1. The Teleological (Design) Argument |

The Teleological Argument claims that the order, complexity, and apparent purpose in the natural world point to an intelligent designer – God. William Paley famously used the watchmaker analogy: if you found a watch on a heath, its intricate parts working together for a purpose would lead you to infer a watchmaker; likewise, the even greater complexity of living organisms implies a Divine Designer.

David Hume’s criticisms remain powerful: the analogy is weak because the universe is not sufficiently like a machine; an imperfect world suggests an imperfect designer, or even a team of designers; and the design argument does not prove the God of classical theism – it could equally support polytheism or a finite, mortal designer.

2. The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument seeks a first cause or necessary being to explain why anything exists at all. Thomas Aquinas presented the First Cause Argument (the ‘Uncaused Causer’) and the Argument from Contingency: everything in the universe is contingent (it depends on something else), so there must be a necessary being (God) which depends on nothing and on which all contingent things ultimately depend.

The Kalam version, developed by Islamic philosophers, argues that an actual infinite cannot exist in reality – so a beginning to the universe is inescapable, and that beginning requires a personal cause. Critics, including Hume and Bertrand Russell, point out that the argument commits the fallacy of composition (just because parts have a cause does not mean the whole does) and that ‘God’ is a bigger mystery than the universe itself.

3. The Ontological Argument |

Anselm’s Ontological Argument is an a priori argument that defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. If such a being exists only in the mind, it would be less great than if it existed in reality; therefore, to avoid contradiction, God must exist in reality. Anselm’s reasoning moves from the definition of God directly to God’s existence.

Gaunilo’s ‘Lost Island’ parody attempted to show that using Anselm’s logic we could prove the existence of a perfect island. Kant later criticised the argument by insisting that existence is not a predicate – ‘God exists’ does not add a property to the concept of God; it simply posits that the concept is instantiated. Nevertheless, the argument continues to fascinate modern philosophers like Alvin Plantinga, who reformulated it using possible worlds semantics.

4. The Problem of Evil and Suffering |

The logical problem of evil states that the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. If God can prevent evil but does not, He is not all‑loving; if He wants to but cannot, He is not all‑powerful. The evidential problem focuses on the sheer amount and distribution of pointless suffering, which makes God’s existence highly improbable.

Augustine’s theodicy turns evil into a privation – a lack of good – caused by the misuse of free will. All suffering is a consequence of original sin, and God is justified because He will redeem the elect. Irenaeus’ soul‑making theodicy, developed by John Hick, sees suffering as a necessary condition for moral and spiritual growth, allowing humans to develop into the likeness of God. Critics argue that such theodicies fail to justify the suffering of animals and innocent children.

5. Religious Experience as Evidence |

A religious experience is a subjective encounter with the divine. William James identified four characteristics: ineffability (cannot be fully described in words), noetic quality (the recipient gains deep insight), transiency (the experience is brief), and passivity (the person feels taken over by a higher power). Mystical experiences, conversion experiences, and corporate experiences all claim to provide direct awareness of God.

Critics such as Freud argue that religious experiences are psychological projections of a father figure, while others point out that conflicting experiences from different religions undermine their reliability. Nevertheless, for believers, the principle of credulity (Richard Swinburne) suggests we should trust what appears to be the case unless we have defeating evidence, making religious experience a legitimate basis for belief.

6. Life after Death: Dualism vs. Materialism | 死后的生命:二元论 vs 唯物主义

Belief in life after death often presupposes some form of dualism – that a person is a composite of a physical body and a non‑physical soul that can survive death. Plato argued for the immortality of the soul on the grounds that the soul is simple, non‑composite, and akin to the eternal Forms, whereas the body is corruptible.

Christianity envisages a resurrection of the body, not merely a disembodied soul. Materialist accounts, however, deny any separable soul: death is the cessation of brain function, and personhood is a set of capacities generated by the brain. Near‑death experiences are often cited by dualists as evidence, but materialists explain them as hallucinations caused by oxygen deprivation. The debate turns on whether consciousness can exist independently of the brain.

7. The Mind-Body Problem: Substance Dualism |

Substance dualism, most associated with René Descartes, holds that mind and body are two fundamentally different substances – the mind is non‑extended and thinking (res cogitans), while the body is extended and non‑thinking (res extensa). The interaction problem asks how an immaterial mind can cause physical changes in the body, and vice versa. Descartes proposed the pineal gland as the point of interaction, but this merely relocates the mystery.

Dualism captures the intuition that mental states seem utterly unlike physical states – the ‘what it is like’ to feel pain. However, modern neuroscience undermines dualism by showing that damage to specific brain areas destroys specific mental functions. The Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia famously challenged Descartes: how can a thought push a physical nerve? This objection remains a live issue.

8. Materialism and Functionalism |

Materialism (or physicalism) asserts that everything that exists is physical, and that mental states are identical to brain states. The mind‑brain identity theory claims that pain just is C‑fibre firing. Eliminative materialism goes further, arguing that our folk psychology of beliefs and desires will eventually be replaced by a completed neuroscience, just as we replaced talk of demons with talk of disease.

Functionalism offers a softer alternative: mental states are defined by their causal roles – what they do, not what they are made of. A pain is whatever state is typically caused by tissue damage and causes wincing and a desire to escape. Functionalism allows that a machine or an alien made of non‑biological stuff could have minds, provided it implements the right functional organisation. Critics worry that functionalism leaves out the qualitative feel (‘qualia’) of experience.

9. Free Will, Determinism, and Moral Responsibility |

Determinism claims that every event, including human actions, is necessitated by prior causes. Hard determinists argue that if determinism is true, we have no free will and thus cannot legitimately be held morally responsible – praise and blame become irrational. Libertarianism, in contrast, insists that we do have genuine free will, and that determinism is false: we are the originating causes of our actions, through a special kind of agent‑causation.

Compatibilism (soft determinism) tries to reconcile determinism with free will by redefining free will as the ability to act according to one’s desires without external coercion. For compatibilists like Hume, ‘free’ does not mean uncaused; it means uncoerced. Critics argue that this still leaves us as puppets of our upbringing and biology, which does not satisfy our intuition of being genuinely self‑determining.

10. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory: the moral worth of an action is determined solely by its consequences – specifically, the amount of happiness or pleasure it produces. Jeremy Bentham’s Act Utilitarianism uses the Hedonic Calculus to measure pleasure across seven dimensions, including intensity, duration, certainty, and extent. The principle of utility commands us to pursue the greatest happiness for the greatest number.

Quantitative hedonism – all pleasures are equal in kind. Qualitative hedonism – higher (intellectual) pleasures are superior to lower (bodily) pleasures.
Focus on individual actions (Act Utilitarianism). Defended Rule Utilitarianism: follow rules that generally promote happiness.

Common objections include the tyranny of the majority (slavery could be justified if it maximises pleasure), the demandingness objection, and the fact that utilitarianism ignores motives and rights. Despite its challenges, utilitarianism remains highly influential in public policy and bioethics.

11. Ethical Theories: Kantian Ethics and the Categorical Imperative |

Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics judges actions not by their consequences but by whether they are done from duty and conform to the moral law. The only purely good thing is a good will. An action has moral worth only if it is performed for the sake of duty, not from inclination.

The Categorical Imperative is the supreme principle of morality, expressed in three main formulations: (1) Universal Law – ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law’. (2) Humanity Formula – ‘Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and never as a means only’. (3) Kingdom of Ends – act as if you were a legislating member in a realm of rational beings who treat one another as ends.

Strengths include its respect for human dignity and its ability to generate absolute rules, such as a prohibition on lying or killing. Weaknesses concern conflicting duties (e.g. hiding an innocent person from a murderer while being asked their location) and its coldness towards emotions and consequences. However, Kant’s emphasis on rational autonomy remains foundational for human rights discourse.

12. Applied Ethics: Euthanasia and the Sanctity of Life | 应用伦理学:安乐死与生命神圣

Euthanasia (‘good death’) raises profound questions about autonomy, suffering, and the value of life. Voluntary active euthanasia involves a doctor directly ending a patient’s life at their persistent request; passive euthanasia involves withdrawing life‑sustaining treatment and is widely accepted. Physician‑assisted suicide gives the patient the means to end their own life.

The sanctity of life principle, rooted in religious ethics, holds that life is a gift from God and only God may take it away; this leads to an absolute prohibition against intentional killing. The quality of life approach, championed by utilitarians like Peter Singer, argues that when a person’s life falls below a threshold of unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement, euthanasia can be the compassionate choice and respect for autonomy outweighs mere biological existence.

Key safeguards in jurisdictions where euthanasia is legal include multiple medical opinions, waiting periods, and psychiatric evaluation to rule out treatable depression. Slippery slope concerns, however, warn that normalising voluntary euthanasia could eventually pressure the vulnerable and erode palliative care. The debate continues to evolve with changing societal attitudes.
