📚 AS OCR Computer Science: Summer Preview and Bridging Course | AS OCR

Getting ready for AS OCR Computer Science can feel like a big jump from GCSE, but with the right summer preparation you can build confidence and hit the ground running. This bridging guide walks you through the key topics, skills, and strategies you need to master before starting the course.

1. Welcome and Overview |

The OCR AS Level Computer Science qualification (H046) is designed to develop your understanding of core computational concepts, problem-solving skills, and the impact of technology on society. This course is ideal for students who enjoy logical thinking and wish to pursue further studies or careers in computing, engineering, or related fields.

OCR’s AS specification covers two examined components: Component 01 (Computing Principles) and Component 02 (Algorithms and Problem Solving). You will learn about data representation, computer systems, networking, databases, ethical issues, and algorithm design. No prior programming experience is required, but you are expected to learn a high-level language during the course (Python is common).

2. Course Structure and Assessment |

It is crucial to understand the assessment format early. Both components are externally examined at the end of the course, each contributing 50% to the AS grade. Component 01 tests theoretical knowledge through a mix of short and long answer questions, while Component 02 focuses on algorithm writing, pseudocode, and problem-solving.
