1. Research Methods: The Scientific Foundation |

Psychology is a science that relies on empirical data. Every investigation begins with a research aim, which is then refined into a testable hypothesis. A hypothesis must be precise and falsifiable, stating a clear prediction about the relationship between variables. The independent variable (IV) is the factor the researcher manipulates, while the dependent variable (DV) is the outcome that is measured.

Operationalisation is critical: both the IV and DV must be defined in measurable, observable terms so that the study can be replicated. Extraneous variables—such as participant mood, time of day or noise—need to be identified and controlled, otherwise they can become confounding variables that distort the true effect of the IV on the DV. Standardisation of procedures and the use of control conditions help maintain internal validity.

2. Experimental Designs and Controls |

The three main experimental designs are independent groups, repeated measures and matched pairs. In an independent groups design, different participants experience each condition. This avoids order effects but may suffer from participant variables. Random allocation to conditions helps minimise individual differences.

In a repeated measures design, the same participants take part in all conditions. This controls for participant variables perfectly but introduces order effects such as practice or fatigue. Counterbalancing (e.g., ABBA) is used to distribute order effects evenly. Matched pairs design involves pairing participants on key traits and then splitting the pairs across conditions, reducing participant variables without suffering from order effects.

Demand characteristics and investigator effects threaten validity. Participants may guess the aim and alter their behaviour, while researchers may unconsciously influence outcomes. Single-blind and double-blind procedures, together with randomisation and standardised instructions, help reduce these biases.

3. Non-experimental Methods: Observations, Self-reports and Correlations |

Not all questions can be studied with experiments for ethical or practical reasons. Observations allow researchers to record behaviour in natural or controlled settings. Structured observations use predefined behavioural categories, which improve reliability but may miss nuance. Overt observation risks demand characteristics; covert observation raises ethical issues of consent and privacy.

Self-reports, such as questionnaires and interviews, tap into participants’ thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Open-ended questions generate rich, qualitative data, while closed questions produce easily quantifiable numerical data. However, self-reports rely on respondents’ honesty and self-awareness, and are influenced by social desirability bias.

Correlational studies examine the strength and direction of a relationship between two continuous variables, yielding a correlation coefficient (e.g., –1.0 to +1.0). A positive correlation means both variables increase together; a negative correlation means one rises while the other falls. Crucially, correlation does not imply causation—a third variable may be responsible for the observed link.

4. Data Analysis and Ethical Guidelines |

Descriptive statistics summarise data: measures of central tendency (mean, median and mode) identify typical scores, while measures of dispersion (range, standard deviation) describe variability. Inferential statistics then determine whether findings are statistically significant (commonly p < 0.05), indicating that the result is unlikely to be due to chance.

Every study must adhere to ethical standards. In the Cambridge syllabus, the British Psychological Society (BPS) Code of Ethics and Conduct is central. Key principles include respect, competence, responsibility and integrity. Before a study, researchers must obtain informed consent, provide the right to withdraw, safeguard confidentiality, minimise harm and debrief participants afterwards. Deception should be avoided unless justified by significant scientific value and approved by an ethics committee.

5. Biological Approach: Brain and Neural Communication |

The biological approach explains behaviour in terms of brain structures, neurotransmitters, hormones and genetics. A core study is Maguire et al. (2000), who used MRI scans to compare London taxi drivers with non-taxi drivers. The taxi drivers, who had extensive navigational experience, had significantly larger posterior hippocampi, and the volume increase correlated with years of driving. This demonstrates brain plasticity: the brain can change structurally in response to environmental demands.

Neurons communicate through electrical impulses and chemical signals. When an action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal, neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft. These molecules bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering either excitatory or inhibitory potentials. Reuptake and enzymatic breakdown then terminate the signal. Key neurotransmitters include serotonin (mood, sleep), dopamine (reward, motivation) and acetylcholine (memory, muscle contraction).

6. Cognitive Approach: Memory Models and Reconstructive Memory |

Cognitive psychology views the mind as an information processor. The multi-store model (Atkinson and Shiffrin, 1968) proposes three stores: sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Information enters the sensory register and, if attended to, passes into STM, which has a limited capacity of about 7±2 chunks. Rehearsal keeps information in STM and transfers it to LTM, which has unlimited capacity and duration.

Baddeley and Hitch (1974) refined our understanding of STM with the working memory model. It features a central executive that directs attention and three subsystems: the phonological loop (verbal/acoustic information), the visuo-spatial sketchpad (visual/spatial data) and the episodic buffer, which integrates information and links to LTM. This model explains how we can perform two tasks simultaneously if they use different subsystems.

Memory is not a perfect recording. Loftus and Palmer (1974) showed that the wording of a question (e.g., ‘smashed’ vs ‘hit’) can distort eyewitness memory of an event. Their reconstructive memory model suggests that we store fragments of experience and fill gaps using schemas—mental frameworks shaped by past experience, leading to memory that is an active reconstruction, not a passive replay.

7. Learning Approach: Conditioning and Social Learning |

Classical conditioning, famously demonstrated by Pavlov’s dogs, involves learning through association. A neutral stimulus (e.g., a bell) is paired with an unconditioned stimulus (food) that naturally triggers an unconditioned response (salivation). After multiple pairings, the neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus that elicits a conditioned response. Watson and Rayner (1920) conditioned ‘Little Albert’ to fear a white rat, illustrating how phobias can be learned.

Operant conditioning, pioneered by Skinner, involves learning through consequences. Positive reinforcement strengthens a behaviour by adding a pleasant stimulus, while negative reinforcement strengthens behaviour by removing an unpleasant stimulus. Punishment, on the other hand, weakens a behaviour. Schedules of reinforcement (e.g., continuous vs partial) shape the rate and persistence of learning.

Bandura’s social learning theory (SLT) bridges behaviourism and cognition. In his Bobo doll studies (1961, 1963), children who observed an adult model behaving aggressively toward a doll were more likely to imitate that aggression. SLT emphasises observation, imitation and modelling, mediated by four cognitive processes: attention, retention, reproduction and motivation. Vicarious reinforcement—seeing the model rewarded or punished—further influences whether behaviour is copied.

8. Social Approach: Conformity, Obedience and Prejudice |

Social psychology investigates how individuals are influenced by others. Asch (1951) demonstrated conformity to a majority. In his line-judgement task, about 75% of participants conformed to an obviously incorrect majority opinion at least once. Factors increasing conformity include group size (up to a point), unanimity of the majority and task difficulty. Informational social influence (believing the group is right) and normative social influence (wanting to fit in) explain why people conform.

Asch(1951)展示了多数人的从众效应。

Obedience to authority was revealed by Milgram (1963). Alarmingly, 65% of participants administered what they believed were dangerous 450-volt shocks to a learner simply because an authority figure instructed them to continue. Proximity of the victim, proximity of the authority figure and the presence of disobedient peers all affected obedience levels. Milgram’s work highlights the power of the situation and raises profound ethical questions.

对权威的服从由 Milgram(1963)揭示。

Prejudice has both cognitive and motivational roots. Tajfel’s social identity theory (SIT) shows that merely categorising people into in-groups and out-groups (the minimal group paradigm) can trigger in-group favouritism and discrimination. Realistic conflict theory, exemplified by Sherif’s Robbers Cave study, proposes that competition for scarce resources breeds intergroup hostility, but cooperation toward superordinate goals can reduce prejudice.

9. Issues and Debates: Nature vs Nurture and Beyond | 议题与辩论:天性 vs 教养及更多

A perennial debate in psychology is the extent to which behaviour is determined by heredity (nature) or environment and experience (nurture). The biological approach leans toward nature, with twin and adoption studies estimating heritability. The learning approach and SLT emphasise nurture, while most modern psychologists adopt an interactionist stance—behaviour is the product of an interplay between genetic predispositions and environmental influences, as illustrated by the stress-diathesis model.

Another key debate is reductionism versus holism. Reductionism explains complex phenomena by breaking them down into simpler constituent parts—neural activity, hormones or stimulus–response links. The biological and learning approaches are reductionist. Holism argues that the whole is more than the sum of its parts, a view embraced by humanistic psychology and some social psychology. Cambridge levels of explanation (biological, psychological, social) help students recognise that different explanations can coexist without one being more ‘true’ than another.

Determinism and free will also feature strongly. Biological determinism and environmental determinism suggest that behaviour is governed by forces beyond our control. However, cognitive and humanistic approaches embrace some degree of free will, arguing that we can exercise choice. Ethical implications are central: if behaviour is fully determined, how do we handle moral responsibility in law and society?

10. Applying Psychology: Integration and Exam Focus |

In the Cambridge AS examination, you must be able to apply knowledge across approaches. For example, a question on phobias could draw on classical conditioning (learning approach), the role of the amygdala (biological approach), cognitive biases in attention (cognitive approach) and social influences on fear expression (social approach). Practising these cross-topic connections builds the synoptic thinking rewarded in high-mark questions.

Be equally confident handling research methods. You may be asked to design a study, evaluate methodology or interpret data. Always include ethical considerations, identify potential extraneous variables and justify your design choices. Use the PEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) in essay responses to stay clear and concise.
