1. Course Overview |
The Higher Physical Education course aims to develop learners’ ability to perform effectively in physical activities and to analyse factors that affect performance. The course is split into two main areas: Performance and Factors Impacting Performance. Through these, students learn to collect data, set goals, plan development programmes, monitor progress and evaluate outcomes.
By the end of the course, learners should be able to demonstrate improved performance in two activities and produce detailed written responses that show their understanding of the analysis and development process.
2. Assessment Breakdown |
The final grade for SQA Higher PE comes from two equally weighted components, each worth 60 marks and contributing 50% towards the overall grade.
SQA Higher
The assessment consists of two components:
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Performance (two activities) | 60 |
| Question paper (exam) | 60 |
The Performance unit is internally assessed by teachers and externally verified by SQA. The Question paper is externally set and marked. The written exam lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes and consists of two sections: a compulsory data analysis section and a section where candidates select one factor from a choice to answer in depth.
3. Performance Unit: Practical Activities |
For the Performance component, learners must demonstrate their ability in two different physical activities chosen from an approved SQA list. Each activity is marked out of 30, giving a total of 60 marks. The assessment focuses on three stages: preparation, performance and evaluation.
In the preparation phase, students plan how they will approach the activity, considering rules, tactics and personal strengths and weaknesses. During performance, they must execute skills and strategies under competitive or simulated conditions. In the evaluation phase, they reflect on their own performance, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
Marks are allocated according to specific criteria for each phase, so it is crucial that learners show clear evidence of preparation, sustained performance quality and thoughtful evaluation.
4. Factors Impacting Performance (FIP) |
The written examination heavily tests understanding of Factors Impacting Performance (FIP). The SQA identifies four key factors: Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical. Each factor can affect performance positively or negatively, and learners must be able to analyse how these factors interact.
Students need to know how to collect reliable data on each factor, how to interpret the data, and how to design a development plan using approaches such as goal setting, progressive practices and monitoring. This section of the syllabus is where most revision effort should be placed.
5. Mental Factor |
The mental factor covers cognitive processes such as concentration, decision-making, motivation, anxiety control and confidence. In a sport like badminton, low concentration can lead to unforced errors; in a team game, poor decision-making can disrupt tactics.
Common data collection methods for the mental factor include the use of mental toughness questionnaires, performance profiling wheels and focus charts. Learners might rate their concentration on a scale of 1–10 during specific game phases. By analysing this data, they can identify when mental lapses occur and target interventions like imagery or self-talk.
6. Emotional Factor |
The emotional factor relates to feelings such as anger, frustration, excitement, fear and happiness during performance. Uncontrolled anger can lead to fouls or loss of focus, while excessive anxiety may cause physical tension that impairs technique.
Emotional data is often collected using self-reflection diaries, emotional scales (e.g., rating anger 1–10) or video analysis where the learner notes emotional responses to events. Once trigger points are identified, strategies like deep breathing, positive self-talk or pre-performance routines can be introduced to manage emotions and improve consistency.
7. Social Factor |
The social factor focuses on interaction with others, including communication, teamwork, leadership and etiquette. In team sports like basketball, effective verbal and non-verbal communication is vital for coordinated attack and defence.
Data collection for the social factor can involve sociograms, communication tally charts or peer feedback forms. For example, a learner might record the number of times they encourage teammates during a match. Based on the findings, they might set goals to increase positive communication or take on a leadership role in drills.
8. Physical Factor |
The physical factor encompasses fitness components such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, strength, speed, flexibility, agility and power. Different activities demand different physical attributes: a gymnast needs excellent flexibility and strength, while a sprinter relies on speed and power.
Physical data collection uses standardised fitness tests, for example the Multi-Stage Fitness Test for aerobic endurance, the sit-and-reach test for flexibility, or the 30-metre sprint test for speed. Results are compared against normative data tables to assess current levels. A targeted training programme using principles of specificity and progression is then designed to develop the identified weaknesses.
9. Data Collection Methods |
Across all factors, reliable data collection is the foundation for effective analysis. Learners must understand both quantitative and qualitative methods: questionnaires, observation schedules, fitness tests, video analysis, training diaries and coach feedback. The choice of method must be justified in relation to the specific factor being investigated.
For instance, to investigate the physical factor, a fitness test like the Illinois Agility Run is a direct, objective measure. For the mental factor, a Mental Toughness Questionnaire provides subjective but meaningful insight. Learners are expected to explain why a method is appropriate, how data is recorded, and how it helps identify areas for development.
10. Goal Setting and Planning |
Once data has been analysed, learners must set specific goals using the SMART principle: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. For example, ‘Increase my cardiovascular endurance by improving my bleep test score from level 8 to level 10 within 6 weeks’ is a valid SMART target.
Planning also involves selecting appropriate approaches to develop the factor. For the physical factor this might mean designing a circuit training programme; for the mental factor it could involve a 4-week imagery script. The plan must show progression, frequency and regular monitoring points to track progress against the goals.
11. Monitoring and Evaluation |
Monitoring ensures that the development plan stays on track. Learners are taught to use tools like training diaries, re-testing of fitness parameters, and periodic reflection logs. For example, a student might record each training session’s heart rate, rating of perceived exertion and any modifications made.
At the end of the development period, formal evaluation compares pre- and post-programme data to judge improvement. Did the bleep test score increase? Has concentration during matches improved? The evaluation must critically explain reasons for success or lack of progress, linking back to the design of the plan and the application of theoretical knowledge.
12. Integrating Theory and Practice |
The SQA Higher PE course is designed so that theory and practice constantly reinforce each other. The decisions made in practical performance are shaped by an understanding of FIP, while written exam answers are strengthened by real experiences gathered during the Performance unit.
SQA Higher
Successful candidates are those who can draw clear links between their own performance data, the factors that affect them, and the development strategies they have applied. Revising by creating case studies of personal development in one activity can be an extremely effective way to prepare for both the practical assessment and the final examination.
