1. Pitch and Melody |

Melody is a succession of pitches perceived as a coherent line. It may move by step (conjunct) or by leap (disjunct), and its overall span from lowest to highest note is called the range. A narrow range stays within a perfect 5th, whereas a wide range can extend well over an octave.

The pitch content of a melody derives from scales or modes. Major, minor (natural, harmonic, melodic), chromatic, pentatonic, whole-tone and modal scales (Dorian, Phrygian, etc.) each create distinct colours. Intervals such as the tritone (augmented 4th/diminished 5th) add tension, while perfect 4ths and 5ths sound hollow or stable depending on context.

Common melodic devices include sequence, imitation, and ostinato. A sequence restates a pattern at a different pitch, imitation repeats a motif in another voice or part, and an ostinato is a persistently repeated melodic or rhythmic figure.

2. Rhythm and Metre |

Metre organises beats into regular groups, indicated by time signatures. Simple metres divide the beat into two equal parts (e.g. 2/4, 3/4, 4/4); compound metres divide into three (e.g. 6/8, 9/8, 12/8). Irregular metres such as 5/4, 7/8 or changing time signatures create asymmetrical, unpredictable phrasing.

Rhythmic features bring character to music. Syncopation places accents on weak beats or between beats, creating off-beat tension. Dotted rhythms (dotted quaver–semiquaver) produce a crisp, skipping feel. Triplets divide a beat into three equal notes, and cross-rhythms or polyrhythms superimpose contrasting patterns simultaneously.

3. Tempo and Dynamics |

Tempo indicates the speed of the music, typically given by Italian terms. Common markings include Largo (very slow), Adagio (slow), Andante (walking pace), Moderato, Allegro (fast), and Presto (very fast). Gradual changes such as accelerando (getting faster) and ritardando/ralentando (slowing down) must be identified, as well as rubato, where the tempo is flexibly stretched for expression.

常见标记有 Largo(极慢)、Adagio(慢)、Andante(行板)、Moderato、Allegro(快)和 Presto(极快)。

Dynamics refer to the volume of sound. The main dynamic levels are pianissimo (pp), piano (p), mezzo-piano (mp), mezzo-forte (mf), forte (f) and fortissimo (ff). Gradual changes include crescendo (growing louder) and diminuendo/decrescendo (growing softer). Sudden accents such as sforzando (sfz) and terraced dynamics (abrupt shifts without transition) are typical of Baroque music.

逐渐变化包括渐强(crescendo)和渐弱(diminuendo/decrescendo)。

4. Articulation and Phrasing |

Articulation describes how individual notes are attacked and connected. Legato (smooth, connected) contrasts with staccato (short, detached). Other markings include tenuto (held for full value, often slightly stressed), accent (> or sfz) and marcato (marked, heavily accented). In string music, pizzicato (plucked) and arco (bowed) are essential articulations.

其它标记有 tenuto(保持充分时值,常带轻微强调)、重音(> 或 sfz)以及 marcato(有力重音)。

Phrasing shapes musical sentences, often marked by slurs, breaths or cadences. A phrase typically corresponds to a natural musical unit, much like a spoken sentence, and performers use slight dynamic shading and timing to delineate it.

5. Harmony and Tonality |

Harmony arises from combining pitches simultaneously. Chords are built in thirds; the primary triads are tonic (I), subdominant (IV) and dominant (V). Chord quality can be major, minor, diminished or augmented. Seventh chords (especially dominant 7th) add further colour. Dissonance creates tension that typically resolves to consonance.

Cadences function as harmonic punctuation. A perfect cadence (V–I) sounds final; an imperfect cadence (I–V, ii–V, IV–V) feels incomplete; a plagal cadence (IV–I) gives an ‘Amen’ effect; an interrupted cadence (V–vi) defers the expected resolution.

完全终止(V–I)听感完满;不完全终止(I–V、ii–V、IV–V)留下悬念;变格终止(IV–I)产生“阿门”效果;阻碍终止(V–vi)延缓期待中的解决。

Tonality is the overall key centre. Music may be diatonic (adhering to the key) or chromatic (using notes outside the key). Modulations shift the tonal centre temporarily or permanently. Some 20th-century works avoid a clear key centre, using atonal, serial or modal approaches.

6. Texture | 织体

Texture describes how many layers of sound are heard and how they relate. Monophonic texture consists of a single unaccompanied melodic line. Homophonic texture features one main melody supported by chordal accompaniment (melody-dominated homophony). Polyphonic (contrapuntal) texture comprises two or more independent melodies interweaving.

Other textures include heterophony, where simultaneous variations of a single melody occur (common in some world music traditions), and antiphony, where groups of voices or instruments alternate. Texture can thicken or thin through doubling, adding or removing parts.

7. Instrumentation and Timbre |

Recognising instruments and voices by family and tone colour is vital. Orchestral families include strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon), brass (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba) and percussion (timpani, cymbals, xylophone). Voice types are soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

Timbre, or tone colour, can be described using adjectives such as bright, dark, warm, reedy, nasal, breathy or percussive. Extended techniques modify the basic sound: con sordino (muted), tremolo (rapid repetition), flutter-tonguing (wind), sul ponticello (bowing near the bridge) and harmonics.

8. Structure and Form |

Musical structure organises sections into a coherent whole. Binary form (AB) and ternary form (ABA) are fundamental. Rondo form (ABACA) features a recurring refrain. Theme and variations presents a melody followed by altered versions. Sonata form, widely used in the Classical period, contains exposition, development and recapitulation.

Vocal forms include strophic (same music for each verse), through-composed (new music throughout) and da capo aria (ABA with ornamented repeat). Other elements such as introduction, bridge, chorus, coda and codetta help delineate sections. Cyclic forms and programmatic structures appear in Romantic music.

9. Style and Period |

Baroque (c.1600–1750) music features continuous bass lines (basso continuo), terraced dynamics, contrapuntal textures and extensive ornamentation. Major composers include Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. The orchestra was smaller, centred on strings, harpsichord and occasional woodwinds or brass.

Classical (c.1750–1820) music emphasises clarity, balanced phrases, homophonic textures and Alberti bass. The piano replaced the harpsichord. Forms like sonata form, symphony and string quartet became standard. Haydn, Mozart and early Beethoven exemplify this style.

Romantic (c.1820–1900) music expands expressive range with chromatic harmony, wide dynamics, large orchestras and rich timbres. Programme music, nationalistic elements and lyrical melodies are common. Key composers include Schubert, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Brahms.

20th-century idioms include Impressionism (Debussy, Ravel), Serialism (Schoenberg), Minimalism (Reich, Glass), Neo-classicism and jazz influences. Atonality, electronica and experimental techniques expanded the boundaries of pitch, rhythm and form.

10. Non-Western Music Traditions |

African music often uses polyrhythm, where multiple contrasting rhythms are layered. Call-and-response structures, pentatonic melodies and improvisation are common. Instruments include djembe, balafon, mbira and talking drum.
