Whether you are exploring education, families, or socialisation, the skills you develop here will help you structure high-band responses and demonstrate a deep sociological understanding.

1. What is a Sociological Case Study? |

A sociological case study is an in-depth, detailed examination of a specific social unit – such as a school, family, peer group, or neighbourhood – within its real-life context. Unlike surveys or large-scale statistics, case studies gather rich qualitative and quantitative data to reveal the complexities of social processes and interactions.

In WJEC exams, the ‘case study’ is often a condensed paragraph or two describing a real or fictional scenario. Your task is not to memorise the case but to use it as a springboard for sociological reasoning – linking the details to theories, key concepts, and methodological insights.

For example, a case study about a school with low attainment may invite you to discuss material deprivation, cultural capital, labelling, or the self-fulfilling prophecy. The same text can also be used to evaluate the strengths and limitations of using case studies as a research method.

2. The Purpose of Case Studies in WJEC Sociology | 案例分析在WJEC社会学中的目的

Case study questions in the WJEC specification are designed to assess your ability to apply knowledge, not just recall it. Examiners want to see that you can identify social patterns, recognise the influence of structures and agency, and build a coherent argument supported by evidence from the case.

Specifically, case studies help you demonstrate three core assessment objectives: AO1 (knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, and evidence), AO2 (application of this knowledge to a novel context), and AO3 (analysis and evaluation). By weaving the case material into your answers, you show that you can move beyond textbook definitions.

具体来说,案例研究帮助你展示三个核心评估目标:AO1(对社会学理论、概念和证据的认知与理解),AO2(将这些知识应用于新颖情境),以及AO3(分析与评价)。

A common exam command might be: ‘Using the case study, analyse two ways in which social class affects educational achievement.’ Here, the case provides concrete examples – such as free school meal eligibility or parental occupation – which you must explicitly reference to secure application marks.

3. Key Sociological Perspectives for Case Analysis |

To analyse any case study effectively, you need to view it through different theoretical lenses. The main perspectives required at Year 12 are functionalism, Marxism, feminism, and interactionism. Each offers a distinct explanation for the social phenomena described.

English Perspective & Core Idea
Functionalism: Society is a system of interconnected parts that work together to maintain stability. Case studies of education might focus on meritocracy, role allocation, and the functions of institutions.
Marxism: Society is based on class conflict; institutions reproduce inequality. A case study would highlight the hidden curriculum, correspondence principle, and material/cultural deprivation.
Feminism: Focuses on patriarchy and gender inequalities. A case study could examine gendered subject choices, teacher attention, or the reinforcement of gender norms.
Interactionism: Emphasises micro-level interactions and meanings. Case studies allow exploration of labelling, self-fulfilling prophecy, and pupil subcultures.

When faced with a case, ask yourself: what would a functionalist say about the situation? How would a Marxist critique the inequalities evident in the text? Would an interactionist focus on specific interactions or labels? This mental checklist ensures you avoid a one-sided analysis.

4. Linking Case Studies to Key Concepts |

Your answer must be grounded in sociological vocabulary. WJEC expects you to use terms like cultural capital, material deprivation, self-fulfilling prophecy, patriarchy, meritocracy, hidden curriculum, and many more. The case study is your opportunity to show how these concepts ‘come alive’.

For example, if a case mentions that working-class parents feel uncomfortable attending parents’ evening, you can link this to cultural capital: these parents may lack the confidence and knowledge to navigate the education system – a form of middle-class cultural advantage that working-class families are denied.

Similarly, if a case describes a school setting lower targets for students on free school meals, you can discuss labelling and the self-fulfilling prophecy. Always quote a short phrase from the case to anchor your concept – this signals strong application.

5. Research Methods and Case Studies |

Beyond applying theories, you may be asked to evaluate the case study as a research method. The WJEC component on methods of sociological enquiry requires you to know the strengths and limitations of case studies, and you can illustrate these by referring to the given material.

Strengths of case studies include their high validity – they provide a rich, in-depth picture of social reality, often using multiple sources (interviews, observations, documents). They are particularly useful for studying sensitive or complex issues that large-scale surveys cannot capture. For instance, a case study of a single school can reveal the subtle dynamics of teacher-pupil relationships that official statistics miss.

However, limitations must also be acknowledged: case studies lack representativeness and generalisability because they focus on one small unit. The researcher’s presence may influence the behaviour of participants (Hawthorne effect), and the findings may be subjective. A case study presented in an exam may also be a brief, oversimplified summary, which limits how deeply you can analyse its methodology – but you should still comment on these issues.

6. How to Deconstruct a Case Study Text |

When you first read a case study in the exam, avoid rushing into writing. Spend two to three minutes actively deconstructing the text. Underline or circle any phrases that indicate social class, gender, ethnicity, educational policies, parental attitudes, teacher behaviour, or institutional practices.

Create a quick mental map: ‘This case talks about a deprived urban school with many free school meal pupils, low results, and a recent mentoring programme that had limited impact.’ Then list the sociological themes: material deprivation, cultural deprivation, labelling, policy evaluation (compensatory education), and perhaps research methods (was the mentoring scheme properly evaluated?).

A useful structure is to annotate the text with the letters T (theory), C (concept), M (method), and P (policy) as you spot relevant hooks. This transforms the case from a simple description into a scaffold for your answer.

7. Step-by-Step Analysis: A Sample Case |

Below is a typical WJEC-style case study. Let’s work through it together. Read the text carefully, then follow the analysis steps.

Case Study: “Greenfield Academy is an inner-city secondary school in an area of high unemployment. 52% of its students are eligible for free school meals, well above the national average. Last year, only 30% of Year 11 pupils achieved a strong pass (grade 5 or above) in both English and Maths, compared with 48% nationally. The school’s Ofsted report noted that many students have low aspirations and that their parents rarely attend consultation evenings. In response, the school introduced a ‘Future Leaders’ mentoring scheme, pairing students with local business volunteers for one hour per week. After 18 months, the GCSE pass rate increased by just one percentage point. Some teachers report that the scheme is not reaching the most disengaged students.”

Step 1 – Identify Social Structures: The case study immediately points to social class and material deprivation. High free school meal eligibility is a proxy for low household income. Unemployment in the area suggests economic capital is low. This sets the context for understanding educational inequality through Marxist or material deprivation lenses.

Step 2 – Apply Cultural Factors: Phrases like ‘low aspirations’ and ‘parents rarely attend consultation evenings’ invite a discussion of cultural deprivation and cultural capital. Working-class parents may feel alienated from the middle-class culture of schools, lacking the skills and confidence to engage. This can be linked to Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital and Bernstein’s language codes.

Step 3 – Evaluate Educational Policy: The ‘Future Leaders’ mentoring scheme is an example of a compensatory education policy, aimed at raising aspirations. Its limited impact (one percentage point gain) allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of such policies. You could argue that it fails to address structural barriers like poverty and underfunding. This links to the debate between cultural and material solutions.

Step 4 – Use Interactionism: Teachers’ comment that the scheme is not reaching the most disengaged students hints at labelling and differentiation. The school may inadvertently label some students as ‘disengaged’ and fail to include them, reinforcing their marginalisation. This is a perfect opportunity to discuss self-fulfilling prophecy.

Step 5 – Weave in Research Methods: The case uses Ofsted reports and statistics; it’s essentially a brief case study itself. You could question the validity of ‘low aspirations’ as evidence – how was it measured? Was it based on teacher perceptions? This methodological scepticism will elevate your answer.

8. Structuring Your Written Response |

A high-mark answer follows a clear, logical structure. A recommended format for a typical 15-mark case study question is: a short opening paragraph that identifies the key sociological issues; two or three detailed analysis paragraphs, each employing a different perspective or concept and explicitly referencing the case; and a final evaluative paragraph that weighs up the explanations and acknowledges complexity.

Each analysis paragraph should follow the PEEL chain: Point, Evidence (from the case), Explanation (using sociological theory/concept), and Link back to the question. For instance: ‘One explanation for the low attainment at Greenfield Academy is material deprivation (Point). The case reveals that 52% of students are on free school meals, indicating low household income (Evidence). According to Marxist sociologists, a lack of financial resources prevents students from affording private tuition, adequate study space, or nutritious food, which directly impacts their cognitive development and concentration in school (Explanation). This suggests that educational failure is rooted in economic inequality rather than individual motivation (Link).’

Your final evaluation should not just summarise. Instead, it should discuss the relative importance of factors, identify which perspective offers the most convincing explanation, or note the limitations of the case study evidence. You might say: ‘While material factors are powerful, interactionist processes like teacher labelling may explain why the mentoring scheme failed to engage some students. The case study’s brief nature, however, limits our ability to fully assess these micro-processes.’

9. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误与避免方法

Pitfall 1: Merely summarising the case study instead of analysing it. Avoid phrases like ‘The case study says that…’ without adding sociological meaning. Every time you mention a case detail, ask yourself ‘So what?’ and link it to a concept or theory.

Pitfall 2: Throwing in theories without tailoring them to the case. Do not simply write a pre-prepared paragraph on Marxism. Instead, extract specific phrases from the case that a Marxist would focus on – such as ‘high unemployment’ or ‘free school meals’ – and build your argument around those.

Pitfall 3: Ignoring the evaluative dimension. Many Year 12 students stop at explanation. To reach the top bands, you must evaluate: compare perspectives, note the strengths and limitations of the case evidence, and discuss whether the factors identified are structural or interactional, internal or external to the school.

Pitfall 4: Using emotional or journalistic language. Sociology is a social science. Use precise terminology (‘material deprivation’, ‘cultural capital’, ‘hidden curriculum’) rather than vague terms like ‘disadvantaged’ or ‘unfair’. Precision demonstrates AO1 knowledge.

10. Practice Exercise: Test Your Skills |

Now it is your turn. Read the case study below and plan an answer to the question that follows. Try to use at least two perspectives, three key concepts, and an evaluative conclusion. The model points provided will help you check your thinking.

Practice Case: “Parkview Sixth Form College serves a diverse, suburban catchment. 30% of students come from minority ethnic backgrounds. Whilst the college’s overall A-Level pass rate is 98%, data reveals that students of Black Caribbean heritage are twice as likely to be placed in lower-tier GCSE resit classes compared to their White British peers. The college runs an ‘Equality and Ambition’ programme, which includes cultural awareness training for teachers and a student voice council. However, a recent internal review found that Black Caribbean students still report feeling less supported and more likely to be subject to harsh behaviour sanctions.”

Question: Using the case study, analyse two ways in which ethnicity may affect educational experience. [15 marks]

Quick-Glance Model Points: One way is through institutional racism and labelling: the disproportionate placement in lower-tier classes suggests that teachers may operate with unconscious stereotypes about Black Caribbean students’ abilities (interactionism). A second way is through the experience of sanctions and support, which can be linked to the concept of the ethnocentric curriculum or ‘habitus’ – the school’s culture may inadvertently favour White British norms, leaving some students feeling alienated despite the college’s formal equality policies (functionalism/conflict). Your evaluation could discuss whether training programmes genuinely tackle deep-seated structural inequalities or are merely tokenistic.
