1. Introduction to SQA Higher Art and Design | SQA

SQA Higher Art and Design encourages creative expression, independent research and critical analysis. The qualification is made up of two internally assessed folios and an externally marked question paper. Success depends not only on technical ability but also on your capacity to develop personal ideas, reflect on your work and make connections with the wider art world.

This summer bridge programme focuses on the foundational habits you can build now. Rather than waiting until term starts, you can begin filling your sketchbook, experimenting with media and shaping the themes that may drive your folio work.

2. Understanding the Course Structure |

The Higher Art and Design course is structured around three components. Getting familiar with the weightings and expectations early helps you plan your time effectively.

Component Marks Description
Expressive Folio 100 A body of practical artwork showing development and final expressive pieces.
Design Folio 100 Design process from a given brief, including research, development and a final solution.
Question Paper 60 Critical analysis of artworks and designs, comparing two works in an extended response.

Both folios require you to demonstrate a journey: initial sources, experimentation, selection and refinement, leading to resolved outcomes. The question paper tests your visual literacy and ability to use subject-specific vocabulary.

3. Expressive Folio: Drawing and Painting |

The Expressive Folio is an opportunity to showcase your personal voice through a sustained investigation of a theme. You will produce a collection of developmental studies and at least two finished pieces. Themes often stem from still life, portraiture, figure composition or landscape.

Over the summer, start by gathering primary sources. Draw directly from life: arrange objects on your desk, sketch family members or capture the light in your local park. Avoid relying on photographs alone; direct observation trains your eye and hand in a way that copying photos cannot.

4. Design Folio: Research and Development |

The Design Folio centres on problem-solving. You will respond to a design brief, following a structured process: analysing the brief, researching target audiences and existing products, generating ideas, experimenting with materials, developing a solution and evaluating the outcome. This could involve graphic design, product design, fashion or architecture.

During the summer, train your designer’s eye. Look critically at everyday objects and ask why they look the way they do. Collect images of innovative designs, record your thoughts in your sketchbook and start practising quick ideation sketches. Even redrawing a well-designed chair can teach you proportion and function.

5. Art & Design Studies: Critical Analysis |

The Question Paper requires you to write about two works of art or design you have studied, comparing their visual elements, contexts and meanings. You will need to use specialist terminology to discuss composition, colour, form, technique and mood.

Build a strong foundation now by selecting two artists or designers who excite you. Look beyond surface appearance: research their influences, the historical period and the materials they used. Make annotated pages in your sketchbook that combine visual reproductions with your own critical commentary. Museums’ virtual collections are an excellent resource for summer study.

6. Building a Visual Vocabulary |

A shared language helps you describe, analyse and create art with precision. The formal elements are the basic building blocks: line, tone, colour, texture, shape, form, pattern and space. For design, you may also discuss balance, contrast, rhythm and unity.

Use your summer sketchbook to deliberately explore each element. Devote a page to line variations, another to tone scales, and create small studies that emphasise texture. When you write about artworks, apply these terms naturally. This habit will directly improve your written exam responses and help you make more conscious creative decisions.

7. Sketchbook Practice Over Summer |

Your sketchbook is the engine of your art practice. Treat it as a visual diary, a laboratory and a thinking space. The most successful Higher students fill their sketchbooks with daily observations, media tests and reflections, not just finished drawings.

Set a realistic goal, such as two pages a day or twenty minutes of sustained drawing. Use a mix of quick gestural sketches and more sustained studies. Glue in fabric swatches, colour palettes, magazine cuttings and written notes. The goal is to generate a rich bank of visual material you can draw upon when the course intensifies.

8. Developing Observational Drawing Skills |

Observational drawing is the single most valuable skill you can strengthen over the summer. It teaches you to see proportion, negative space, light and shadow firsthand. The SQA moderators look for evidence of direct engagement with the visible world, not just photographs.

Set up small still life arrangements using everyday objects like fruit, crumpled fabric or glassware. Draw from a window view, capturing changing light. Focus on accuracy before speed, and experiment with viewfinders to strengthen composition. Each drawing builds your confidence for the expressive folio and refines the hand-eye coordination essential for design work.

9. Exploring Media and Techniques |

Higher Art expects you to demonstrate control and sensitivity across a range of materials. Summer is the perfect low-stakes environment to expand your toolkit. Move beyond a single pencil grade: try charcoal, conte, pen and ink, watercolour, acrylics, collage and even digital drawing.

Create a media exploration page in your sketchbook for each material. Make notes on how the medium handles, its drying time, opacity and how it layers. Understanding these properties will help you choose the right medium for the idea you want to communicate. This exploration also generates valuable evidence for your folio development.

10. Researching Artists and Designers |

An in-depth artist or designer research project is a powerful bridge between National 5 and Higher. At Higher level, you are expected to move beyond simple facts and analyse the visual language, context and intention behind the work.

Choose at least two practitioners whose work resonates with your summer investigations. Produce double-page spreads that include high-quality reproductions, your own visual responses in the style of the artist, and critical analysis using the formal elements. Write about what the work makes you feel and why. This will become the core of your exam preparation and can be adapted for your question paper evidence.

11. Time Management and Planning |

The Higher Art and Design course moves quickly. In school, you will need to balance studio time, research, written work and other subjects. By planning your summer weeks now, you can arrive in class with momentum and a head start.

Create a simple weekly timetable that blocks out time for observational drawing, media experiments, artist research and rest. Set mini-deadlines, such as finishing a concertina sketchbook or completing a series of tone studies. Gather your materials early—quality sketchbooks, a range of pencils and a portable watercolour set can make a real difference.

12. Bridging from National 5 to Higher | 从 National 5 到 Higher 的衔接

The step up from National 5 to Higher is about depth, independence and criticality. At Higher, you must make and justify your own creative decisions, sustain an idea across many weeks, and write analytically about art, not just describe it. You are the driver of your project.

Use this summer to practise taking ownership. Ask ‘why’ after every sketch, experiment and piece of research. Push your sketchbook beyond a collection of drawings into a record of thinking. When you return to school, you will not only be technically stronger but also intellectually more prepared to handle the rigour of the Higher course.
