This handbook collects the essential ‘formulas and theorems’ of IGCSE CCEA Art — from the elements and principles of design to colour theory, perspective and composition — all presented as concise, revision-ready references. Mastering these will equip you with the language and technique to excel in your portfolio and externally set assignment.
1. The Elements of Art |
The elements of art are the basic building blocks used to create any visual piece. They include line, shape, form, space, colour, value and texture. Every artwork can be broken down into these seven fundamental components, much like a chemical compound can be analysed into its elements.
Line is a mark with length and direction; it can be straight, curved, thick, thin, dotted or continuous. Shape is two-dimensional and can be geometric or organic. Form has three dimensions — height, width and depth — and can be represented in 2D through shading. Space refers to the area around, between or within objects, divided into positive space (the subject) and negative space (the background). Colour is produced by light reflecting off surfaces and has three properties: hue, value and intensity. Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour or tone. Texture is the surface quality, either real (tactile) or implied (visual).
2. The Principles of Design |
The principles of design are the ‘theorems’ that govern how the elements are organised. They include balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm and unity/variety. Applying these principles effectively turns a random arrangement of elements into a cohesive visual statement.
Balance is the distribution of visual weight, which can be symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical (informal) or radial. Contrast creates excitement by juxtaposing opposites, such as light and dark, rough and smooth. Emphasis draws the viewer’s attention to a focal point, often through isolation, placement or contrast. Movement guides the eye through the artwork, using directional lines or repeating elements. Pattern is the repetition of a motif in a predictable manner. Rhythm is created by regular repetition with variation — like a visual beat. Unity is the sense of harmony and wholeness, while variety prevents monotony by introducing differences.
3. Colour Theory Fundamentals |
Colour theory provides a systematic framework for mixing and combining colours. Its ‘formulae’ explain how hues relate to each other. Understanding these relationships allows you to make deliberate, emotive colour choices in your art.
The three primary colours — red, yellow and blue — cannot be created by mixing other pigments. Secondary colours — orange, green and violet — are made by mixing two primaries. Tertiary colours result from mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary, giving hues like red-orange or blue-green. Hue is the name of a colour; value is its lightness or darkness (tint = hue + white, shade = hue + black); intensity (or saturation) is its purity or brightness.
Primary + Primary = Secondary; Primary + Secondary = Tertiary
4. The Colour Wheel & Harmonies |
The colour wheel is a visual map of hue relationships, typically arranged in a 12-part circle. Colour ‘harmonies’ are proven combinations that create pleasing visual effects. They are like ready-made recipes for balancing colour.
|---|---|
| Complementary 互补 | Opposite colours on the wheel, e.g. red & green. High contrast. |
| Analogous 类似 | Colours next to each other, e.g. blue, blue-green, green. Harmonious, calm. |
| Triadic 三角 | Three colours evenly spaced, e.g. red, yellow, blue. Vibrant but balanced. |
| Split-Complementary 分裂互补 | Base colour + two colours adjacent to its complement. Less tension than straight complementary. |
Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) advance and evoke energy; cool colours (blue, green, violet) recede and suggest calm. Use these ‘formulas’ to control mood and spatial depth.
5. Perspective Drawing Rules |
Perspective is a mathematical-like system for creating the illusion of depth on a flat surface. The core rule: parallel lines appear to converge at a vanishing point on the horizon line as they recede into the distance.
One-point perspective uses a single vanishing point and is ideal for views facing a flat surface, such as a corridor or a road stretching away. Two-point perspective uses two vanishing points on the horizon, typically for showing objects at an angle, like a corner of a building. Atmospheric (aerial) perspective states that distant objects appear lighter, less detailed and bluer due to atmospheric particles scattering light. Overlap, size variation and placement on the picture plane are additional simple ‘formulas’ for depth.
Horizon Line + Vanishing Point(s) + Converging Lines = Illusion of Depth
6. Composition Formulas |
Composition is the arrangement of elements within the picture frame. Successful compositions often follow tried-and-tested ‘formulas’ that guide the viewer’s eye and create a sense of order. The main compositional devices are the rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, symmetry and the golden ratio.
Leading lines are actual or implied lines that direct attention to the focal point — a winding path, a river, or a row of trees. Framing uses foreground elements to enclose the subject, adding depth and focus. Symmetrical compositions create formal balance, often associated with stability and calm. Dynamic tension can be introduced by deliberately breaking symmetry or tilting the horizon (Dutch angle). Each ‘formula’ can be used alone or combined.
7. The Rule of Thirds & Golden Ratio |
The rule of thirds is a fundamental compositional guideline. Imagine the picture plane divided into nine equal rectangles by two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing key elements along these lines or at their intersections creates a more engaging composition than centring the subject.
The golden ratio (approx. 1:1.618) is a mathematical proportion found in nature and classical art. In composition, it can be applied as a golden spiral or golden rectangle to determine placement and flow. Many artists and designers use a simplified version — a 3:5 or 5:8 ratio. While not mandatory, awareness of this ‘divine formula’ can add a layer of visual sophistication.
Rule of Thirds: Place focal point at intersection ≈ 1/3 from edge
8. Shading & Tonal Values |
Value (tone) describes the lightness or darkness of a surface. A tonal value scale is a ‘formula’ that maps the gradual transition from pure white to pure black, usually in 5 to 10 steps. Mastering value is essential for creating the illusion of three-dimensional form.
The basic shading rule: highlight faces the light source; midtone is the object’s local colour value; core shadow is the darkest part on the object, away from reflected light; cast shadow is projected onto surrounding surfaces; reflected light bounces from nearby surfaces into the shadow. The transition between values can be sharp (cast shadow edge) or gradual (curved surface). Cross-hatching, stippling and blending are techniques to achieve smooth tonal gradations.
9. Texture & Mark-Making |
Texture is the perceived surface quality of an object. In art, it can be actual texture created by physical materials (impasto, collage) or implied texture rendered through marks on a flat surface. The ‘formula’ involves close observation and varying mark-making tools to simulate surface characteristics.
Common mark-making formulas: hatching (parallel lines) for smooth shading; cross-hatching for denser tone; stippling (dots) for fine textures like skin or sand; scumbling (controlled scribbles) for foliage or rough surfaces; sgraffito (scratching into a layer) for details. Repeating mark patterns can also create visual rhythm and texture. Experiment with unconventional tools — twigs, sponges, combs — to expand your texture vocabulary.
10. Art Analysis Framework (FORMAL) |
CCEA requires students to critically analyse artworks. A reliable ‘formula’ for doing this is the FORMAL framework: Form, Observation, Reaction, Meaning, Analysis, Link. It structures your thinking and annotation clearly.
|---|---|
| F – Form 形式 | Describe exactly what you see: media, scale, composition, elements. |
| O – Observation 观察 | Note use of line, colour, tone, texture, pattern. |
| R – Reaction 反应 | Record your emotional or sensory response. |
| M – Meaning 意义 | Interpret possible intentions, messages or themes. |
| A – Analysis 分析 | Explain how formal elements support meaning. |
| L – Link 联系 | Connect to context, other artists, your own work. |
Using this formula ensures your annotation is thorough and meets the assessment objective of demonstrating critical understanding.
11. CCEA Assessment Objectives (AOs) | CCEA
The CCEA IGCSE Art and Design curriculum is driven by four Assessment Objectives. Think of them as the ‘formulas for success’ that underpin every project and mark scheme. All your work should provide evidence for AOs 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Gather, record and develop observations from direct experience, memory or imagination. Document ideas through drawing, photography and annotation.
Critically analyse and experiment with a range of media, techniques and processes. Demonstrate risk-taking and refinement.
Develop ideas through sustained investigations, informed by contextual and other sources. Show progression from initial concepts to final outcomes.
Present a personal, informed and coherent final response that realises intentions and makes connections to visual and/or other references.
Each component is weighted equally, and all four AOs carry equal weight within a component. Internalise this formula: Record → Explore → Develop → Realise.
12. Annotation & Vocabulary Toolkit |
Effective annotation is not just description — it is a dialogue between you and your artwork. Use specialist vocabulary precisely, and follow this simple three-step formula: describe, explain, evaluate.
Describe what you have done and what materials you used. Explain why you made those choices — connect them to an artist reference, an experiment, or an intention. Evaluate how successful the outcome was and what you would change. Use strong art-specific verbs: ‘applied’, ‘layered’, ‘rendered’, ‘contrasted’, ‘blended’. Avoid weak language like ‘I like it’. Keep your written work concise but insightful; annotations are part of the visual evidence for AOs 1, 2 and 3.
Always link back to the formal elements and principles. For example: ‘The asymmetrical composition creates tension, reinforced by the high-contrast complementary palette of orange and blue.’ Such sentences demonstrate your command of the ‘formulas’ in this handbook.
