1. The Origins of the Cold War: Yalta to Potsdam |

The Yalta Conference of February 1945 was marked by apparent cooperation: the Big Three agreed on the division of Germany into occupation zones and on the promise of democratic elections in liberated Europe. Yet Stalin’s insistence on a “friendly government” in Poland planted the seeds of future discord, as his definition of friendship meant Soviet domination.

At Potsdam (July 1945), new US President Harry S. Truman adopted a far more confrontational tone. Disputes over the Oder–Neisse line as Poland’s western border and over heavy reparations from Germany brought the alliance to breaking point. The successful test of the atomic bomb, which Truman mentioned obliquely, deepened Soviet suspicions and accelerated the arms race mentality.

Long-term ideological antagonism – capitalist democracy versus one-party communism – also drove the rivalry. Western leaders feared a domino effect of Soviet expansion, while the USSR perceived encirclement by a hostile capitalist world. These fears were crystallised in Kennan’s Long Telegram and Churchill’s “Iron Curtain” speech at Fulton, Missouri, in March 1946.

2. Stalin’s Consolidation of Eastern Europe |

By 1948 the USSR had established compliant communist regimes across almost the whole of Eastern Europe. Stalin used a blend of manipulated elections, police intimidation and the stationing of Red Army troops to create a buffer zone. The chief satellite states included Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and, slightly later, East Germany.

The Cominform (1947) was created to coordinate the activities of communist parties under Moscow’s strict direction, while Comecon (1949) bound the satellite economies to the Soviet Union, denying them the benefits of the Marshall Plan. The Czechoslovak coup of February 1948, in which a non-communist government was overthrown, became a chilling demonstration of Moscow’s methods and convinced the West that Stalin could not be trusted.

3. The Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan |

In March 1947, President Truman addressed Congress and declared that “it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.” This Truman Doctrine was initially applied to Greece and Turkey, where communist insurgencies threatened Western interests, and it signalled an open-ended American commitment to containment.

The European Recovery Programme, popularly known as the Marshall Plan, channelled over $13 billion in aid to Western Europe between 1948 and 1952. It helped revive shattered economies, boost morale and reduce the appeal of communism. Stalin, however, interpreted the plan as a tool of American economic imperialism and forced all Eastern Bloc countries to reject the aid, thereby hardening Europe’s division.

4. The Berlin Blockade and Airlift (1948–49) |

In June 1948, Stalin blocked all road, rail and canal access to the Western sectors of Berlin in an attempt to force the Allies out. The Western powers responded not with tanks but with an unprecedented airlift, flying in food, coal and other essentials. For nearly eleven months, planes landed at Tempelhof Airport every few minutes, sustaining over two million West Berliners.

Stalin lifted the blockade in May 1949, having failed to achieve his objective.
