1. Course Structure and Exam Breakdown |
The OCR A Level Accounting course (H411) is assessed through two three-hour written examinations at the end of Year 13. Component 01: Financial Accounting requires you to prepare and interpret financial statements for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies, including manufacturing accounts and cash flow statements. Component 02: Management Accounting covers costing systems, budgeting, standard costing and variance analysis, along with investment appraisal and decision-making techniques. Both papers contain a mix of computational questions and extended written responses, demanding accuracy, analytical reasoning, and the ability to evaluate financial information.
2. Incomplete Records and Single Entry |
Many small businesses do not maintain full double-entry systems. In such cases, profit or loss must be derived by constructing a statement of affairs to calculate the opening and closing capital. The accounting equation (Assets – Liabilities = Capital) is used to determine the net worth at two points in time. By adjusting for drawings and capital introduced, you can compute the profit for the period. Mark-up and margin ratios often help to estimate missing sales or cost of sales figures when records are incomplete.
- Statement of affairs is a snapshot of assets and liabilities, similar to a statement of financial position but prepared from available information rather than ledger balances.
- Using control accounts to reconstruct missing figures for debtors, creditors, and cash.
- Gross profit ratio: Mark-up = Gross profit ÷ Cost of sales; Margin = Gross profit ÷ Sales.
3. Partnership Accounts: Appropriation and Changes |
A partnership appropriation account shows how net profit is divided among partners after interest on drawings, interest on capital, and partners’ salaries have been accounted for. The remaining residual profit or loss is shared according to the profit-sharing ratio. When a new partner is admitted or an existing partner retires, the partnership must revalue assets and account for goodwill. These changes often require adjustments to partners’ capital and current accounts, and you must be able to record the necessary journal entries and ledger accounts.
- Appropriation account entries: interest on capital (credit partner’s current account), interest on drawings (debit partner’s current account), profit share (split per ratio).
- Revaluation account records unrealised gains or losses on asset revaluation, then allocates to partners’ capital accounts.
- Goodwill: when a partner joins or leaves, internally generated goodwill is written out of the books by adjusting capital accounts in the old profit-sharing ratio, then written back in the new ratio if required.
4. Partnership Dissolution |
Dissolution occurs when the partnership ceases trading. A realisation account is opened to transfer all assets (except cash/bank) and liabilities. Any proceeds from the sale of assets are debited to bank and credited to the realisation account. After settling dissolution costs and liabilities, the balance on realisation represents a profit or loss which is shared among partners in their profit-sharing ratio. Finally, the bank and capital accounts are closed, and any cash surplus is distributed to partners according to their final capital balances.
Realisation profit/loss = (Sale proceeds of assets + Liabilities taken over) – (Book value of assets + Dissolution expenses)
5. Limited Company Shares and Debentures |
Limited companies raise finance by issuing shares and debentures. Ordinary shares carry voting rights and a variable dividend; preference shares typically offer a fixed dividend with priority over ordinary shareholders. When shares are issued at a price above nominal value, the excess is credited to a share premium account, which can be used for specific purposes such as issuing bonus shares. Debentures are long-term loans evidenced by a certificate, and debenture interest is a charge against profit before dividends. You must be able to journalise the issue and record the effects on the statement of financial position.
| Transaction | Journal entries |
| Issue of ordinary shares at par | Dr Bank, Cr Ordinary share capital |
| Issue at premium | Dr Bank, Cr Ordinary share capital, Cr Share premium |
| Bonus issue | Dr Share premium/Retained earnings, Cr Ordinary share capital |
| Rights issue | Dr Bank, Cr Ordinary share capital (+ Share premium if > nominal) |
6. Published Financial Statements for Companies |
Limited companies are required to prepare financial statements in accordance with IAS 1 Presentation of Financial Statements. The statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income shows revenue, cost of sales, distribution costs, administrative expenses, finance costs, and tax. The statement of financial position presents non-current assets, current assets, equity, non-current liabilities, and current liabilities in a classified format. You must also be able to prepare a statement of changes in equity and understand the required notes, such as accounting policies and property, plant and equipment schedules. Goodwill, research and development, and revaluations may appear depending on the scenario.
7. Statement of Cash Flows (IAS 7) | 现金流量表(IAS 7)
The statement of cash flows explains the change in cash and cash equivalents during a period, divided into operating, investing, and financing activities. OCR uses the indirect method for operating activities, which starts with profit before tax and adjusts for non-cash items, changes in working capital, and tax paid. Investing activities include the purchase and sale of non-current assets; financing activities involve proceeds from issuing shares or debentures and repayments of borrowings. You need to be able to derive cash inflows and outflows from the information in two statements of financial position and the income statement.
Cash generated from operations = Profit before tax + Depreciation – Gain on disposal +/- Changes in inventory, receivables, payables
8. Ratio Analysis and Interpretation |
Ratio analysis transforms the financial statements into meaningful metrics for stakeholders. Profitability ratios (gross margin, operating margin, return on capital employed) assess earning performance. Liquidity ratios (current ratio, acid test) evaluate short-term solvency. Efficiency ratios (inventory turnover, trade receivables days, trade payables days) examine how well resources are managed. Gearing and interest cover indicate long-term financial structure and risk. For limited companies, you also calculate earnings per share and dividend cover. You must not only compute these ratios accurately but also interpret trends, compare with benchmarks, and discuss limitations.
- ROCE (Return on Capital Employed) = Operating profit ÷ (Total equity + Non-current liabilities). It measures how efficiently a company uses its long-term capital.
- Gearing ratio = Non-current liabilities ÷ Total equity + non-current liabilities (or using debt/equity). High gearing increases financial risk.
- EPS (Earnings Per Share) = Profit after tax and preference dividends ÷ Weighted average number of ordinary shares.
9. Manufacturing Accounts |
A manufacturing account is prepared to calculate the cost of goods manufactured, which is then transferred to the trading section of the income statement. It starts with the raw materials inventory, adds purchases and carriage inwards, and deducts closing raw material inventory to obtain the cost of raw materials consumed. Direct labour and direct expenses are added to arrive at Prime Cost. Factory overheads (indirect materials, indirect labour, factory rent, depreciation of plant) are then included, adjusting for opening and closing work-in-progress to compute the factory cost of finished goods produced.
Prime Cost = Direct materials consumed + Direct labour + Direct expenses
Cost of goods manufactured = Prime cost + Factory overheads + Opening WIP – Closing WIP
10. Marginal and Absorption Costing |
These two costing methods treat fixed manufacturing overheads differently. In marginal costing, only variable production costs are charged to product cost, and fixed production overheads are treated as period costs written off against contribution. In absorption costing, all production costs-variable and fixed-are absorbed into product costs, often using an overhead absorption rate based on labour hours or machine hours. Consequently, profit under the two methods will differ whenever there is a change in inventory levels. You must prepare profit statements using both methods and reconcile the difference.
Absorption costing profit adjustment = (Fixed OAR × Change in inventory units)
Break-even point (units) = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price per unit – Variable cost per unit)
11. Standard Costing and Variance Analysis |
A standard cost is a predetermined cost of one unit of output. Variance analysis compares actual performance against the standard, enabling management to control operations. You need to compute material variances (price and usage), labour variances (rate and efficiency), variable overhead variances (expenditure and efficiency), and fixed overhead variances (expenditure and volume). Sales variances can be calculated based on margins. The reconciliation of budgeted and actual profit brings all these variances together. Where necessary, you should sub-analyse the volume variance into capacity and efficiency components.
Material price variance = (Standard price – Actual price) × Actual quantity purchased
Material usage variance = (Standard quantity for actual output – Actual quantity used) × Standard price
12. Budgeting and Investment Appraisal |
Budgets are financial plans that coordinate resources and provide a basis for control. Cash budgets forecast liquidity, ensuring the business can meet its obligations. The principal budget factor limits the organisation’s activities, and you must demonstrate how to prepare subsidiary budgets such as production, material purchases, and labour budgets from a sales budget. Investment appraisal techniques help evaluate long-term projects: Payback period measures risk and liquidity; accounting rate of return (ARR) shows profitability as a percentage of investment; net
