When designing a study, explain exactly how you would uphold these principles, for example by providing a consent form, ensuring a quiet and safe environment, and using participant numbers instead of names.

The mean is sensitive to extreme scores, while the median is not. Measures of dispersion include the range (highest minus lowest) and possibly the simple interpretation of standard deviation as a measure of average spread. In Paper 4, calculations are straightforward; showing your working is advisable.

Link the conclusion back to the aim and suggest what future research might do next, but do not introduce brand new information.

Common weaknesses include: small sample size (reduces generalisability), lack of control over extraneous variables (e.g., noise, prior knowledge), demand characteristics (participants guess the purpose and change behaviour), low ecological validity (the task is not like real-life memory use), and order effects in repeated measures. For each weakness, suggest a specific improvement. For instance, to raise ecological validity, use a more realistic task such as remembering a shopping list. Use psychological terminology: internal validity, reliability, standardisation, operationalisation. Always link your evaluation point back to how the study’s design affects the trustworthiness of the conclusions.

When designing a study, give enough procedural detail to show that it can be replicated. Read questions carefully: if asked to ‘describe how you would control one extraneous variable’, mention exactly what you would keep constant and how. Use the mark scheme approach – allocate a sentence to each mark you need. Practise drawing tables and graphs under timed conditions. Finally, be concise but precise; examiners prefer a well-structured, accurate answer to a long and rambling one.
