic processes. In contrast, Marxists argue that education mainly serves to control the working class, legitimise privilege, and mirror the hierarchical relationships found in capitalist workplaces.

In‑school processes are a vital focus. Concepts like teacher labelling, the self‑fulfilling prophecy, setting and streaming, and pupil subcultures help explain differential achievement by class, gender, and ethnicity. For instance, interactionists demonstrate how teachers’ unconscious labels — ‘bright’, ‘troublesome’ — come to be internalised, shaping pupils’ self‑concept and performance. At the same time, external factors — material deprivation, cultural capital, parental attitudes — cannot be ignored. Bourdieu’s concepts of cultural, economic, and social capital remain highly influential in this field.

Education policy has seen dramatic shifts: from the tripartite system and grammar schools, to comprehensive schooling, marketisation, and the influence of league tables and Ofsted. More recent policies such as academisation and free schools continue to provoke debate about standards, equality of opportunity, and social mobility. As a sociologist, you will evaluate the impact of these policies on different social groups using official statistics and qualitative studies.

6. Mastering Research Methods: Thinking Like a Researcher |

Research methods form the ‘engine room’ of sociology, and OCR places a strong emphasis on methodological understanding. You must be able to distinguish between primary and secondary data, quantitative and qualitative methods, and understand the theoretical, practical, and ethical considerations — often summarised as PET (Practical, Ethical, Theoretical) — that influence choice of method. This is not just about knowing definitions; you need to apply these concepts to real research scenarios.

Key quantitative methods include questionnaires, structured interviews, and the analysis of official statistics. These produce numerical data that can reveal broad patterns, establish correlations, and be replicated easily. Key qualitative methods include participant observation, unstructured interviews, and the analysis of personal documents. These generate rich, in‑depth data that capture actors’ meanings, but are often more time‑consuming and harder to generalise. Mixed‑methods approaches attempt to combine the strengths of both.

Important theoretical concepts include validity, reliability, representativeness, and reflexivity. For example, a classic debate contrasts the positivists’ preference for objective, reliable, ‘scientific’ data collection with the interpretivists’ preference for emphatic understanding (Verstehen) and high validity. Practical issues — access, time, funding, researcher safety — also powerfully constrain research design. In your exam, you will be asked to evaluate the strengths and limitations of methods when applied to specific topics, such as researching sensitive topics like domestic abuse or studying pupils in a school setting.

7. Social Inequality: Class, Gender and Ethnicity |

Social inequality — the uneven distribution of resources, opportunities, and rewards — is a central concern of the OCR specification. Sociologists examine patterns of stratification along class, gender, and ethnic lines, and debate whether these systems of inequality are inevitable or can be transformed. You will explore wealth and income inequality, differences in life chances, and the concept of social mobility. The UK remains a deeply class‑divided society despite long‑standing claims about meritocracy.

Theories of class stratification range from Marx’s two‑class model to Weber’s multi‑dimensional analysis that added status and party (power) to economic class. More recent contributions, such as those of Goldthorpe and Savage, map the contemporary class structure onto categories like the precariat, the technical middle class, and traditional working class. Gender inequality remains visible in the gender pay gap, the glass ceiling, and the concentration of women in part‑time, caring, and lower‑paid ‘4Cs’ (caring, cashiering, catering, cleaning) occupations. Ethnic inequalities manifest in employment discrimination, differential educational attainment, and disproportionate stop‑and‑search patterns. Intersectional analysis reveals that these axes of inequality are not experienced separately; a black working‑class woman faces distinct, compounded disadvantage.

8. Globalisation and the Digital Society: New Directions |

Globalisation refers to the increasing interconnectedness of societies across the world, driven by advances in technology, communication, transport, and the expansion of multinational corporations. A key debate contrasts ‘optimist’ hyper‑globalisers, who see cultural choice and economic growth, with ‘pessimist’ globalisation theories that highlight cultural homogenisation, erosion of local identities, and widening inequality. Sociologists link globalisation to changes in family life, such as the migration of domestic workers and the global care chain.

The digital revolution is transforming how we interact, learn, consume, and experience identity. Networked individualism, filter bubbles, and the platform economy present new topics for sociological analysis. For the OCR course, it is fruitful to consider whether digital media reinforces or challenges traditional power structures. For example, does social media offer a voice to marginalised groups, or does it increase surveillance and data exploitation? Debates around fake news, echo chambers, and digital activism will enrich your understanding of contemporary society.

9. Assessment Objectives and Command Words in OCR Sociology | OCR

Understanding how you will be examined is crucial from the very start. OCR A Level Sociology uses three Assessment Objectives: AO1 (Knowledge and Understanding), AO2 (Application), and AO3 (Analysis and Evaluation). Command words in questions signal exactly what is expected. Below is a quick‑reference guide to the most frequent command words you will encounter in Component 1 (Socialisation, culture and identity, and either Families and relationships or Youth subcultures) and Component 2 (Research methods and Researching social inequalities).

OCR A Level 社会学运用三个评估目标:AO1(知识与理解)、AO2(应用)和 AO3(分析与评价)。

Give a precise meaning of a concept or term. AO1
State or briefly describe key points without detailed development. AO1, sometimes AO2
Explain | 解释 Make clear how or why something happens, using reasons and evidence. AO1, AO2
Using the source, … Apply material from the item provided, demonstrating explicit links. AO2
Analyse | 分析 Break down an issue into its components and examine their inter‑relations. AO3
Weigh up strengths and limitations, using evidence to reach a reasoned conclusion. AO3

Always underline command words in the exam question before planning your answer. A ‘define’ question worth 4 marks should occupy about 5 minutes and be tightly focused; an ‘evaluate’ 24‑mark essay demands a balanced argument, theoretical range, relevant studies, and a clear judgement sustained throughout.

10. How to Think Like a Sociologist: Critical Habits of Mind |

Thinking sociologically means moving beyond personal opinion and actively questioning taken‑for‑granted assumptions about the social world. It involves recognising the relationships between biography and history, between self and society. When reading a newspaper, watching a documentary, or scrolling through social media, train yourself to ask: ‘Who benefits from this account?’, ‘What evidence is being used?’, and ‘Which groups or interpretations are being silenced?’ This habit will serve you well in essays, where you are expected to juxtapose theories and evidence rather than simply describe.

Another key skill is ‘conceptual boxing’: when you encounter a new theory or study, immediately decide which perspective (functionalist, Marxist, feminist, interactionist, etc.) it belongs to, and what its main counter‑arguments would be. Create a mental or written table of theorists, key concepts, and one‑line evaluations. For example, ‘Parsons: organic analogy, role of socialisation. Criticised by Marxists for ignoring conflict.’ This discipline builds the evaluative muscle you will need for high‑mark responses.

11. Building a Sociological Vocabulary: Essential Terms Glossary |

A precise sociological vocabulary allows you to express complex ideas concisely. Start a glossary now and add to it throughout your course. Early adoption of these terms will improve your writing and AO1 marks enormously. Below are foundational terms you must be comfortable with before September.

  • Norms — socially acceptable standards of behaviour.
  • Values — deeply held beliefs about what is desirable and good.
  • Status — social position, which may be ascribed or achieved.
  • Role — patterns of behaviour expected of a person occupying a given status.
  • Culture — the way of life of a society, including beliefs, artefacts, and practices.
  • Socialisation — the process of learning culture and internalising norms.
  • Identity — how individuals see themselves and are seen by others.
  • Institution — a stable, organised set of relationships and practices, e.g. family, education.
  • Power — the ability to impose one’s will on others, even against resistance.
  • Stratification — the hierarchical arrangement of social groups based on unequal resources.

12. Summer Tasks and Recommended Reading: Get Ahead Before September |

To consolidate this bridging work and develop the skills that top performers demonstrate, complete the following three tasks over the summer break. Record your thoughts in a designated sociology notebook — this will become an invaluable resource for revision.

Task 1 — Sociological Observation: Spend 30 minutes in a public space (a park, shopping centre, or café) observing interactions. Note patterns of gender, age, or ethnicity in how people use space, dress, and communicate. Then write a short reflection linking your observation to the concepts of norms, status, and non‑verbal communication. Ask yourself: what norms were being followed? Did any behaviour challenge conventional expectations? This exercise trains you in unstructured observation, a key qualitative method.

Task 2 — Media Analysis: Choose one recent news story related to education or the family. Identify which sociological perspective(s) the article implicitly or explicitly draws upon. Does it blame individuals for outcomes (individualistic explanation) or point to structural causes? Write three paragraphs: a summary, a theoretical analysis, and an evaluation of what the article might miss. Remember to reference the PET framework — are there practical or ethical issues in the data reported?
