A-Level AQA Psychology: Essay Writing Framework & Model Answer | A-Level AQA

📚 A-Level AQA Psychology: Essay Writing Framework & Model Answer | A-Level AQA

Mastering essay writing is the single most important skill for success in AQA A-Level Psychology. Unlike short-answer questions, the extended 16-mark essays require you to demonstrate knowledge (AO1), application (AO2), and critical evaluation (AO3) in a sustained, coherent argument. This guide breaks down a proven framework you can apply to any topic from memory to psychopathology, and provides a full model essay so you can see how theory translates into high-band answers.

1. Understanding the AQA Mark Scheme | 理解 AQA 评分方案

Every 16-mark essay is split into 6 marks for AO1 (knowledge and understanding) and 10 marks for AO3 (evaluation, analysis, and interpretation). AO2 (application) is sometimes embedded within AO3 when you need to apply concepts to a novel scenario, but for most standard essays, the weight is clearly on critical thinking. Top candidates do not simply list strengths and weaknesses; they build a balanced discussion that considers supporting evidence, contradictory research, methodological issues, and real-world implications.

每一道 16 分的论文题都被分为 6 分的 AO1(知识与理解)和 10 分的 AO3(评价、分析与解读)。

2. The Essential Structure of an A-Level Psychology Essay | A-Level

A clear structure signals to the examiner that you are in control of the material. The recommended framework is: a concise introduction (2-3 sentences), four to five well-developed body paragraphs following the PEEL or PEEEL model, and a brief conclusion that resolves the debate. Avoid lengthy introductions or conclusions that merely repeat the question; every sentence must earn marks.

3. Crafting a Strong Introduction |

An introduction in AQA Psychology should define the key term and briefly outline the direction of the essay. For example, if the question asks you to discuss the biological approach to treating OCD, you might start by defining the biological approach and naming the two key treatments (drug therapy and deep brain stimulation). Then you can signal that you will evaluate their effectiveness, ethical implications, and the underlying assumption of biological determinism.

4. Body Paragraphs: The PEEL Method | 主体段落:PEEL 方法

The PEEL structure – Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link – keeps each paragraph focused. Begin with a clear point (e.g., a strength). Follow with specific evidence (a named study with date and findings). Then explain why this evidence supports or challenges the theory, unpacking the mechanism. Finally, link back to the question, explicitly answering ‘so what?’ For evaluation paragraphs, you can extend to PEEEL by adding an extra Evaluation layer, such as a counter-argument or methodological limitation.

PEEL 结构——Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(回扣)——让每个段落都紧扣主题。

AO1 is not about memorising everything; it is about selecting accurate, detailed knowledge. Always include the name of the researcher and the year, describe the method and key findings concisely, and link the study directly to the theory. For instance, ‘Bandura (1961) conducted a controlled observation where children who observed an aggressive model were significantly more likely to imitate physical and verbal aggression towards a Bobo doll, supporting the idea that aggression can be learned through observation.’ Avoid vague statements like ‘a study showed’.

Effective evaluation goes beyond generic ‘this study lacks ecological validity’. Use the ‘GRAVE’ or ‘IDER’ prompts to generate specific criticisms. GRAVE stands for Generalisability, Reliability, Application, Validity (internal/external), and Ethics. IDER stands for Issues and Debates (nature/nurture, reductionism, determinism), supporting/refuting Evidence, Real-world application, and comparison. Always explain why a limitation matters: does it undermine the whole theory, or simply suggest caution in interpreting results?

7. Handling Issues and Debates |

AQA examiners look for the ability to weave issues and debates naturally into evaluation. When discussing the cognitive approach, you can highlight its soft determinism and contrast it with the biological approach’s hard determinism. When evaluating psychodynamic explanations, address gender bias (alpha bias) in Freud’s theories. Using phrases like ‘this explanation can be seen as environmentally reductionist because…’ or ‘a strength is that it takes a more interactionist stance by acknowledging both nature and nurture…’ demonstrates sophisticated AO3 thinking.

8. Comparison and Discussion Phrases |

To achieve top-band marks for coherence, use discourse markers that compare and contrast theories explicitly. Useful phrases include: ‘In contrast, the biological approach would argue that…’, ‘However, social learning theory overcomes this limitation by…’, ‘This is supported by…’, ‘Nevertheless, a more parsimonious explanation is provided by…’, and ‘From a practical standpoint, this has led to…’. These create a flowing argument rather than a disjointed list of points.

9. Writing an Effective Conclusion |

Your conclusion should briefly summarise the key debate and come to a reasoned judgement. Avoid simply repeating your introduction. Instead, weigh up the evidence: ‘Overall, while the biological approach provides strong empirical support and practical treatments, its deterministic and reductionist stance limits its ability to account for the complexity of [the behaviour]. A more holistic explanation may require integrating cognitive and social factors.’ This type of evaluative conclusion directly addresses the ‘discuss’ command word and secures top AO3 marks.

10. Common Pitfalls to Avoid |

Many students lose marks by describing too much and evaluating too little. Others write evaluations that are not explicitly linked back to the question. Never include unsupported assertions like ‘this is a great strength’ without saying why. Avoid juxtaposing contradictory evidence without explanation; if you mention a refuting study, you must say what that means for the theory. Finally, manage your time: aim to spend no more than 20-22 minutes on a 16-mark essay, leaving room to plan and proofread.

11. Model Essay: Outline and Evaluate the Social Learning Theory of Aggression (Part 1) |

Social learning theory (SLT), proposed by Bandura, argues that aggression is learned indirectly through observation and vicarious reinforcement. Unlike biological explanations, SLT emphasises cognitive mediational processes between stimulus and response: attention, retention, motor reproduction, and motivation. A person must pay attention to an aggressive model, remember the behaviour, be capable of reproducing it, and have the expectation of a reward. Identification with the model – based on perceived similarity or status – increases the likelihood of imitation.

Bandura’s (1961) classic Bobo doll experiment provided foundational support. In this controlled lab study, 36 boys and 36 girls aged 3 to 6 years observed an adult model behaving aggressively towards an inflatable doll. Children in the aggressive condition were significantly more likely to exhibit both imitative and non-imitative aggression compared to a control group. Importantly, children who saw the model rewarded (vicarious reinforcement) showed the highest levels of aggression, directly supporting the role of motivation in the learning process.

12. Model Essay Continued (Part 2) |

One key strength of SLT is its real-world application to understanding media influences on aggression. The theory explains why longitudinal studies find correlations between exposure to violent media in childhood and later aggressive behaviour; children may identify with glamorised violent role models and retain aggressive scripts. This has informed policies on age ratings and parental controls. Furthermore, SLT is less deterministic than biological theories because it acknowledges the role of cognitive choice – an individual can observe aggression without reproducing it if their motivation or sense of self-efficacy is low.

However, SLT has been criticised for over-reliance on laboratory studies that lack ecological validity. The Bobo doll is designed to be hit; striking an inanimate object is not the same as real interpersonal violence. The children’s behaviour may have been demand characteristics, responding to cues from the adult experimenter. Yet, later research by Bandura (1963) using a live clown and a video clip showed similar patterns, partly addressing this concern. A deeper limitation is that SLT underestimates biological factors. Twin and adoption studies show a significant heritable component to aggression, and neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine play well-established roles. SLT therefore offers only a partial account, best viewed within a biosocial framework.

In conclusion, social learning theory has significantly advanced our understanding of the situational and cognitive underpinnings of aggression. Its practical applications and less deterministic stance are clear strengths. Yet the reductionist neglect of biological predispositions and the artificiality of its early evidence mean it cannot stand alone as a complete explanation. An integrated approach, blending social learning with genetic and neurobiological insights, is most consistent with current psychological evidence.
