1. Material Properties |

Strength: The ability of a material to withstand an applied force without breaking or deforming. Think of a steel lifting cable — it must have high tensile strength.

Hardness: Resistance to indentation, scratching or wear. Diamond is one of the hardest natural materials. Hardness is often tested with Brinell or Rockwell methods.

Toughness: The capacity to absorb energy and deform plastically before fracturing. Tough materials, like mild steel, can withstand sudden impacts without shattering.

Plasticity: Permanent deformation that remains after the load is removed. Clay exhibits plasticity — you can mould it into a shape and it stays.

Ductility: The ability to be stretched into a thin wire without breaking. Copper is highly ductile, making it ideal for electrical wiring.

Malleability: The ability to be hammered or rolled into thin sheets. Gold is extremely malleable; one gram can be beaten into a sheet of about one square metre.

Memory trick – Ductile vs Malleable: Ductile → drawn into wire (both start with D); Malleable → hammered into sheet (think of a mallet hammer).

记忆技巧——延展性与可锻性:Ductile(延展的)→ drawn into wire(拉成丝),都以 D 开头;Malleable(可锻的)→ mallet(木槌),可联想用锤子敲成薄片。
