Year 13 OCR Art: Essential Vocabulary Quick-Memorisation Guide | OCR 13

📚 Year 13 OCR Art: Essential Vocabulary Quick-Memorisation Guide | OCR 13

In Year 13 of the OCR Art and Design course, your ability to discuss, analyse and write about your own work and that of others hinges on a robust art vocabulary. This guide breaks down key terminology into digestible chunks, offering memory hooks and visual cues to help you retain and apply these terms effectively in your Personal Investigation and the externally set assignment.

1. Formal Elements |

Line – Imagine a single dot moving across a page. Lines can be thick, thin, dashed, or continuous; they define edges and suggest movement. Memory tip: ‘Line defines limits’.

Shape – A two-dimensional enclosed area, such as a circle or triangle. Geometric shapes are precise; organic shapes are irregular. Think: ‘Shape is flat like a map’.

Form – A three-dimensional object with volume and depth, like a sphere or cube. In drawing, shading creates the illusion of form. Remember: ‘Form feels full; shape is shallow’.

Tone – The lightness or darkness of a colour. It adds drama, mood and volume. Quick link: ‘Tone sets the tone’.

Texture – The surface quality, either actual (you can feel) or implied (visual trick). Recall by thinking: ‘Texture touches’.

Pattern – Repetition of an element, such as a motif, to create rhythm. Visual cue: wallpapers, fabric prints or natural repetitions.

Colour – Derived from light, described by hue, value and intensity. It will be explored in detail in the colour theory section. For now, link it with emotion: ‘Colour communicates’.

Space – The area around, between, or within objects. Positive space is the subject; negative space is the background. Think of the classic vase/two faces illusion.

2. Principles of Design |

Balance – Distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance is mirror-like; asymmetrical balance uses unequal elements to achieve equilibrium. Memory: ‘Balance beam’.

Contrast – Juxtaposing opposites (light/dark, rough/smooth, large/small) to create visual interest. Think: ‘Contrast catches the eye’.

Emphasis – A focal point that draws attention. The rule of thirds is often used to position the emphasis. ‘Emphasis equals spotlight’.

Movement – The path the viewer’s eye follows through the composition, created by leading lines, repetition or implied action. ‘Movement guides gaze’.

Rhythm – Regular repetition of elements to establish a visual tempo. Like beats in music. ‘Rhythm is visual beat’.

Unity – The sense of harmony and wholeness; all parts feel cohesive. A work can achieve unity through colour, style or theme. ‘Unity feels complete’.

Variety – Using differences to avoid monotony and maintain interest. ‘Variety adds spice’.

Proportion – Size relationships between parts and the whole. Canon of proportions in figure drawing is a famous example. ‘Proportion compares parts’.

3. Colour Theory |

Hue – The pure colour itself (red, blue, yellow). It is the base name we give to a colour family. ‘Hue = who’s who in colour’.

Value – The lightness or darkness of a colour. Adding white creates a tint; adding black creates a shade. ‘Value = light level’.

Saturation / Chroma – The intensity or purity of a colour. High saturation is vivid; low saturation is dull or muted. ‘Saturation = colour strength’.

Complementary Colours – Pairs opposite each other on the colour wheel (e.g. red & green). Placed together, they intensify each other. ‘Complementary couples clash vividly’.

Analogous Colours – Colours adjacent on the wheel (e.g. blue, blue-green, green). They create harmony and are often seen in nature. ‘Analogous neighbours feel calm’.

Warm & Cool Colours – Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) advance and evoke energy; cool colours (blue, green, purple) recede and suggest calm. ‘Warm pops forward, cool drops back’.

The table below provides a quick-reference for colour harmonies you must be able to discuss in your annotation.
